how to apply the PMS-color 429 to some
text in Illustrator... :?

You can get PMS swatches in the Window/Swatch Libraries/ submenu. (The submenu options include PMS colors.) Once you've chosen your PMS color, you can drag it to your main Swatches palette for safekeeping if you want.

Thanx Thunder, however... that menu is empty for me and I can't find any swatch libraries..doh!

Hmm... I can't think of an Illustrator installation, legitimate or otherwise, that would lack those basic libraries. Just unzip this to your Swatch Libraries folder in your Illustrator directory, I guess. (First check that folder to make sure it really is empty -- it could be that your stuff just isn't showing up, in which case you can open the library with the Open... command.)

On a related note:

Make sure your document is CMYK when you use Spot Colors. I ran into problems getting my seps to RIP on one document's images because the maker had created the EPS files in RGB. If you don't RIP these yourself this may save you some money if you are having a service bureau do your Pre-press work to your documents.
