This morning I was driving to work and for some reason began to question the difference between programming languages and their scripting siblings- such as Java and Javascript, VB and VB Script. Basically, what was the original reason for creating scripting languages? I did a search in google and came up with this link

Pretty cool.

Just a note: Java and Javascript have no relation.

Javascript and Java have syntaxes that look the same. Otherwise they have virtually no similarities.

actually javascript wasn't even orginally called "java"script, it was orginally called Mocha (get it??) and then Livescript and finally javascript mostly to capitalize on the new popularity of java.

Much of it's similarity to Java come from it's syntax, which isn't suprising since they were both developed by Sun (JS in partnership with Netscape) however Javascript was always written to extend scripting functionality to web pages and browsers as opposed to Java which was developed as a multi-platform compiled (well half compiled ) programming language.
