I'd have to go with DG's.

I like #1 by Softhead but there's just something missing that I can't put my finger on.

I personally dislike DG's. It's just not to my taste. but we'll implement whatever you want. (not that softheads is perfect. but at least the basic design is right. also we'll have to swap some things around (for example, this is the players lounge. Why do I not see my current matches?)

Dark Garden's Design.

I would have to agree it is missing something, that something is the layout of the sub pages. I like the main page layout and color scheme, but I believe something needs to be shown of the sub pages, and player match pages.

I vote for DarkGarden's design...

Just a note... every page on this site is going to be a heavy download for modem users, just because the content of it is large, high quality images. No matter what design we use, we really need to optimize the download time for it. Like, a *lot*. Let's just keep that in mind. Of course, any of these designs can probably be simplified. But CSS is our friend here, we need a pleasant-looking site that's fast to download.

In fact, as I see it, if we use DG's design, the only graphics we should have are the big one at the top, the little folded page corner that appears in the upper left of every section of the page, and maybe one or two other small gif images. CSS should be able to handle the rest.

I was kind of hoping we could take elements from the various designs. I prefer SoftHead's top sets of designs or DarkShadow's (although I believe they are pretty similar) - I think its the cleaner, clearer, uncluttered look that appeals (although I also like SH's bottom bar from the middle designs). Although DG's design is great (as were all the contributions, of course!!) there is a little too much going on but I'm easily confused!!

Slime: I agree. The HTML skeleton I've slung together (sorry TP I'll upload a better version tomorrow - I've been busy today) uses CSS but also IFRAMEs (I'm hoping that lallous' ideas will permit a NS4.x version too) as doing things like reloading all the graphics from a match just to see the latest comments would be a huge waste of bandwidth (I'm sure there will be more DHTML related questions winging your way once the basics are up and running and the winning design needs implementing!!). I also think that people should be allowed the option of low or high bandwidth (i.e. they get all the pictures full size or just the latest one with the others as thumbs). All this will have to be addressed in other threads though (start one if there are things that need discussing).

My vote: #1 - DarkGarden.


While I do like many of Softhead's (particularly the 3rd set down), I think they lack some important things that DG's design has:

1) Organization. There is a flo to the information in DG's that is very pleasing.

2) Visual stimuli. Sh's seem (to my eye) to be a bit too...even toned.

3) Heirarchial structure. There seems to be more emphasis on the bottom of the page on SH's layouts, and not much at all at he top.

Softhead's blue. I think it's easy to code without many graphics which in turn will save us lots of hard drive space AND load up times. It's very pleasing to the eyes yet it doesn't detract from the content and the thumbnails. It could be laid out a little better but that will all be solved when we know what content we will have.

one key issue that i think all the designs may have overlooked is the fact that the pictures look so damn good, here in the asylum, on a dark background.
hmm... maybe we should make a nice blank design, and let DG and softhead have a PSPong match with it, and use whatever comes out.
