I've just rememberd a nagging question I've been meaning to ask you guys. Firstly, how to you set your window to exactly 640 pixels wide? Is there a way other than clicking and dragging?
And also another thing thats been bugging me. When I open another window when browsing the net, is there a default setting somewhere that you can set up to determine the size of the new window, or is it determined by the web page you are currently viewing??

Please help, this little point is really bugging me, sometimes I manage to open a new window and it is maximised then another time it will be about 90% etc. . . . So annoying when you don't understand.

To launch a new window with exactly 640 px wide, use this code:

Put this in the head

<script language="JavaScript">
<!--
function MM_openBrWindow(URL,window name, width=640 ){
window.open(url,window name,width=640 );
}
//-->
<script>

Put this in the body tag
<Body blah, blah, blah,
onLoad="MM_openBrWindow('whatever.html','window name','width=640, height=300')">

thats should work .... I think

Oh yeah, not a clue on how to change the settings on the default for the browser size, although I think when you drag a window out to a certain size I think all the windows after that are that size ... make sense? Im not sure about that though.

Check this out--it's called a bookmarklet. Just create a new bookmark in your browser using this as the destination:

javascript:void(outerWidth=640);void(outerHeight=480)

Then, click that bookmark and it will change your browser to 640x480. I have a couple set up for different sizes. I know this one will work in NN, but I'm not sure about IE. Go to www.bookmarklets.com to see more. They make lots of useful tools.

By the way, I'm pretty sure that the size of the next new window to open will be the same size as the last window you CLOSED. Check it out in windows, but I'm pretty sure that's the way it is in nost browsers. Usefull if you're going to be stacking a bunch of image downlaods in new windows.

Agreeing with Doc...of course...but adding one addendum:

I believe it's the size of the last UnMaximized window you closed. I find that _blank targetted links always popup in non-maximized browser windows, even if the last browser window closed was maximized.

I normally drag mine out near maximum to avoid annoying resizing when hitting a targetted link.

Of course for my own sites I set JavaScript popup window sizes just to annoy the hell out of people, and keep my fingerlocked stranglehold on my visitors' experience.

Hah! You think that's annoying, what do you think about the little "resize before opening" script I have for the glass tutorial? You don't see it unless your window is not quite wide enough, in which case it pushes it out just that little bit, heh. I had to balance which is most annoying - a brand new window with no directory buttons, or a resize of your current window? I opted for the second one, plus, it seemed like a cool thing to be able to do! <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/biggrin.gif">

hey Doc -- nice to see you've sent the Hands On to their own domain <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/biggrin.gif"> Neat trick too...I went back with a small window just to see.

One problem though -- you're automatic redirect from the old hands on page gives me a 404 error (incidentaly, it's the same url you post as your second link -- http://www.handson.nu//handson/index.shtml . it doesn't go anyhwere. removing the extra dash doesn't work either...removing the extra dash and the extra handson does though).

For what it's worth, I've noticed at home that NN always pops up a new window at the same size as my current one, but IE never does for some reason. I think it does the same thing at work, but can't be sure about that.

I know Dan, thanks though -- I got there, it works with or without the index.shtml. Just wanted to make sure Doc knew the redirect didn't work. Also a little confused why you post the correct link, and then a couple sentences later a FAR FAR different link.....too many Meds Doc?? lol

you can only be the devil once a lifetime, Dan. Lets let him enjoy it...until he responds to this, at which time he will no longer be a devil.

ANd how sad is that?

Thanks for the call on the redirect guys! I kept seeing that one show up in my 404 records, but couldn't figure where it was coming from! Finally I realized that a lot of folks have this (somewhat damaged) URL, http://www.ozones.com/~drozone/handson/ - This works, but only because of a quick hack on the server end to fix a lot of broken links from other places.
http://www.ozones.com/~drozone/ == http://www.ozones.com/

Get it? My patented XSSI/Javascript hack to figure where you wanted to go based on where you tried to go didn't take that one into account. I fed it a completely inelegant hack again, if (wrong URL) { url= right URL; }, heh. Thanks!
