Preserved Topic: Can you convert a .bmp image to a gif image? (Page 1 of 1)

Hi,

I'm in the Site Fights and have been building my spirit page and noticed almost all of the images that save to my hard drive are .bmp images. My server doesn't allow me to upload .bmp files, only .jpeg, .jpg, and .gif... How can I convert .bmp images into .gif images?

ok.. presuming your using adobe PS...

open your image... then go to your top menu bar....
FILE--->SAVE AS A COPY---->

under the file name option box...
there will be a option box 'save as' where you can select 'compuserve gif' and you should be all set....

Yah Jpeg is Mac the other isnt, and then theres the E situation.

Windows deserves a three letter extension. Everyone else gets plenty.

It's funny...since I always want to give Microsoft a few four letter extensions.

To be correct the .JPG extension is a Dos thing. because whole the world did understand an .JPEG file except for MS-DOS (thanks Bill..)
Who had files in an 8.3 format. Eight characters for the dot three characters as extension.

Ok Now convert it:
If you have not PS then you could use Paintshoppro to do the same thing. If that is not there too. You better download an converter program

Graphic Workshop is a good choice.

Let's be clear on one thing:
Macs don't need a file suffix. Our file system is such that every Mac file is 2 parts: a data fork and a resource fork. In the resource fork is the icon and file creator info, so the machine know which app to launch when a file icon is double clicked. Extentions such as .jpg don't hurt anything, but they aren't needed in a mac to mac workflow. I save all my files with the 3 character extention because most of my customers use PCs (and I assume UNIX does too which is why internet files need extentions).

So .jpg is the DOS suffix, limited to 3 charactrs. "JPEG" the acronym stands for "Joint Photographic Experts Group" or something similar, an organization I have for some reason never been invited to join. Might have something to do with the "expert" part, eh?

Our file system? You have been assimilated. Fork that. I just wanna Mac! I can almost smell apples when I wake up it's scary. I use apple-smelly shampoo and conditioner, I eat an apple a day, and I subscribe to Aussie Mac World, although I'm yet to actually experience a Mac in real life. I just want funky forked four letter file names. I want OSX. Anybody running the beta thingy ?

FYI, you can also convert to gif from the bitmap file menu. file>> save as>> compuserve gif. But some times it just screws the colors up. PS rules!!!

if your converting to a gif try this

palette=optimized octree
reduction method=nearest color

you could try websafe palette, but usually it just messes the pic up.
