1-the summary of the lengthy thread was you should not get viruses by downloading files that have them...(duh)..
and also that there is no anti viral pgm out there that most agree is the best...in fact everyone agreed to disagree...

2-that being the case i chose mcafee and loaded it and a day later tried to unload it and in doing so it took an important system file with it ... fbwin95.vxd .....a system file....So now when i start the machine i get a black screen telling me it is missing...
the folks at mcafee support on the web have available the steps to correct this problem....8 pages of directions for ripping apart your registry...(not this kid..)

3-any one with any serious suggestions how i might correct the situation? i ain't gonna rip apart my sacred registry..

moral to this story:

- don't get a virus, or an anti viral program or if you are stupid enough to buy mcafee- don't try removing the pgm..

Countryboy, I've said that you should choose AVP/KAV, because it is the best AV available...

Anyway, Sash, my favorite virus? I-Worm.Hybris. You know, the one related to Snowhite and Seven Dwarfs. Why? It's very well engineered, has support for plugins, has a very nice copyright message ("HYBRIS (c) Vesna"), etc...

max,

i am fully aware of tyour suggestion and appreciated your feed back at that time.

in fact i have it loaded on my machine already as i noted in response to you back then. however, i am reluctant to use Kaparsky for 2 very specific reasons:

1) you were the only one to make that suggestion and i was hoping others would join in with you and say likewise...

2) also it is well known in the u.s.a. that Many viruses have come out of eastern europe and i am therefore hesitant to choose that particular avp for that reason.. a bit like having the fox guard the chicken house.

in fact i raised this this geographical issue as a concern of mine with you and suggested you might wish to start a separate thread on this but you did not respond to it, so i felt out of respect for your feelings that i would not pursue the issue any further.

i am always grateful for your guidance. you certainly Know your Stuff; but i hope you understand my reasons and do not take it as a personal affront.

I like Sub7. It's actually a trojan horse, but it's lots of fun to use on my friends and parents(with permission of course).

you know, countryboy, there's simply not an real reason to worry about your virus scanner. seriously. in the 12 years, or so, that i have been using computers, and the 50% of that has been spent online, i've gotten a total of, probably, six or seven viruses. and none of the were truly detrimental.

so who cares which one you run? pick one, move the fuck on.

The only virus I have ever gotten that was a pain was one on my mac. It wasn't really a virus, it was simple a file that over wrote all of the primary files. This was well over 8 years ago. And could have been easily prevented, had I not been stupid and attempted to install a file that I new to be completely unreliable, and unsecure.

All other virii have been detected, and were not given to me from a hostile source, but were downloaded by me in order to see how they work and how you can fix them. I never learned how they work or how you can fix them... maybe after I get a handle on asembly programming.

But I don't think you have much to worry about. Simple virus protection should be enough for the avarage user. You should not have any enemies, and you probabally don't have a huge online presence that would cause you to be a target. If you want to be on the safe side, have a virus scanner constantly running. But it really doesn't matter which, because they can not honestly keep up with the new virus strains that are created daily. The ones that will hurt are the ones they can't protect you against.

you said one thing and everyone said one thing so in summary there really is no guide for one re out to protect from viruses other than:

-don't download something with a virus (duh)
-the standard anti-virus pgms are the pits

and as i stated at the out set i also was using Innoculate IT when starting out with this question.

funny...in summary there is no answer to my original question...like all the meaningful questions in life ya just learn to live with the question...(that's a secret very few know...)
