Go with number 4 and change the blue into red... If you want to have it looking happy-like (yeah, whatever) I'd use warm colors like red and yellow (and everything in between, like orange, maybe pink) and stay away from green and blue.

another option is using pastel colors (colors with much white added to it)

I say number 4 and go with pastels.

IMHO dark leans toward depression and unhappy *dark* thoughts.

Bright and soft pastels lean to the happy thoughts.

I would recommend you go to your local library and pick up a book on the psycology of color. Make sure that it is heavy on examples, and associations.

This is a good idea for any one involved in web design. If you know what colors make people think what, you will be further ahead in the game of provoking reaction, and getting products sold.

This forum is a great place to look to for the power of color.

Earth tones, while here I am sure you feel as if you are achomplishing something, maybe even building something. Even though it seems to be a dark site, I don't feel depression while looking at it. It is more of a possitive work enviorment.

color. this is something i feel i am smart enough to answer questions about.

happy? happy is often equated with serenity, which is improper; pastels, for example, are not happy colors. they are muted, desaturated, calm colors. for example, here is a good combination of rich, inspiring, spring-like colors.

a good note is that when dealing with large amounts of white space, you're inciting "stark" attitudes--i.e., not happy. stay away from those if you want to inspire happiness.

in terms of colors outside of that combo i directed you to, i suggest strong, highly saturated colors of red and blue, first off. it is a challenge to not put too much orange and yellow in with those--those are fiery, angry, and active rather than happy--and stick to full color, all over the freaking place.

those are all good starts, i agree that #4 is the closest.

OK, here's one psychological trick you can play to make virtually anyone look happier, a nicer person, warm and cuddly. They did this psychology experiment where they gave a random group of head shots of people to these test subjects and asked them, "which one of these person would you like to hang out with?" Now, all of these people had been photographed in bright light, these pupils were small, but! They also created a different series of the same pics, manipulated so they had big old "puppy dog" pupils, and then they mixed them up with the other pics. The results were hugely skewed in favor of the people with big pupils, everybody thought they were much nicer people, trusted, happy, secure in themselves, etc... I'm going to find a pic of somebody here on my hard drive and do an example of this, it's pretty subtel, but striking the effect.
