My school is thinking of having Tom Green speak. That kind of got me thinking. I find his stuff on TV pretty funny, but do I really want that guy at my college? RIT is also the site of the NTID, the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. I don't want to think of what he might do to the deaf kids here (auditoriums are usually 1/4 deaf students).

What do you guys think?

Wow, I live in Rochester too... I just go to school on Long Island...

I am sure he will not hurt them, and it is all in good fun.

Hmm... I plan on applying to RIT... It's not my first choice, but if I go, I'll have to find you and say hi or something.

I dunno if I'd want someone to sign for Tom Green, can you imagine what some of the interepertaions would be? It'd be my bet that he'd get a few hand signs back.

I wouldn't worry about Tom Green speaking, those who come should be made aware that he's a comdeian.

Deaf or not, if you didn't know who he was there would be no reason to see him speak.

Eh, whats the actual point of having him speak? Is he supposed to be the roll model or person these college graduates should be measuring up to? I really don't like him or his show all that much. I don't really find that sort of humor funny. Thats just me though ...

Hey WarMage, ya goto Stony Brook? Do you like it there? I have some friends that say the school is great but besides that it sucks. I was actually accepted to Stony Brook, New Paltz, Binghampton, and Genoseo(sp?) today. Weird how all the SUNY schools decision comes the same day.

Stony Brook is great academically.

If you go there for their computer science program you will be taught Java. Which is an excellent language. It works great for servlets. I have only been at SB for 2 semesters. But I have liked it.

It is like any place, good people and bad, there are tons of frats, if you are into that thing, there are tons of good looking girls, as well as good looking guys there (depending on preference) but I would recommend an HIV test before doing anything with most of them.

As in any social atmosphere, you have to take charge and do the things you like to do. If you choose to sit in your room and code all day, well noone is going to pester or stop you. They probabally won't even pay attention to you. If you choose to be outgoing and to hang out with lots of people you can do that too.

The school has a lot of drugs, but the peer presure element is not there, if you choose to do drugs and drink you will not have a problem finding like minded people, if you choose not to do drugs you will find people who also choose not to do drugs.

It is a large school, but it thins out on weekends. Most people are commuters, and even if they are there during the week they leave on the weekends.

My tipical week involves going to 16 hours work of classes, spending at least 20 hours coding for java, 2 hours doing other homework (hence 1.96 gpa), and another 20 hours doing web related work. The rest of the time is spent hanging out with people (there is hardly ever less than 4 people in my room, even when I am sleeping).

I recommend going and visiting the school. You said you have friends there, spend a weekend with them, and see what it is like. Stop down friday morning see the whole campus scene, and then spend a night there for the party scene. I liked the school the first time I saw it.

And classes, they are hard, spend time doing them or they will eat you alive, it is not HS anymore, it is a University, and you need to put time into your studies, if you do you will come out knowing a lot more than you went in knowing.

If you are looking to go to school for web developement stony brook is not the place to go. I have learned a ton about web developement at stony brook. My roomate runs a site that gets 7000 uniques a day, and my good friends both do extensive work in web developement. So you won't lack people who would work and learn the stuff with you.

RIT is a dry campus, and for the most part, it's not drug-ful.

Right now I'm in my second quarter of college as a freshman, and I'm planning on getting a BS of BA in MIS, and an MBA.

Something special you might find about RIT is the quarter system. We are one of like 20 or 30 private colleges in the US that still use the quarter system. In a nutshell, we graduate with 50% more classes taken than the average semester student. It's great for getting your MBA in only 5 years of college.

Anyways, Slimey, since you showed an interest, feel free to ask whatever you want. I'll probably answer any questions.

Thanks for the info WarMage, I visited SB a few times. I also spent the night there twice. From what I hear the school is great. My dad has a few employees from there and they all seemed to like it. The campus kinda sucks though. Theres nothing to rave about there. I liked New Paltz campus the most out of all the SUNY schools but it ranks a little bit lower then Binghampton. My parents are pushing for a private school but I hate private schools. I don't have a clue what I REALLY wanna go for so I might just goto New Paltz for the first two years and then transfer depending on what I want. My parents said they would buy me a house close by to NP or Binghampton if I wanted because Im a neat freak and bug out when something is messy.

I also applied to RIT but still no word I liked that school ...

My RA who is in Comp Science went to New Paltz, and he said it was an awsome party school, but at the same time it lacked in the computer science field.

When coming to SB as a junior he was taking freshman level classes because the ones at NP didn't compare.

I don't know about Binghamton, the GF says it is up there with Geneseo as far as quality, but she is a Bio Chemist and not into the computers.

Well Binghampton is rated SUNYs top school and one of the best in the country. If I went to NP I doubt I would be going for computer science. I like it but I don't know (at least for now) if I want to do that for the rest of my life. I really didnt like Binghamptons campus though and I dont know if i could live there for 4 years.

Hey, I went to Stony Brook for a year as an exchange student. I like the school well enough. The campus is perhaps not the most stimulating in the world. The library is one of the ugliest buildings I have seen.

I found the classes very easy, and was amazed how little time each week I had to spend in class. But then I was not taking classes in computer science, and I am comparing to the University here in Sweden which seems to be a bit more high-paced.

When I was leaving the school they were just beginning to build a big computer center, for which some chinese business man had spent miliions and millions of dollars. Did that ever happen?

There seemed to be a much activities at campus with performances /movies and such, but the area around the school seemed pretty dead as far as entertainment goes.
If you get there I suggest you take contact with PCM (protestant campus ministry) which is one of the friendliest group of people I have met. I doubt it still exist though, as it was on the verge of extinction when I was there.

Actually, ratdoodoo, if you could just tell me real quick, is an interview required to apply? Or, was it required for you? 'Cause I haven't had one yet, and the deadline's coming up.

No, there was no interview required. I visited during an open house 2 years ago and got a casual interview. But that's only for RIT's college of business. Which college did you apply to? What are your plans for a major (if any)?
