i used to have Win98 and whenever i put a cd in it would read the autorun file(on the cd) and start the program. Now i have winME and it doesn't autostart and i can't figure where to turn it on. Would having a burner as the cd-drive make any differece?

Ok, here's the best way to fix your problem:

- Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel
- Double click Add/Remove Programs
- Select "Uninstall Windows Millennium" and click Add/Remove <- Hahaha!
- Click Yes
- Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for Windows Me to uninstall

No, really. I hate Windows Me.

Actually, JakeB, I've had the same problem on my new-ish computer with Win '98.

Man, I love windows me. It's fast, extremely stable (hasn't crashed yet), and has pretty good customization. I haven't found much if anything wrong with it. *shrugs*

i don't like winME, but it came on here and i haven't had time to change it yet. But is the autorun problem because of ME or because of the burnerdrive? if its just ME, i might be able to make a program to do the autorun.

System Properties (either through Control Panel or by right-clicking on My Computer), click on the Device Manager tab, find and highlight your CD drive and click on the Properties button, click on the Settings tab, then place a check in the box titled "Auto insert notification"

JakeB, you mentioned that you have a CD recorder, right? Then, even if you enable "Auto insert notification", the CD recording program will turn it off, because it can't work with that option enabled (almost all CD recording programs can't work with that option enabled).

Haha, what an asshole I am. Ass/Remove? Sorry about that post. My friend came to the door while I was typing it with Green Day tickets. I was in a hurry. Forget all that shit I said. I was in an altered state of mind. I have no idea how to fix your problem. I hope you figure it out. I can't stand Windows Me. I hate it. I want to get rid of it. It is evil, evil, evil. Give me 95... Just for the love of God keep Me away from me!

Ass/Remove... Haha, and the thing is, I remember when I was typing it thinking "Damn, who's at my door? Oops, almost typed "Ass" there. I better make sure I don't make that mistake again!" Then I promptly typed what you see now. Actually, I think I'm gonna change that. Oh, and Green Day was very, very, very good.

You can always start in DOS mode using startup floppy disk...

okay people, here's my rant on WinME

I use my gf's computer mostly because she has an Athlon-950 and I have a K6-II 400, nuff said.

She has a gateway running WinME. I also use a cd burner (a creative labs one) as my primary drive and it has no problems autorunning cd's.

In this case, I doubt that it's WinME that's giving you problems.

However, I wish I could swim across the lake right and kick Bill Gates in the balls for WinME. Basically, it's targeted at the lowest common denominator.

They should put a sticker on the side saying: "Suitable for ages 3 - 9"

I'm serious. It won't let you use anything other than default device drivers without putting up a fuss. It's a pain to customize the pc in any way. The new system information program has a web based interface (that means not only is it less functional, it's also four times slower, yay).

Oh, and one last stab at its cold, dark heart: it is SLOW.

It is VERY SLOW. The reason being it does a lot of behind the scenes stuff. Makes it easier if you don't know or care what's going on back there, but a big pain if you do and you'd rather sacrifice a full disk backup every 20 mins for a little bit more speed.

Go with Win2k. Trust me on this. It is way more stable, and since it supports Directx8 you shouldn't have a problem with games and such. It also runs photoshop very well and can handle multiple processors (due to the underlying Win NT kernel).

Whew. Okay, i'm done.

I dunno. I just don't like it. I mean, it's nice and polite to me I guess... I dislike it for many of the reasons silence listed. I run a way low-end machine, and Me eats up a ton of my system resources, much more than 95 ever did. It's way more stable than 95 (thank God) and a lot more predictable, but it's slloooww on my poor little computer. It also seems like there's a lil tiny memory leak in it... After a few days I tried going back to 95, but then I caught hell trying to get my DSL to work right every time I booted up. Screw that. So it's back to Me for now. I distrust Windows 2000 for the same reasons. System hog (or so I hear) and leaky. I'm getting a new box soon, and you can be sure it will be running on 98. I want a Mac. *sigh*
