Topic: Current 'ripping' in the Aslum...how to handle it? (Page 1 of 1)

Because of recent events of 'ripping' and 'coincidental' creativity here http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum3/HTML/002456.html and here http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum14/HTML/000927.html , I thought that maybe it was time that we had a disscussion about this.

What, if anything, can we do to avoid such occurances? And how do we wish to go about dealing with it? Should we, as Psycotics and Mad Scientists, take on a greater role, as 'correctors' maybe? Or do we need a new forum for 'reporting' such things?

It does seem to represent some sort of new 'trend' here in the Asylum, and one that I personally do not like. Any input would be appreciated.

Hey, hey, hey! Put down the pitchforks and the torches! My lightsaber is just my own recreation of Obi-Wan's lightsaber from several pictures I've seen on the net. Its very possible that jmhc just recreated Obi-Wan's as well.

krets i flipped yours and rescaled it and got exactly the same result, if you have done as you say he would have had to do exactly the same as you all the way through, i cant find even the slightest difference that would show that it was someone elses work, there would be some subtle diffrerences somewhere, also this example is not the only one of what ws is on about it seems to be an up and coming trend here. Although some may take it as a compliment to have their work duplicated by others i personally think that without permission and as has been seen here elsewhere it pisses the original artist off..

Yeah Krets, I already said that we should wait for you to have your say over the matter there (see philosophy forum)...but there are other occurances, as well. And the 'trend', if you will, is disturbing...

And I dearly hope that in your case, it turns out not to be a rip...and that we can then concentrate on the other case...

That's pretty damned close....

well i decided to go the other way round and this is included distortion by scaling both to same size and then blowing both up by 350%

any differences would be easily highlighted this way and if ya think it looked close then check this out (allow for distortion by red glow effect)

i blew it up to about 1000 pixels and there is no difference at pixel level except minor shading due to the overlap of the red glow

Yep, you can even see the little imperfection at the base where I accidentally dragged my stylus across my Wacom.

well all things considered i think this is a rip plain and simple...if jhmc pulled up a psd file that exactly reproduced this image then i would be surprised as hell

Yea, it doesn't seem as though jmhc was trying to cause any trouble at all. It seems to be a misunderstanding. He wasn't implying that he created the lightsaber himself, he just took the lightsaber and applied a different type of 'laser beam' to it. I believe he was talking about this when he talked about his tutorial.

Im starting to think leaving threads open for public bashings is our best option. Theres no point in taking time out of our days to archieve or edit posts. Lets just leave them open and let everyone take a good shot at the unoriginal, low life, scum sucking, walking, posting, peice of garbage. Who knows, maybe it will deter them from ripping others, or they'll just leave. Both options I'm happy with.

This sort of thing is not by any means new.

For some reason people lately seem to be thinking that this influx of jackasses is an entirely new phenomenon. It's not. It's cyclical. It has happened to some degree or another since the Asylum began.

What has changed is this "oooh, we're gonna get you" attitude. It has been demonstrated time and again that the best thing that can be done is exactly what jestah just said, which is exactly what many other people, and exactly what Doc himself has said many times.

Let them hang themselves.

Put away the idle threats of scalping and the angry shouting. It serves nothing.

People will get involved on a case by case basis, and that's the best way it could be.

But what about the angry mob, and torch wielding sociopaths that I was putting together?

hmmm ok he has apologised fair enough,but,no where here or in his other threads was there a mention of oh its the beam i am offering to do a tutorial on. Maybe not in this case but certainly in others recently there has been blatent ripping, peronally speaking i think a good way to deal with this would be this...

leave the thread with the offending artwork etc untouched but maybe create a ripped thread here and post the links to the relevant threads there and let everyone decide from there..

then the person who has had their work ripped should choose what if any action should be taken.

A bit of good old fashioned good manners and courtesy mixed with some imagination would go a long way to stop problems like this occuring,

how long would it take to:

1.ask someone if ya can use theirt work
2.credit them

hell if ya were going to borrow ya neighbours car you sure as hell wouldnt just drive away in it without some prior agreement, why coz its stealing, same prionciple applies here. if they say no make ya own, hell its half the fun..

We can usual 'police' our own quite effectively and so it might be better if first you email the person and explain the situation so they can clarify matters as this kind of thing often arises from a misunderstanding or ignorance rather than intentional ripping (the above example would have been a pretty blatant and 'in your face' rip). If the rippee is an inmate then its their call after that.

Thanks for all the input, guys...that's why I posted this...to get some feedback on the issue.

As the board gets bigger, I think we will encounter this type of stuff ofter...having a 'standard' way of dealing with it is nice...
