My server, which I wish to make a backup of, does not contain a tape drive.

My workstation, contains a tape drive,

Both the workstation and the server run Linux.

Both the workstation and the server are connected by a local area network.

Is it possible to share the workstation's tape drive so that it will make a backup of the servers hard drive?

Hokay that makes sense.

hmm best answer I can give right now is yes. Lemme go check Ye Old Linux Bible...

...Alright have you configured these to use NFS (Network File System)? This is something you should look into if not. (It's a long chapter in my book) but here's a tutorial this is the easiest way (well easiest once you have NFS set up ). Otherwise quick and dirty you should be able to just tarball the files on the one machine and then ftp them to the second and save that to the tape drive.

Thanks! I never thought of just taring them up!
Sounds like a good idea. So all I have to do is tar the whole file system.

And as for the tape utiltity I guess that would be Amanda.
