Took me long enough.

IE5 users may have some trouble. Tell me if there's anything horribly wrong with it. Minor suggestions may be implemented, major ones probably won't =)

It crashed my browser on page load. I'm using IE5.1 for Mac.

That's a nuisance. Crashed? Any hope of getting a javascript error out of there?

It uses some newer DOM methods on page load, but it's supposed to test first to see if the browser supports them.

I wonder if I can find a mac on campus somewhere...

For a few seconds there I was, "where the heck is the dhtml stuff!?!?". But then I realized I could rearrange things and then it all made sense. That's some very nice movement

IE6 for PC here, no probs. And I must say, you've got some pretty sweet stuff up there. I love some of your 3D images, and I also enjoyed the slime cam.

BTW: Mac users, go to http://www.slimeland.com/images/ and see if your browser crashes. It's basically the same thing without any Javascript. That will at least begin to narrow it down, plus you can see what the page looks like (minus the fancy stuff).

Really nice Slime. The re-arranger thingy works flawlessly in IE5/Win2K.
You said IE5 may have trouble..is there something else there I`m missing?

Well, the only problems I had noticed were related to changing your text size (via view menu or crtl+mouse wheel) before playing around with it. But I couldn't find a workaround.

No error messages upon crash for me but I could view the slimeland.com/images page no problem....MAC IE5.1

OK. I'm going to make a slight change to the javascript (i think there's a bug anyway)... give me a few minutes...

It will forward you through a sequence of pages (actually all the same page), starting with number zero. Please tell me which one it crashes on first. (Each one adds a little more javascript code on the onload function.)

Then we can narrow it down further after that =)

I'm *really* hoping it doesn't happen on number 3.

Yeah, I don't know what happened. That internal server error just popped up now. The site isn't down, it must he a PHP error of some sort, but I don't know why it would happen now.

Nor do I know how to get at the error message...

[edit: removing all PHP from the page didn't work. I didn't change anything, I don't know what could have happened. I'll look into it. For now there's a static HTML file there.]

[edit2: ugh. perl isn't working either. the hosting people probably screwed something up. I'll leave it for the morning (it's midnight now). Hopefully it will work then. In the meantime, everything should be the same except that cookies will have no effect (settings won't be saved). sigh.]

This worked OK, forwarding you to the land of instant crash. IE 5.2, OS 10.2, G4, lotsa RAM.

NOW...to the review...and I find myself lacking for words.

What does that tell you, buddy? That's right, there's not much there for me to review. You know I enjoy simple sites. Hell, simple is generally vastly superior to complicated designs. However, in this case, I want to see more. You're POV-Ray GOD over there, and you're showing us only one image of any repute, and three little icons per update? Oh, how the tides have turned. I remember that apocryphal front page you once had, with the layers flying all over the place, making my browser eat it's own feet... Those were the good old days.

Don't misunderstand me, the design is solid. Perhaps pulling the slime image over into other places. Like, say, rather than just in the top-left corner, make a watermarked one down in the bottom right to give the page flow. At 1600x1200, it's predominantly empty. This will, of course, change as you get more content to put in there, but you understand my concern.

I really don't like the green you've chosen for the header background. It's fine, because it falls into the cyan/blue/water scheme you've built, but it's a little too institutional for my tastes. Perhaps you could pick something that has a little more power behind it? Perhaps something with a background that would fill you with joy? Just something to make the headers pop a little more than a simple bold black on light-green.

I'm having issues with the link colors on the left. Perhaps it's my eyes, but they seem a little too light to be read on the white background. Drop it down 30% or so towards black. That might make everything happier.

Other than that, it's nice to see you have something somewhere. It's about fuckin' time, yo.

Cyoung and Boudga: it crashed on #1? Interesting. I think that's where it deletes empty text nodes. I'll look more closely at that code...

twItch^, thanks for the review =) first of all, do you know your monitor gamma offhand? I made the links (and the headers) brighter than they should have been to make up for the fact that most monitors have a gamma of 1.8 or 2.2 if I remember correctly. I was worried that they'd blend in with the rest of the text too well otherwise.

I sort of agree that it's lacking in eye candy. I thought maybe later I'd add a background image to each section, in the upper right, just below the buttons.

Any suggestions for the header bars? I'm unsure what color would be better or what would make them nicer.

InI: You say "each and every topic is different, some black, some stary, some blue, some cyan." What do you mean by each 'topic'? Are you referring to the 'past front pages' links? If so, that's meant to be the case, though I'm hoping to clear up the inconsistency with this design. Think of it like, here's what it looks like now, these are what it looked like some time in the past.

Grumble: I realised that dates would be a good idea, but as of yet I'm unsure how to integrate them. (DIVs aren't allowed inside H1 elements, so you can't easily float something to the right in them... we'll see what I can do though.) In the meantime, I think I'll stick the date in the XML so that when I *do* get it working, I can just recompile everything.

Mac users: what do you mean by crash? do you mean freeze? Or does it immediately die? 'Cause it could be some sort of weird infinite loop problem if it's freezing.

Ah. Well, I agree that content is lacking; I'm hoping to change this as time goes on. And I guess I understand what you mean that all the things linked to on the left look different; they don't really fit together. All the 'past front pages' do follow a cyan scheme, but in different ways which make them look separate. And they *are* separate. I like the idea of a solid, consistent theme, so that's what I'm aiming for now. Old DHTML experiments won't be converted, but newer things should fit in better, using the same style.

BTW: the logo throughout all my site (at least the old front pages) is the slime *shape*. =)

I dunno. I may just have to test for IE 5/mac specifically and exit the script. At least until I can get my hands on a mac to test for myself.
