I didn't bother rendering a large version. I figure eventually rendering large versions may take hours, and so people won't bother to do so, so why bother now? =) in the end, someone will have to render a large version of the final product.

One hour and twelve minutes to render. That's what happens when you combine area lights and scattering media. =) I took the liberty of rendering a larger version this time, mainly for the benefit of Grumble's little page there, but beware grumble, render times are going to soar =) bwahahahaha
source
Hope I didn't do too much at once... =) Grumble, make sure you check the top of the source before doing anything, I put a few variables there to make test renders much faster. Also note the changes I made to your holes-in-the-dice code; I made it easier to manipulate; you might learn something from the way I altered it.

ohhhh. very creepy!
youre right. rendertimes will raise potentially the further the game goes.
but i'll post up the 320-version here first, then i'll leave the computer alone for an hour or so to make the 800 one. (im workin on a 800mhz labtop at the moment)
unfortunately i dont have much time today, so my next move could take some time.

That's fair. I just found out that I have three days to make a two minute POV-Ray animation (the completion of a three minute total animation), so I'll be doing the fastest coding of my life in the next few days. You can expect I'll be slow to respond once you get around to it. =)
I'm using a 900mhz btw.

This is great! Its about time the 3d forum got some action! Looks beutiful too guys.
reitveld, 3d Studio pong does sound tempting, but you have to consider that with each model in the scene, there would be many high-quality high-res texture images needed. Lets assume about 5 per model. And about 15 models in a scene.. it would be one huge file after another we'd need to post online. And after that, we'd need to find a way to make sure all the texture files are in the proper folder on both peoples computers.
But if you're up for it...

Your response is tentatively the last in the game. I wouldn't mind another shot, though, if you want. Of course, there are a few others who want to play now too =)

no prob with the delay, i was busy nevertheless.
the dice still rock the whole scene! their reflection is just to beautiful.
im gonna look at the source then i decide if i give it another shot or not. (that water-idea is still makin me interested. hehe)
if you wanna, you can go ahead and play with others, yeah! love to see other matches!
people, who is up for a match?

Well, you *have* to respond at least *one* more time to finish the match =)
btw, I took a quick look at your water texture. I've never really been successful with the ripples texture, but I believe that the only really interesting part of it is in the range <0,0,0> to <1,1,1>, so you should scale it pretty large and translate it so the interesting part is the part that the camera sees. Also look up number_of_waves or something like that in the docs.
You might also just try the bozo pattern for the normal.
Remember that the way to make water the most realistic is to make it almost completely transparent, and then give it reflection, refraction, and then, perhaps, scattering media on the inside (since water scatters light).
I was thinking, for one direction this image could be taken in, to turn the huge masses of pieces into different colors, one color on the left, another color on the right, and sort of interspersed in the middle, to strengthen the board-game idea.

Yeah, I think the problem with this match is that after the first four or so pongs, we had cluttered up the scene with different objects. Maybe we should move more slowly next time. It was fun, anyway.
After a break, I'll be willing to try a match with someone else.
