I'm sort of a film fanatic. Although my selections for American films to be seen in theaters has gone down the drain since being in Japan, it doesn't bother me all that much. Although I don't enjoy much of the Japanese variety.... I do get into a lot of other foriegn films.
 Anyway, my question/survey.....

What's your favorite flick?... and a brief "why"....

I can never pick one favorite but here are a couple of them...
The Crow: The imagery and the storyline.

The Cell: The imagery is amazing. Especially in the dream sequences.

Great Expectations: The story and the whole feel of the movie. Like it a lot. (Gwenyth Paltrow helps too.)

Gladiator: No explanation here. Combo of fighting and a good plot. Can't miss.

Monty Python's Holy Grail: Well, does this need explanation. Can quote the movie line for line. How sad.

      Not in any order:
The Crow: the comic is better, but the movie did a good job. good choice krets...

 Pulp Fiction: don't ask why

Lock, Stock, and two smoking barrels: i can't get enough of this movie...

 Mad Max: !

Desperado: Salma Hyek and Antonio Banderas in the same movie, it doesn't get much better. sorry it's just my favorite take off on El Mariachi (good movie as well, $7000 bucks to make, robert rodriquez rules)

The Excorcist: who's gonna argue that? best horror movie...

The Cell: Amazing computer art...another tip of the hat to krets...

 Akira: best anime, story, animation

Princess Mononoke: tied for best anime, great story, great animation

Fight Club: just a fun loving movie, everyone rips on it for being all about the fights and gore, not many take a deeper look (read the book)

Duck Soup: for that matter any of the Marx brothers movies...greatest comedians of all time...no contest...

Monty Python's Meaning of Life: and the holy grail but i wanted to be original...

The Nightmare Before Christmas: tim burton is the stop motion god...

Ace Ventura: best jim carry movie...

The Fifth Element: cool story, cool costumes, Milla Jovovich is hot, very bladerunnerish scenes (i'd put bladerunner in my list but it did a horrible job of retelling Do androids dream of electric sheep?)

 The Matrix: good stuff...

i could go on forever...was this just supposed to be one movie?...just wait until i have my movie collection in front of me...

Naming just one is next to impossible but if I had to:
 Twelve Monkeys

Bruce Willis' character is incredibly credibly human.
Brad Pitt's insanity provides an awesome diversion from all the insanity.
It's dark and twisted with the hope of something more that almost was.

(I've got no idea how to spell those berries in english. Krets, help me out
  )
One good obscure film is Jake and his women.
Alan Alda as a writer who keeps having conversations with the women of his life.
Trouble is that some of 'em is only present in his own mind....

Which brings me to "MASH" the movie of course.

oh, and of course a bunch of above mentioned scifi, anime and action stuff...

<edit> had to add "The Killer". John Woo, need I say more</edit>

Withnail and I... the funniest film ever. It actually gets funnier the more you watch it.
Two out of work alcoholic actors living in swinging 60's London decide to 'take a holiday' in one of their gay uncle's remote country cottages...

 My favourite line

"Are you the farmer ?... excuse me, are you the farmer ?"
 "Stop fu**ing saying that Withnail, of course he's the fu**ing farmer.. he's on a fu**ing tractor !"

My joint favourite is (and I cannot spell the name properly).. Koyanamstachi. No characters, no dialogue, just a collage of moving images that tells the story of human creation and our ultimate death. It also has a beautiful soundtrack by Philip Glass. A must see for any of the resident asylum stoners..

 It's a classic IMHO.

 Also:

 Forrest Gump
 Gladiator
Iron Monkey (I now have the DVD...woohoo!)
 Ninja Scroll
The Mummy (the DVD is awesome)
 The Matrix
The Legend (old Jet Li flick)
 Aliens
 The Usual Suspects

Last year I had the honor of attending a talk given here at my school by Chris McQuarrie (the writer of The Usual Suspects). He talked about the movie and working with Bryan Singer. He also showed Stephen Baldwin's screen test and a screen test of the interview scene.

It was one of the coolest experiences i've ever had.

The Matrix: the most visually stunning and stylized American film of the last decade
Fist of Legend: Jet Li rocks
The Usual Suspects: amazing story-telling with one of the best endings EVER
Remember the Titans: overall the most quality film I've seen in a looong time, plus I'm a sucker for sports flicks

Akira - Weird Ass movie, never quite got the ending, didn't make sense, but then again, neither did the end of Neon Genesis, Evangelion.
One major set of movies that nearly everyone has forgotten to mention: Star Wars I, IV, V and VI - Need I tell you why?

Fight Club - Twisted storyline...I love it!

Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, The Life of Brian and Search for the Holy Grail - Monty! Python! What can I say, sick and twisted humour!

'And Saint Attilla raised the handgrenade up on high saying "Oh Lord, Bless this thy Hand Grenade thou mayest blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy", and the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the Sloths and Anchovies and Orangutans and Breakfast Cereals and Fruit Bats and...'

 'Skip a bit brother.'

'Er...Ah...Oh! Right. Then the Lord Spake saying "First shalt thou pull out the Holy Pin, then Shalt Thou count to three, no more, no Less. Three is the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then procede onto three. Five is right out. One the number three, being the third number, is reached, Lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade Of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it." '

 Aaaaaaahhhh...Python.

 My favorite movies:
-The cell : awesome. My eyes poped out of my head when i see this one.
-Se7ven: inspired me for a novella or two...
rocking, nasty, gloomy! -Green mile: in spite of everything that has been said on this film, I think it's the best movie adaptation from a book of king. Mysery and Dolores Clairborne was a really good one too.
 -Dogma: laugh to death!
-Le diner de con: a french one, don't know if anyone know this one!
-Un air de famille: another one, a great one, sure!
-The Straight Story(Lynch): i cried on this one, really.
-The ninth gate: hey, no one seen this one? A really good esoteric story!
-Willow: best fantasy movie ever (with conan!)
 -Legend:hu... second best fantasy movie.
-Lors of illusion: a REALLY good film from clive barker; never been in theater in france because it didn't hit american public enough...

 So... there.
 Back to work!
