I do recall a script like this, but it only works in IE.

Have you tried a >Google search<?

You should be able to find anything you need in there

And by the way, I'd recommend against using a sound effect on every link. There's nothing more annoying than sound on a webpage, and I don't care how nifty it sounds...

To my knowledge, no web browser can play sound.

If you want to put sound in an HTML page you need to use a plugin be it Flash, Winamp, RealPlayer, Beatnik (sp?) or QuickTime etc etc...

But ozphactor gives good advice, if you must use sound, use it wisely.

Unfortunately, IE for Windows can play sound through the <body bgsound=""> attribute. I can't count how many times I've seen this attribute abused. The worst part is you can't stop it using the browser "stop" button.

I have found a solution that works, though. It's the little "x" in the top-right corner of the window

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

I've even used it before *ducks onslaught of rottern fruit and veg* =)

But that was a special circumstance for an experimental audio site and that object was more scriptable than almost every audio plugin (you can script the volume and the ballence) except for flash, but that doesn't really count as flash has a scripting engine itself but I wasn't allowd to use flash for that site -- silly assignment restrictions.
