Topic: Forum changes, news and updates (Page 1 of 1)

OK; I've trimmed us back down to just 15 forum areas, in three sections. The "Distributed" forum missed the cut, alas, though the moderators of that forum retain their "Psychotic" status, these things are hard to recover from, heh. The "PS Pong" forum has been moved up to Maximum Security where something as dangerous as that probably belongs!

Ideally, this is the most number of forums we'll ever have, if things get to the point where we just *need* to have another 5 or 10, then I'll look into splitting the Asylum up into different "campuses", each with it's own "front door" yet sharing the same member list. I'd rather avoid this situation for as long as possible, I'm sure it would involve fragmenting our community even further, which would be not a good thing.

What would be nice is if we could each choose some settings and display only those forums we'd like to be seeing, this way we could all live in the same place while still having a manageable interface situation to deal with, hmm. The coding involved on this (and all the other hacks necessary) add up to something major, but sometime this coming year I know I'll have to be doing something (possibly necessitating moving to yet another host that has cheap, big MySQL databases available.)

AH well, just rambling, thinking about the future and such. I wish I had all the time in the world and the money to live on, I'd make this place my full-time job, it deserves it. Till then, we'll just have to muddle along as best we can, cool? Thanks for listening!

I do have a question though... I was archiving the Ozone thread, and came across some hardware related questions. I was wondering what you thought of having a hardware archive? Or should that just go into Misc? The popup list is getting kinda long with all the archives ya already have...

For the record, I have no issues with the forum lists as they are. I only open the doors that appeal to me at the moment but do like seeing the full list when I come here. This pong thing is gonna be insanely popular.. good thing it's hosted in an asylum eh?

It seem to me that the original way was better. To me, no matter how cool this place is, no matter how much we babble on about Toemuncher, Ozones.CON and IE vs.NN- this place will always be primarily about Web Design. If we're to betray that and to proclaim the purpose of this Asylum to be nothing more than Socioligy, then we might as well turn this place into an elaborate chatroom. Keep purpose in mind, designers- 'cause content is King.

That having been said, allow me to lay forth my suggestion for our Asylum.

I was gonna type out the current structure of the front door, but you can go see it yourself. I was also gonna type a long list of where I thing the forums should go, but I'll spare you. Just these suggestions: The 4 'Design' Forums (OZONE, DHTML/Javascript, Photoshop & SSS) should go up top; they're the 'meat-n-potatos' and should be first access- The general 'desktop creation studio' stuff (3d, animation and stuff like that) should go next- and then should go all the internal 'Asylum' stuff (Site Revs, Mad Sci, Sigs & Pong, etc...) should go in the last category. and the Browser section is just taking up space...

Just my 2 cents left over from a pack of smokes... ooo, I think I'll go have one...

And realize that there's only 15 options from the frontpage, and we all know where they lead to, and we know which ones we're interestd in seeing, so it really doesn't matter too much where on the page they are located.

Fwiw I always enter thru 'Todays active topics'. There could be 100 forums here and I wouldnt know.
