I've recently completed this logo for a college graphic design course. The assignment was to choose a letter and design a graphic that represents a noun starting with that letter. It was an interesting assignment and all of the results from other students was fantastic! Tell me what you think!

I sketched the (S)py shapes first, scanned them, and executed the lines in Illustrator with the pen tool.

EDIT: Removed the extraneous sections of the image to isolate the S.

Editing out the contents of a post on the same day it was posted because of a lack of replies is silly. This is a forum that's not frequently visited, and in the forums that *are* frequently visited, you have to wait at *least* 24 hours before giving up on people replying.

That's too bad, because it was actually pretty good. If only I'd said something!

Then again, I probably would have just fed his superiority complex.

Well, I'll see if I can post it again. The server that it was hosted on went down for good.

Nothing personal about the "superiority complex" jab, by the way; it's an inescapable consequence of a few of the things you've said earlier. In fact, you get a point or two for not mentioning my statement, so I cheerfully apologize for it.

What I think... The counter in the "p" is rounded and the counter in the "s" is not the same. The line widths also vary. I know that the "py" is a different font, but I don't think they work well with the "s".

It may be an optical illusion, but, the "p" and the "y" also do not seem to share the baseline of the "s". They should. Other then that, it's cute. Could make a nice little typography piece in your portfolio.

I agree with Jeni a great deal.

The different letter styles just don't gel. The curves of the S could stand a bit of refinement as well...they are pretty rigid and somewhat akward.

The 'spy' adorning the top is interesting.

It's a little hard to say much for certain as the web-optimization leaves a bit to be desired.

Well, like I said, the primary focus was on the S and the spy figure. The rest of it came later. The fonts don't match because they aren't equivalent fonts. The S has some sharp edges to it primarily because it was a college graphic design project. Of course, I've noticed all the errors beforehand, and if I intend to lock it into my college portfolio, I would refine it, yes.

[DL-44] what web-optimization are you referring?

what they said i'd also contrast the small type with the display copy more, keep it sans-serif but make it a less rounded typeface. interesting start tho, it has some potential...

Morgan - not enough antialiasing on the large type, too much antialiasing on the small type.

Result: jaggies on the large type, blurry small type.

Even if it's intended for print, if it's being presented on screen, it needs to be optimized for the screen =)

I'm afraid I don't understand this point:

What part of the statement do you not understand? The sharp edges of the S or the fact that it was a college project?

The sharp corners of the S are due to incomplete curves in Illustrator. The original S which is on cover of the US News and World Report Spy issue is not as blocky.

Ahh, the college project excuse. The S with the Spy figure were completed in less... way less than an hour. It was due the next day as the semester's first assignment for Graphic Design. Refining the (S)py shapes wasn't priority because of the nature of the project. My truly good work (perfect n everythin' ) only comes out on actual client work when my firm is getting paid.

Morgan, I am curious as to why you're taking a graphic design class if you're already a professional designer? Are you an intern? I've been thinking about going and taking maybe an airbrush course lately, it seems I miss school in some sick way.

And I mean no harm by this, but

If that's true, why even waste your money on classes? Sorry to bring it up, it just saddens me to read something like that. I try to take pride in every piece I work on (for money or not).

And, to add to Jeni's question - why bother posting it here to see what people think if it's not an accurate example of your quality work, and it's something you did quick without much concern, that you already know the flaws of, and aren't interested in optimizing for the environment in which it's being displayed?

Usually there is some sort of...point, or purpose, when someone decides to post an example of their work.

Either to get critique - ways to improve, or to show off, or what have you.

So, I guess I'm just suffering form general confusion at this point...

The point? The point was to receive critique. I know of some flaws but perhaps more experienced designers here may see more than I. For instance, I didn't notice the "py" didn't mesh well with the "S" or that the "the life of a" was too anti-aliased. There's jaggies on the "y" but that's the result of saving from 300dpi to screen resolution.

Nothing wrong at all. That's what I meant by what I said. BUT if you're not giving it your full effort, then what's the point?

P.S. I'm glad you decided to repost the logo. I meant to say that earlier.
