Is it possible to develop 2 Illustrator pages within one file? For example: I have been working on a certain file these past few weeks. There is a 2nd page I have to develop relating to this file. Can I open a new canvas WITHIN my existing file? That way I have ONE file with 2 pages, instead of 2 separate file labled "page1" and "page 2" ?

Thanks

There isn't a built in multi-page setup, but you can get a plugin to do this from HotDoor Software.
Free demo too.
I have used other software by them.......their perspective tool is not bad.
Adobe InDesign 2 however does have this function and is giving QuarkXpress a run for their money in the page layout
arena.

~edit~ MultiPage 1.0 is for AI 9

Yes you can have multiple pages in Illustrator...Under document set up do the following....(this is all under the assumption that you're using 8.5x11)
1. Set your page dimensions to 11x17 and click on tile full pages...You'll notice that your pages are now numbered.

Sweet, I didn't know you could do that I'm now using Freehand at home actually (due partly to the fact that it works great with Flash and partly that I can't find my Illustrator cd) and it does have a multi-page function, just FYI.

Jeni- thanks for the tip. I followed your directions but couldn't get it to work correctly. I went to File > Document Setup > entered width=11 inches height=17 inches. Clicked on "tile full pages." My canvas went to the parameters I specified (11 and 17) but I am not sure how this helps in including multiple canvases in one file. Geez. I know you know what you are talking about- you have proven it many many times! I just cannot get it to work .

Thanks

Yeah I too had trouble with the set up but if you change the orientation to landscape in Document setup instead of portrait
you get two pages 8.5x11 side by side.

If you wanted to set up say 18 pages and at some point wanted to delete page 6...how is this accomplished or change the order of pages?

As far as printing or creating a PDF this setup only seems to recognize the 11x17 format as a single page,
not as multiple pages.

Jeni ....how would you print 18 pages separately or create a multipage PDF?
Copy and paste each page to new document?

At this point it setup doesn't appear to be a true muliti-page doc... or is this setup for layout purposes only?

thanks......

Sorry guys.
What I described does *not* create multiple canvases. You originally asked about pages. That's what this produces...multiple pages...there's a difference...Okay here's what you do. Do like you are doing in the doc setup 17 wide by 11 tall. In page setup, make sure that 8.5x11 is selected and has vertical orientation. Note that the page tiling changes in your doc and shows the page numbers...So if you made your doc 10 pages (850"x11) you would have the 10 pages side by side. If you print that document it will print all 10 pages on 8.5 x 11. If you save it as a pdf, we've discovered that it doesn't really show a page break..it just shows up 850" wide. Illustrator is not intended to be a layout package and that's why it's limited when it comes to things like this...If you were, say, doing a 10 page newsletter in Illustrator, you'd need to work differently then I have specified...You'd have to work in printer spreads and I'd talk to your printer about how they'd want the pages to out put and you'd adjust your file accordingly...Illustrator is literal. WYSIWYG, meaning that 11x17 that includes page tiling will print out 2 separate pages for you on your laser printer or whatever, but when it goes to the service bureau, depending on what they set that file to do...CR08 it would be extremely helpful for me if you could let me know what it is you're doing in illustrator. Is it a brochure? What is its final output going to be? On press? Inhouse? I can answer your questions better if I know what's going to happen to the file in the end.
Help me help you
Edit>Forgot to answer the question about pulling a "page" out. I think from what I described above, you get the picture...You wouldn't have to rearrange your doc...BUT it would print out a blank "page" if you didn't. Does that make sense?

Jeni, Jeni, Jeni. . .my good friend. That is exactly what I wanted to accomplish and it works out great! Awesome. Thanks so much. To give you a little background on my project: I am designing 5 sets of 2 page marketing Fact Sheets (10 total) for an investment firm. Goes out each quarter updating Brokers, etc. about our portfolios. . . . Anyways, prior to my arrival all of these Fact Sheets were designed in Power Point and printed out on our color printer. My job is to transfer all info into Illustrator and send them to an outside printer. At this point I have replicated all PPoint into Illustr. and waiting for some updated numbers before I send them to the printer. So since I have 2 pages for each Fact Sheet, I have been developing 2 separate files, one for page 1 and one for page 2. I figured there was an easier way to do get both canvases on one file. By the way, sorry about using the incorrect terminoogy. Pages, canvas- now I know the difference and will be more careful in the future! With your doc setup, is is possible to just print either page 1or page 2?

Well thats about it. My next step is to phone the printer, introduce myself- and ask him some questions regarding print specs. This is what I plan to ask hm:

- OK to copy/paste text from PP to Illustr?
- what type of file format do you require?
- how much lead time do you need? (turnaround)
- What materials do you need? disk, zip, email, . . .
- RGB vs. CMYK. Most of my color is in CMYK, but some are still RGB. I know that the color that appears on my screen most likely will not be what gets printed out! So I guess I answer my own question: Is it OK to use RGB-answer no! CMYK is what gets printed. RGB is misleading.

Whew! So far that is the most I've written here in the Asylum. Any thoughts on my project? I am trying to cover all bases. . . .

Ok good that you are thinking about your printer...My anticipation is that they are going to tell you that they want a single illustrator doc for each page OR use quark or Pagemaker...I'm sorry I don't remember if you have either of these. However they can give you specs for running the plate spread in AI. Also ask about bleeds and "live area". Good rule of thumb for us is to keep all live copy at least 1/8" from the trim. Let us know how it works out.
