I just visited the Ebay site, and saw that the top level of the collectible category was almost 57 megabytes big!! Needless to say, I did not wait for it to load <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/tongue.gif">

I guess it would be interesting to wait for it to load to see if the browser can even handle something like that...

Makes me wonder if I really need to worry when a page of mine gets over 100 kb like I do now... <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif">

I would worry. A lot.

People who go to eBay are generally willing to wait that long because they intend to save money on something.

People aren't going to wait that long for a personal site to load. Even 100k is far too large for one page...though I doubt that eBay's page is actually 57 megs. That alone would kill them in bandwidth. I'm certain their designers are better than that.

Yes, I was not really serious when I said I might not need to care about the size of the webpage.
Is 100k really way too much though?

I know when I started making webpages, that I definately wanted to stay under 50k, but that was many years ago, and with 56k modems being pretty much the slowes connection nowadays, I do feel that I can let my pages be up towards 100k. Is that too optimistic?
Of course it depends on the character of the page, and most pages never get nearly that big.

I just ran www.aftonbladet.se (one of the most visited pages in Sweden) through websitegarage, and it is almost 175kb in total. And that is still a news site, of the sort that you are supposed to visit every day.

Is it only a myth that too big pages scare people away? Of course if it is much too big that will be bad, but what it is like the Aftonbladet site? I don't surf as much now as I used to, but I must say that it is very rarely that I have left a page just because it was too big. If it is a page about somehting I think will be interesting, I will wait until it is loaded, even if it filled up with uncompressed pictures. Actually, it is much more common that I would leave a page because the server is slow. If I can see in the statusbar that a 100k picture is loading, I can accept that as long as I see that it is loading with a decent speed. But if it is a 25k image loading, and nothing seems to happen. The I will leave.

And the ebay page really was 57mb, or at least when I was going there. I waited for a while, and then it had only loaded 1%. Some other page there were like 2mb, so it is not like that was the only big page.

So, what are your upper "limits" when you make sites? (and I am sorry if this has been discussed around here many times before) <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

As a user of low (dial up) bandwith i say keep it as small as possible.
When a pic looks good at about 25kcompressed in JP, open the PSD again and try to compress it 10k still looking good? Compress some more too 2k. Ow pic is starting to look ugly? Try Compressing a bit less. Ok now you got a pic off 5k in stead off 25k. That is the smallest thing wich is still nice..
My site nowadays is about 10 pages.....and has some pics on it. Total size is about 750kb.... that is about 75k for each page.
Pretty nice i thought.

57MB????? as in Megabyte or 57Mb as in Megabit????
The MB variant is about 8 times as big as the MegaBit thing.
One byte =8 bit remember.....
Any way i doubt that ebay is about 57 MB big i even doubt the 57Mbit
because it loaded in 5.5 seconds on a 28k8 line...

It was that big, I swear!
But when I go back there now it is not any more, of course... instead there is some message directing me to another page. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/tongue.gif">
My browser said it was 57000k, and I think it really was. Or at least it took a while just to download 1% of it.

Of course I do what I can to make my pictures as small as possible, but I don't go as much hassle about it as I used to do. I remember working in psp3, and manually removing colours one by one in my gif-images, just to gain a few bytes.

This make me think of something else...
How much I feel I can compress an image when I save it depends on what resolution I use. I mean, when I use a nice high resolution I can compress it pretty much without it looking bad. But then when I open it in 600x800 it looks all crappy.
Of course a solution would be to work in 600x800, but I hate those low resolutions, and how it makes half my screen being filled up with menues. I now use 1024x768 as a sort of compromize when I make graphics for the web, but I secretly wish that people would stop using 600x800 all together, so I did not have to worry about it any more.
I know there are still many people that have so low a resolution judging from statistics from my sites, but I will be very happy when that is no longer the case. Why would anyone want to use that resolution anyway? Even in a 14" screen it seems too low...

So, how do you guys solve this dilemma? How do you overbridge the difference between the big fancy screen that I am sure you have, and the small old screens that your visitors will use? I do make sure that my pages will fit on a 600x800, but that still doesn't seem enough all the time when it comes to quality of pictures.

Oh dear... I do tend to get a bit rambly at times... And since I don't even have anything interesting or useful to say, I better stop!

You guys you can't really tell page weight and speed from your browser.

There are many things that can impact how fast a page loads You caould have 90% of the thing in your browser cache. Your ISPs could also be making judicious use of Proxy servers. (Local servers that cache pages) The images on these pages can be Akamaized (a system that caches media locally) (they are not but I am throwing out hypotheticals)

In other words there are a lot of things that can affect page speed other than page weight yet in the end it is the most important.

NetScape does display file size as it loads the files and I suspect (although he didn't say it) that ZOX saw "1% of 57,000kb read" in the status bar of his browser.

Yes, that is 57 mega bytes.

I found it again!!
Maybe it is not the real ebay but some strange subpage, since I got there through a search, and not via the main-page. Anyway, if you follow this link: http://cayman.ebay.com/aw/listings/completed/day9page1.html
and then click the "collectibles" in the top center. Tell me what you see? For me it says "0% of 56777K".

Glad to see I was not imagining things yesterday <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif">

well duh, just look at it...

that link contains 175,400 auctions or whatnot, taking up 56777k. that averages out to 3.09k per entry, makes perfect sense.

shame on you guys for trying to open a section that large... they do have a 'search' function and 'subcategories' for a reason.

<g> well, if the link is there to click on, I will click on it no matter what <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif">

I know it makes sense, considering the number of auctions, but I wonder why on earth they would even keep a page like that? I am sure it is just a dynamic page that is populated from a database, and that they did not know when they made it that it would be this big, but still...

Just imagine browsing through 175,000 items...

Yo ZOX. A resolution discussion took place here not long ago (in Rancid years). 800x600 is the recommended design format for a variety of reasons. Remember, if you are not designing for the web visitor, hang it on your bedroom wall. -Just a comment from the witless.

I get so confused so often. All my life, I've heard that size matters. Now that I've raised my sights, the matter is just the opposite. Is this too deep?

Now... which one is the 4:20 pm pill...?
