Topic: Ripper Report - XML (Page 1 of 1)

I think I mentioned it might be a good idea to offer a kind of XML news feed so that people can include RR news on rips and stuff on their site. As an example I threw this together:

Thoughts?

I have proposed having the PSPong match details sent out as XML and we will be offering things like tutorial details from the GN. It will be a way to keep our family of websites connected together.

Sounds like you might want to look into RSS. It's an XML language for giving data about news like that. I'm afraid I don't know where the actual specs are, but www.webstandards.org has an example (look for the 'xml' icon at the bottom).

If you're going to use XML for a news syndication feature, then you should probably use RDF (RSS like Slime mentioned).
Infact it seems that's the direction you're leaning towards, so cool.

I have a sweet RSS parser for PHP if you need it.

synax: So you did - I'll steal anything thats not nailed down. Sorry it something I've been pondering for a bit - while it may not be perfect for the Ripper Report at the moment (as I explained in the original post) I would like to develop a format which we could use at the GN, PSPong and, if required, RR. So throw in your ideas and resources too - we have Expat if that helps.

Great work guys...and funny thread...

Yeppers, getting a news service up and running was one of the things that the idea in my head for the ripperreport started with...

As some of you know, during the BSS thing, I was running all over the net, trying to get the word out. It was an exhausting processes, in and of itself. At that point, I wondered why there wasn't a 'network' already in place to make such a thing much easier on the victim. Sure, there were sites that wanted to help, but none of them were interconnected, esp. in the department of information sharing. This awareness dawned on me...sharing the information would help the victims immensely (and would be a great deterence to perps). The way it stands in the net now, perps have a pretty 'easy' time of it with ripping...because someone needs to first recognize the rip, then persue the ripper. With the enormous growth in websites in recent time, the chances of that actually happening are small (esp. when one considers that a lot of rippers rip, then do alterations to what they rip). Also, during the BSS thing, I found out just how difficult it is to 'track down' a ripped graphic...where did the rip come from? It's like looking for the proverbial needle-in-a-haystack thing...there are just tons of graphic sites out there...and if the graphic is a bit 'altered', it's very difficult to pin it down...most likely, only the original artist could identify it as a rip...or someone who has seen it before (and can remember where they saw it...). So that is how the 'News thing' got started in my head...

And you guys have done a great job on this so far...

I've used the script Synax suggested to grab the feed and parse it at the GN:

I'll have to tweaks things as the layout it produces is ugly and it isn't happy with RSS 1.0 feeds (which I'm also looking at grabbing) but it shows how simple that all is.

In the next few days I'll knock together a script that will write out RSS from a DB to a static file so that we can have the XML dynamically updated when we update our news.

InI: What we want to do is also let other people use the feeds on their own sites and we'll want to add them to the aggregators out there (it'll help spread the word and increase traffic) so we'll have to stick to the standard - I went for RSS 0.9x as we didn't need the extra elements that RSS 1.x has.

[edit: and we are working on a little web design news aggregation so we want it to fit into that too]

I'd recommend that inmates register over there and give us their thoughts and input.
