it's happened a couple times, once to me, lots to others,
and i'm not really offended by it or anything,
it's more of a common sense thing.

doc (IMHO) has made some wise choices in his selection of mad scientists.
generally, we get along, even if we don't share the same opinion on matters.
in the things that matter, we're generally mature.

when one of us feels that a thread has 'run its course', they will close it.
sometimes, it seems it's just to "exert authority", but most times, it makes sense.

a simple suggestion: if you feel there is still source for interesting conversation in some area of the closed thread, open a new one. Title it according to the part of the thread that interests you, and push it off in that direction.
The idea of reopening a thread generally seems confusing, it can seem childish (trying to open it, have the 'final say', and close it), and it undermines our authority as a whole.
if the lunatics and maniacs don't see us as a united, meanacing team of mad scientists, they may start to revolt.
and things ALWAYS get messy when that happens.

just my thoughts - feel free to ignore, agree, flame or, even close.

my only comment on the subject is that whoever closes a thread should post as the last post, the reason why it is being closed, and also invite anyone who disagrees to email the closer just incase a valid reason why it should be kept open has been missed by the closer. (Generally there is not a valid reason as most threads are closed with good reason)

There is nothing more frustrating than reading a thread that is closed without a reason being given by the MS or Psycho who deems it fit too close it.

Have the courage of your convictions!

I totally agree VP, whoever closes a thread should make the last post then just to make sure their is no confusion give a breif reason as to why so that posts won't be wasted asking "who closed my thead" or "Who censored me"

just my cent & 1/2 " I still got 1/2 a cent coming to me later...

But on the issue or reopening threads...can we even do that?

Mmm. I also, personally at least, sort of get annoyed when we close threads because we think they're done. Like, if there's no hostility in the thread, and things are ok, and posting in the thread has sort of died down, and someone just closes it, because it seems to be finished. I don't think there's really any point in doing that, I think we should leave them open unless it's really necessary to close one. And it's ok to let things get off topic, as long as no one's throwing insults; there's no real problem with random silly posts, unless they start taking a lot of disk space or something.

Threads can be closed/reopened/deleted/and archived by MS/Pyschotics.

Reopening a thread closed by a different MS/Pyscho imho should be only done if the orignal closer is contacted. I think that is a matter of showing respect.

Closing then reopening a thread shows a lack of respect amongst each other. Courtesy doesnt cost much (and nor does an email)

Opinion on this might vary I bet! heh ~Vp~

I don`t mean to be wishy-washy here, but I think both VP and Slime make good points.
If you have a reason to close a thread, let everyone know why. It`s just the polite thing to do.
If there`s a problem, we know whom to email and discuss it, if that seems necessary for some reason.

Otherwise, they just fall off the edge of the world when we do our archiving..

As for the rebellion, we have to plan a little more in prevention. We can`t just club `em down like we used to , eh ? ~ sigh ~

I miss days gone by when ppl like TwItch^, Milker, DG, et others spoke their minds without being torn to shreds for it! True it was often harsh, but 99% of the time it was relevant, succinct, and fair imho. In a way for me its what made this place a little special if that doesnt sound too odd. Too many newbies seem to wander in here without any respect for the 'real' designers who hang (hung) around here, and offer there honest advice and criticism. Imho this drove alot of old friends away, and I don't blame them at all. I have been close on too many occasions to countto just throw in the towel, but I just can't find the exit! lol.. and if I did I am sure it would be locked anyhoo!

Now..ummm is there a reason for this topic? It seems they only become a breeding ground for another whine session that gets feelings hurt when someone walks in and spanks you silly then it gets closed or something like that.

I've been thinking about bringing this subject up in here for quite some time. However, I realized that having someone else bring it up confirms it's validity; at least to me.

Anywayz, allow me to be blunt. We're bitching a lot more than we used to. Sometimes it's valid, sometimes it's not, but, whatever the case, many times the flames in the gif mean a little more than the number of posts in the thread.

Now, don't get me wrong. I think the bitching is good. It shows we still have bitching rights and are entitled to our opinion. We are, after all, generally regular users with powers mostly directed towards the archiving of threads.

In perception, however, we are not regular users. To them, we serve as a personification of the Asylum itself, a step down from Doc, of course. Hence, when the clouds roar above, they need to feel as if the pigs aren't running the farm, so to speak. That's the reason these new ~kids~ don't respect the seasoned pros, they've got not basis for it.

(Using myself as an example, knowing full well that I won't flame me) Everyone knows Weadah is hot shit. Now, my stuff may be as good or better than his (I wish!), but if every time somebody asked for advice, I tore through him with my 'hotter-than-shit' attitude, I wouldn't have much respect for me either. The mob mirrors these feelings.

The person in this example knows (or should know) who they are, but there are many other stories that run close parallels. We need to keep the infighing and bickering to a minimum, not the sound and thought-out logical discussions, just the infighting and bickering. And if and when flame wars break out again, they must be handled as users, not mad sci's. If you get in a bicker-fight in a thread, ask an objective 3rd party to close it. If you feel the need to get your point across, gather email addys and send them you point of view. Or perhaps you can meet down in IRC (#by_the_bike_racks_at_3_oclock) and bitch about it.

Just have some foresight and check your Mad Sci's at the door.

I've got a novel idea.

Though I always do..~cough~

How about following the "closing it? Then mention why." Rule, and then if someone wants to open it back up for some logical reason above and beyond...well mo' power to ya.

Yeah...it's revolutionary, but then the concept of semi-evolved beings doing a relatively simplistic job of curtailing true stupidity is always balked at.

Barring that, I stick with my omnipresent suggestion of naked sharp-stick fighting to the death televised for my amusement.

Either way works for me...but then I'm not an MS, so everyone can collectively fuck themselves in whichever preferred manner they choose.

Oh wait...I was ready for a full on rant, just didn't realize it until I bothered to read the ascii diarrhea.

Let's begin.

I'm tired of fucking babysitting. It's amazing how sick of it you can get while working security at a club. You'd be floored by the number of whiny children that feel that something is owed to them since they managed to grace everyone with their presence by showing up. Snotty kids that have little else to do but believe mommy's lies that they really are beautiful and brilliant.

Newsflash: You're marginal at best, deal with that facct, overcome it, or sink into the pile of bullshit that you're slinging.

Either way, have a nice day, and please don't come again.

The idea that someone is owed some sort of sweet review, or reverence for their skills just because they deigned to arrive is utter shite. You just got here? Good, sit the fuck back and learn about the board before running off at the bit, and crying over the backlash.

The responsibility of understanding WHY the people here should be respected is entirely on the shoulders of the aforementioned "new kids". You don't show up in a classroom and start telling the professor that he "ain't shit" because he hasn't told you how many books he's published, or how long he's honed his craft.

If you did, guess what the result would be. Guess who'd be whining down at the administration office looking for their tuition back.

The onus is on the new to research what sort of landscape their getting into, and why they should shut up and read through the advice and opinions given. Which ones to take to heart, and which ones to discard are the wages of that learning.

Stupidity breeds stupidity. False pride breeds the same children.

Weadah gets a lot of play in posts (sadly not his own) so I'll use him like a tainted whore for this example too.
Wead and I "arrived" here around the same time, basically if I recall. Both of us had lurked for sometime if I recall as well. Why? Well figuring out the landscape, the people, and the true resources would be a fair bet. Wead has some amazing fucking work...yes suh. However, I never recall him walking around cock-of-the-walk either when he got here, or even now.

A touch of humility, and a true understanding of strength and weakness prevailed there. Wead is a star, a true talent who isn't so pompous as to look only for good comments, and discard any negative notations.

I know Weadah Jones, I've worked with Weadah Jones, you new sirs are no Weadah Jones.

Does Wead deserve respect? Fuck yes. Has he earned it? More than you can know. Does he ever act like he deserves it without earning it? Yeah....right.

I could name a plethora of people here that I've learned a great deal from. Weadah would be at or near the top of that list along with Steve Nelson, Stephen Van Doren, Michael, Kevin, Jamie and a short list of others that I'm too damned lazy to type out. These people have shared with me both the good and the bad, sometimes dismissing my shit as shit, and sometimes elevating it as worthwhile. I cherish that...as I should, because it's the opinions of a mass of people who have worked in the trenches, risen above in so many ways, and earned my respect lock stock and barrel.

I could whine about negative comments, but the fact is that I prefer them to some tripe-ish "Oh it looks wicked, dude!!" These comments help me learn, grow, see what I might not have caught before. A gentle brushing of hubris along with a dose of earned ego: It's a beautiful thing.

If a person can't take criticism....then fuck off, this obviously isn't the place for you. If they weather the storm and stay....then they're made of the stern stuff that a life of art and work requires. So why is it that we're always worried about molly-coddling the newborns and making sure that they don't get any dirt on them while we're busy digging the real trenches?

Fuck that...I babysit enough, as do many people here who regularly spend time trying to help people along...VOLUNTARILY AND ON THEIR OWN TIME!!! Art is subjective...but know the subjectivity doesn't make negative comments any less real. The fact is that everyone can improve...if we point out where occasionally (especially to each other) then we'll grow with each highlight of the weaknesses. If we cower and wait for the "good" comments to come, then we just recylce the same crap that we've always made....where's the progress?

Wanna learn? Good, come share. Wanna whine? Well hey then, there's the door, and I do believe Designs By Mark still has a board open.

~smirk~

Subjectivity...a wonderful thing. I might find Petskull's work to be derative, lacking creativity, style, skill, and beauty. His mom might think differently. Those opinions shant meet...but if he wants more, he'll have to deal with both, knowing where each comes from.

Why?

Because that's his responsibility when he asks for a review. The audience is what you're trying to solicit help from....so why post masturbatory attempts at creating? Just like the idea of the back pat that much??

Want me to "prove myself" to each and every tool that breezes through this place depositing silt and feces in their wake? Fuck that roundly...I say what I say because it's how I feel...want to know if you should respect that? Then go out and find out what I've done.

Want help finding that? Then just ask...it's the beauty of this board..asking will bring results...

Unless you ask another tool.

Dig?

Yeah...suffer bitches, this post is huge, and you can hate whatever you want...but it makes fucking sense.

~grin~

To me at least.

Your Meager Mileage May Vary.

Rip away.

Well this is an original topic

First things first.

If theres a legitimate reason as to why you are opening or closing a thread then do so. Post a reason why you are doing so if it makes you feel all warm and gui inside. I don't think the Asylum has any immediate problems with people abusing there powers of opening/closing threads. Out of the thousand of threads created all but a few dozen go without ever being closed once. This is a web design forum. Its not a matter of life or death. So what if a thread gets closed. Big deal. Even worse its reopened. I'm sure we can all make do. If you feel you created a thread that had worthwhile discussion that a Mad Scientist or Lunatic closes, open a new thread.

On to the latest development in this topic...

We've had this topic so many times now and yet DG, you still miss the point.

Theres really no point in continuing this discussion though. You know how I feel.

2} You spoke of Weadah's humility. That was my point, kindly read the post next time. Back to Weadah's humility: Maybe you should take a little. Maybe that's why Weadah's close to a legend- and you, sir, are not.

P.S. OK, three things: I'm not an artist, I thought that was clear. In fact I believe I've mentioned that a couple of times before. I'm strictly a coder, that's that whole left-brained thing. Don't belong in a designer's forum? Hmm....sue me.

Respectfully speaking DG, I don't think you do get the point. This really isn't in reference to you. Personally I don't know why you've been brought into this situation. The point, at least my point, isn't that you should be nicer to people posting or that you should praise them. My point is your criticism should be constructive. It doesn't have to be nice. It doesn't have to be mean. The perfect example would be DL's commenting on Dingo's website. My problem with his comments wasn't that they were mean or untrue but had no bearing to what was being asked.

Eh was I wrong? Can Lunatics not edit posts? I forget how the ladder works. Is Lunatic a mod or no?

Just my take on the constructive criticism bit - people are asking for reviews/critiques and 'I didn't like it' (or variants) is a valid response (just not very useful) - it is often important to judge people's gut feelings about things (lets be honest if someone posts a graphic/site for review and it is good then a lot of people will say that they liked it without saying why). More useful is the 'I liked/didn't like it because ....' and then we have more constructive reviews '.. you might want to look at this resource'. All three kinds of response are perfectly acceptable although telling people what the problems were and/or directing them to further resources (or offering detailed advice) is obviously the better approach.

I can't really think that we can lay down any codes of conduct like:

"All reviews must be constructive."

but most people do this anyway.

I agree about explaining why a thread was locked as it is often seen as an arbitary decision (and pos. a criticism of the people involved in the thread).

Not sure if that made sense oh well...

I wasn't commenting on his website. In order to get to the image our friend dingo wanted reviewed, I had to first access his main page. On that page, in fact just about the only thing on it, was a reference to himself being the "elite webmaster".

Referring to oneself as elite while asking for a review on your image, is very relevant to reviewing the image. The point of view of the person creating the image is a factor.

But, I've just got my head shoved up my ass, so what the fuck do I know?

I find it funny how everyone makes a *HUGE* stink over a rude comment I make, not taking into account all the rude comments *they've* made themselves, and not taking into account all the times that my comments are in fact positive and very helpful.

Nobody said anything about needing to be an artist to be here, but if you're not an artist, and you don't know what it's like to be part of this process...on either *both* sides of the coin (yes...as an artist, you *must* deal with criticsim, constructive or not), then you have no perspective from which to speak about that process.

Yes Weadah your absolutely right. Both Petskull any myself simply aren't qualified to comment on someones behavior. I was referring to a particular incident and I made it fairly clear. I even told DG my comments didn't pertain to him.

It is March now Weadah. Its been at least a few weeks since anyone has seen the now famous farewell posts by either you, twitch^ or DG. If your so unhappy over the level of talent here in the Asylum and feel that you are a babysitter, by all means take a leave of absense.

Jestah, have you been spending a lot of time building models lately? The ventilation, or lack thereof seems to have whittled away what little you had to start with.

You drag ancient history into a post that was merely pertaining to someone's dislike of you and/or your stupidity (level of intelligence, same animal, sans polite wording) and then proceed to involve two people who didn't even make the fucking "offensive" post that you're backlashing against?

I thought you were of age to vote, not suckle the pacifier.

That must be wondrous in debate hall if this is your "strategy". I'd be scared to see you dig a deeper hole for your team by rehashing failed arguments of ages past.

~shakes head~

This is egg....this is your face, I'm actually finding it sad that you want them so closely related considering that I was finally managing to stomach you for the first time. Strange to think that I gave you a lot more credit than you seem to be due. That's disappointing. For a moment I had actually given up on thinking of stupidities of the past and thought to watch you move on.

Jesus, that's just fucking sad.

I want to find some pithy comment for that...but I can't.....it's just sad man.

Yes Peter, I thought we were making progress also.

It really is a shame, in terms of respect, I have to seperate the artist from the person. I really do respect and value your opinions as an artist. As a person I can't stand you, but the feeling seems to be mutual so I suppose no ones really upset here. I have to admit I'm honestly suprised you would take offense to my comments. This doesn't seem to be such ancient history with you. In fact it seems everytime a conflict emerges, you end your replies with something to the effect of now you remember why you left or you don't know why you came back.

This isn't about teams DG. This is something you never unerstood. The only ones on any team here seems to be you, DL, Twitch, and Weadah. For whatever reason there is an attack on one of you is an attack on all of you. At least thats the way you guys come off to me. I suppose this is also a bit ironic too.

This thread serves of no use anymore, but its only a matter of time before Twitch makes his appearance. I'll leave it open for him.

JACKASS: I quoted the single line of text on the front page of his website, and referred to it when commenting on his image. You know, the image that asked for opinions on?

So.....come to think of it, I don't supppose that would be a comment about his webpage.

You fucking moron. ( <--incidentally, weadah called you and petskull clueless. I don't believe "clueless" referes to artistic ability...but I may be wrong.)

Heh.

Oh yeah -

Ever think that maybe the reason you seem to think of "an attack on one of is an attack on all of you" might* be due to the fact that everytime one of you pissheads makes an attack on one of us, you drag the rest of into it somehow?

So ease off on your hard-on there son, you might just hurt yourself.

So fuck it.
*joins the fray*

I don't give a shit about opening and closing threads. Close.. 'em.... re-open 'em..... abuse the power... whatever.... honestly I never gave a shit. 75% of the time it's just easier to agree with people than try to explain to them the pointlessness of it all.
I'm sure if there's a real problem somewhere, Doc will take care of it.

On other issues -
I could really care fuckin' less about the majority of things said here.
Silence, if they haven't caught on to some of this shit by now.... they can go back out and play with their imaginary friends.... ya know?
The kids can come in and watch PetTool stomp around like he's on top of the world.
Jestah.... your remarks about "famous farewell posts" is as lame as your web-zine idea.
Do us a favor and fill your friend's head's with your stupidity... and stop bringing the shit here.

My post... while hollow, carries more truths than you bark in a year.
Stop bickering... and go back to being completely useless.

Wish I could say the same. Of course, I seem to get dragged into posts that I have nothing to do with anyway...so it's easier if I just show up on my own

Hmm? What's all this then? It's a beautiful day outside, go outside and play! I'm having fun with the newest www.changeMinds.com iteration, all I need to ad now is some controls, and maybe a CPU meter pegged at 99-100%!

My advice? Go design a website, you'll all feel better.

Actually, I was thinking about this, and feel I really should insist that everyone who's managed to post in this thread should go now and create a new webpage, like right now! Optionally, you can create something really neat as an add-on to any existing site you have available. (But it's gotta be really *neat*.) One page art pages are acceptable, you don't need to go code-crazy, though you can. (I will ;-) I'll go create a new thread for us to post our creations to, hmm? I wasn't planning on adding another project to my plate, but so it goes, I posted here too! Go now, shoo! Make sure you have fun!

Amen...oh well I'm off, but as a parting shot I'd like to say...

I like the Idea of closing and giving a reason. It lets us know who did, and why they did it, then if we don't like it we can deal with it in a civilised manner by polite emails, not starting up bitch session threads.

I know that this may already have been said before, but i feel the need to say it again., and since everyone (almost ) in this thread has done what they felt the need to do, I do to. (I don't think that even made sense).

Oh, and I am well aware of my capabilities, but I do remember a thread in here once where we needed another thread reopened, and we had to ask the Doc to do it becuase we couldn't, and I haven't anything on the subject of reopening threads since then, so here's to my ignorance.

Now I know we can do it, and I'm a better person for it.

Now...does everyone fewel better for having the chance to have their say? Good? Good. I think we're about done here somehow.

Cheers, till another day

OK, I'm going to post one reply to this thread, and then, maybe I should close it? Maybe not, it'll just die on it's own, I figure.

I agree, it's only polite to post one last entry to a thread before closing it, saying what you're doing and why. I'll bet that 90% of the confusion some people feel is when their threads just get closed and they don't know why. Politeness is cheap and easy, costs us nothing and makes the world just run smoother IMHO, I use it as often as possible!

(Note: as with all things, use this in moderation! )
