Anyone know a good way of determining what the size of an object's textures (the actual image maps) should be?

By the way, not that it matters, but I'm using 3Dsmax...

Largely a matter of preference.

If an object is going to have close views, then up the res. If it's only going to be at a distance, then use smaller maps. Obviously, the larger the map, the more detail. The smaller the map, the more pixelated it becomes as you get closer.

Indeed...littlem ore you can add to that...high res textures take longer to render.,..but can be worth it if they are done well

[edit]and there's no point in high-resd texturing a low poly model[/edit]

I kind of go with the same size of the object in perportion. So... the flat side of a box may be 2x1 so I would make a map that is 600x300 or such. I may be waaaaaayyyyyy wrong, but it works for me.

actually reitveld you';re waaaaaaaay right. A map should always be made to the sme proportions of the model it';s being put ionto...that way you don't get any stretching, squashing or other distortions...

what I'm doing is making the canvas the size of the face (foot per pixel) and making it 1500% bigger, but I didn't know if there was a better way...
