I think its pretty cool looking, perhaps if it was Japan. I don't really think New York's setting is that high-tech, I think they should of gone with something a bit more traditional.

There was a link floating around a while back to the site where they were displaying all of the entries that were bing considered, and there were some pretty in depth diagrams and illustrations of each that gave you a far better idea of what was actually going on.

Once you see the details, they all seemed far less ugly, and most were actually pretty well thought out.

I think the idea that the site should be left vacant is completely absurd (not to mention with such prime real estate it would simply never happen). Of course the idea that even taller towers should be built to defy terrorism is equally absurd.

I'm somewhat ambivalent towards this particular design.

{{edit - GN snuck one in while I was posting -

Well, the issue I see there is, almost every significant skyscraper in every american city has taken that same criticism. Then, a few years later, the same people who said such things are full of pride becuase they live in the city that has this wonderful new building

Yes the architect is the same guy who did a museum in London and the design (like a mutating cube) is shocking but I think it is growing on me. I think a bold statement is what is needed and this may be it.

I don't like the chosen design nearly as much as this one by THINK with the two lattice style towers.

I guess the winner will do.

How come? I kind of thought it was a defiant statement to those who want to see our way of life extinguished.

Bugs .. I reason why I prefer the winner is because the one structure that is going to tower way in the sky is going to be 1,776 ft tall in the air .. and I love that is signifies 1776 the year of USA's independence .. and not to mention it will have gardens upon each level signifying life lives on

Bugimus - The idea that building a taller skyscraper makes any sort of defiant statement to people who want to see us all dead just seems amazingly silly to me.

The only people it will say anything to is ourselves, and it makes a statement really about how stupidly we spend insane amounts of money for no reason other than making something beigger than someone else.

Which in turn just speaks volumes about the collective penis envy of the human race.

=)

In my opinion, the winningsubmission should be chosen on the basis of what it can offer the community - how much use are we going to get from the space, and how much can we improve the overall condition of the city in our use of this space?

That, to me, makes a statement. Knock it down, we'll build something better. Not necessarily something bigger.

=)

Ok, thanks for the clarification. So given those options, I'll go with bigger *and* better

Wang, I didn't know about the 1776 part, that's pretty cool.

DL the link might be this, but I'm sure I seen a better site with them all tho.....hhmm... oh well it's been picked now. And as I never really comment on things here about all Philosophy and other Silliness, so I won't really start.

But as far as I see the design is nice, with the gardens and stuff. Still it would stick out like a sore thumb, but so did 11 September, among the other new that day. So to be something that sticks out and look nice is better for remembrance of the dead on that terrible day. Plus look over all the ideas now is this a far better idea.

Personally, I never really liked any of the designs. But architecture usually feels different in reality than it does in illustations, so I'll go with the flow.

quote:
Many New Yorkers believe no development is appropriate as the area is a mass grave.

I agree this is ridiculous, not only because leaving the land vacant would be an ubelievable waste resulting in further, and self-inflicted, detriment to local economy, but because it isn't grave. No one is buried there, after all. Sure, many people died there and that should be recognized. But a much, much better way to do that is to erect a memorial, which will be part of the redevelopment.

quote:
Still it would stick out like a sore thumb

The same thing was said about the Twin Towers when they were constructed. New Yorkers hated them -- two uninteresting, oversized, boxy towers. Eventually, though, the buildings were viewed as strong, magnificent sources of pride.

One thing I've always wondered since 9/11...do America actually posses fire fighting equipment which would be able to battle a fire 100 storeys up?

I'm pretty sure that if the towers had remained standing they have water hose outlets on each floor for fire fighting. However, in this case with all the jet fuel, I doubt they could have had much luck because it was burning extremely hot on several of those floors. I think they probably would have had to just let it run its course but they perhaps could have prevented it from spreading to the lower floors. I'm just speculating wildly here... don't mind me

A little off topic....do you feel people will want to work in the new Trade Center after what has happened ? I'm sure I wouldn't. I would just always feel it's a target place as 9/11 wasn't the first attack.

I wouldn't want to work in *any* building like that. There are plenty of other dangers besides terrorists. Remember I live in the land of earthquakes
