Topic awaiting preservation: How do you test out a website? (Page 1 of 1)

I have a JSP website and I want to test things like server load and what happens if I get hit with a DOS attack, so how do I go about doing this?
(Or do you just throw it out on the web, cross your fingers, close your eyes and wait for the worst?)
