Preserved Topic: .htm not .html ?? (Page 1 of 1)

For years, Doc used the file extension .htm when writing web pages.
This seems to have been stopped lately, but I was wondering why the 16 bit extension had been used for such a long time.

traditionally, on a windows server, youre supposed to use .htm: a 3 letter extension. guess it goes back to the win3.x series or something or other. in unix, you can use any length extension you want. i use .html files just fine on my win servers.

frontpage default file extension is .htm, and im sure there are several others that are as well.

why doc changed? i dunno :-)

he probably changed for the same reason I did; I got terribly tired of erasing L's from the end of all the files I wrote because I referenced them as .htm files. galdarned notepad...(razzrafrrazrazaraza)

I've been using .htm recently myself... I like it better, I don't know why.

it's because you are not as highly evolved as us, the htmlers (pronounced Hay-timel-er). You are but a mere htmer (pronounced Hay-timer).

I used to use htm exclusively but have since switched to the html. dunno why.

Doesn't really matter anymore though the way your server is set up can be important (some will not default to index.htm) but that is a minor issue.

I think la'dsasha has it right the original spec was for it to be .html since the web was built on UNIX platforms but for PC compatibility reasons it got shortened to .htm

I think it may have as much to do with 16 bit or 32 bit operating systems.
Win9x is a 32 bit environment and as such can/does use four letter file extensions (long file name), whereas 16 bit win 3.1 used to be restricted to the 8.3 DOS file system (eight characters for the file name and a three character extension).

I was just curious if Doc had been using some usual html editor at the time.
