maybe expand the border a bit to the top.

There's a thin whitish line around the edge that needs to be removed. I'd also like to see a bit of a shadow on the ground below it, perhaps.

You seem to have found those issues that I don't know how to address yet. The thin white-ish line. It's not in the PSD file but it's in the GIF output file from IMAGE READY. I'm using a color background and it seems to be outlining the whole image.

SLIME: the "...shadow on the ground..." would be for a more 3-D effect? It seems to me that there's plenty of perspective on the top of the oval but not enough on the bottom, hence the reflection. Maybe I'll elliminate the reflection and.. who knows. A work in progress. I'm happy to get get any advice.

Set your matte color to the average forum background color, and remove the colored background. Then turn on transparency when you save.

I suggest a shadow on the ground because when you put a rounded object on a flat surface, it restricts the amount of light that can get to the surface around it, making it darker. Even if there's no sharp shadow of the object on the ground, there's a darkness around its base.

Hmm...I really liked the reflection

Yet another modification. I think I lilke the combination of a slight drop shadow with the reflection.

I don't know if anyone caught (very subtle) the animation in the first post. After looking at it I can't even make it out anymore but if anyone can make a guess... more power to you!

That`s better, just need to work on taht transparency thing and you`re good to go.

Looking good. I like the reflection. The shadow should be lighter in the center and darker at the edges due to light refraction. It should also be slightly further back . The light is coming from the upper front but your shadow is from a light directly overhead.

When you fix the transparency you'll have a keeper. Check out the tutorials and FAQs.

I see something flashing in the top one but it's real faint and doesn't last long. Sorry can't make i out. Was it supposed to be your name?

Moth: It was my face. LOL It sorta looked good at the original size but defientely did not come across on the final version. I'll take the lighting advice to heart. No formal training, so any little piece that I pick up is worth it's weight in tuition money (and no, I'm not giving that money away). I'm still kicking myself with gett a good transparency without comprimising quality of the pic itself. I'll get it eventually though.

It's usually best to avoid dithering the transparency. Now, there are some cases where you *do* want to dither, because otherwise the transition from the matte color to the background color is too sharp. However, in those cases, you want all the dithering to appear *on the matte color* rather than on any of the colors of the image itself. That produces the smoothest result.

Slime... I think I understand what you are saying. The concept of dithering is not new to me. But applying it to graphics is. I'm finding quite a few tutorials and creating good transparency and dithering habits. In this case, however, I wanted to have a very clean reflection. So only the reflection area is sitting on an average color background while the rest is transparent. A slight bit of dithering to keep the shadows smooth. Works well on these dark colors but looks like crap on anything light.

Definitely. Well made transparent gifs will only work on certain background shades. One has to make them for an intended background.

The second one looks better. The only problem with it is the shadow: the shadow is a dark grey. This makes the appearance that the ground underneath the object isn't dark red, but some shade of grey. What you should do is make the shadow perfectly black, and if you want it to not be completely black, then give it some transparency so that it's an average of black and the average forum background color. Making it anything less than black implies that there's some white mixed in there, but there's nowhere for white to come from.

Big Cloud: You are doing good, keep up the good work. You are slowly getting the hang of this. I know doing something like this is tough, but you are doing better than I did. It took me nearly two weeks to get a sufficeable sig up. Keep working at it though. you are getting better.

Hi Wolfen. Thanks for the welcome. It's kinda like a home away from home.

I'm not noticing this on my monitor at home but I'm away this weekend looking at the sig and it looks like crap! The colors look horribly truncated. Almost as if I took the color pallette down to 16 colors. I'm viewing it on an LCD display set to 32 bit. But it's an AOL browser. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I'll take another look at it when I get home. Have a great weekend everybody.

By default, AOL's built in browser screws up images.
