Heh. I just heard about this one, the front page for the OZONE is up for discussion on the subject of "new" navigation techniques, good or bad? It'll probably be good for my traffic, but it ain't easy hearing all these folks who've never created anything slam my baby, don't they realize? It's *supposed* to be confusing and surreal? Let's see somebody else link to about 200 pages with one nav bar, I ask ya! Heh. Just blowing off steam, it's kind of ironic that's it's the example for "new" navbars, silly really.

This front page is the best i´ve ever seen, but this is not up for discussion, its belong to another world, and that world should be populated for people like the people found in the asylum. i didn´t read the critics (good or bad, don´t know) but is like Doc´s says: "it ain't easy hearing all these folks who've never created anything slam my baby"

Heh, gotta love it. You'd think someone in the thread might actually acknowledge that Doc's not an e-com site or an informational portal (well, I guess it is of sorts, but I digress) so it's not exactly intended to be a straightforward don't think navigation, but I doubt it Can't wait to see some of the "new" innovative techniques that folks are showing there as alternatives...

I love that comment about the bars being "useless". In a way, Doc, this only confirms how cool your site actually is. If the feckless hordes "got it", I don't think you would sleep well at night, dig?

heh

IMHO this should probably fit well into the philosophy forum.
That page is a work of art, and who is to say whats wrong or right in the work of art?

And furthermore - If desigenrs should not try out new things, then who would drive the new ways of communication on the web???

I'm trying to get my company to set up a public server which presents the same data as our corp site or at least some of it, but in several new experimental ways of communication (kind of a "we don not know if everything will work ot fine, but we aretrying different stuff"). That just too keep from the monotony, and show our customers that we are trying and caring about how web communication can be transferred, rather than sticking to the general template 1a.

Probably won't happen, considering the size of the site, and the "stiffness of our company, but I still think it would be a fun idea......

I say GO DOC!!

the biggest slam was from the idiot talking abiout flash and shockwave.

whatever

people with intelligence and an eye for design know tha value of an entrance like Ozones.

I'm with DL and Fig. I thought all in all the dinky paragraph was pretty positive, and yes - they seemed a tad confused by the design intentions of a sophisticated personal expression and the needs for dumbed-down commerce sites.

You go Doc. Great visibility. Only thing I found upsetting (besides the image of anyone getting dizzy from the page!) was their implicaton that this was something new, when we all know you've been getting whined at for months at the Asylum for not having anything newer!

I will say that, after reading the bone head comments posted, I think Shiiizzzam made the right call not getting involved in the discussion!

Heh. I also went and joined the network, got the OK to post, and... didn't. What can I say? For the most part, the moderator seems like anice enough girl, and positive. The first two comments posted though, all started razzing me about confusions and usability issues, what do they think this is, CNET? <g>

I figure this will probably just do great things for my traffic, and after a few days I'll finally post there, ignore anything bad, and simply start lecturing them about the art of interface design in a very general way. (You know I can ramble on and on about things like this, eh?) It's just a big group of people, and since they still use CNET as their "window to the world", I can only assume that most of them are new to the net, heh.

For those of you who desire more exposure/traffic, this might be a great place to submit your sites for possible inclusion? This could be a big jump-start for a newish site, if mentioned.

Ooh! Just got my first report of stats for the 26th. Check this out...

Average traffic:

  • Visitors: 4,096
  • # of Hits: 250,101
  • Page views: 28,405
  • Bandwidth: 1.17 Gigs/day

Post-CNET:

  • Visitors: 6,282
  • # of Hits: 703,423
  • Page views: 76,361
  • Bandwidth: 2.89 Gigs/day

Whoo-DOGGY! Them's a lot of hits. The extra 2000 visitors wasn't so much of a surprise, but it looks like they all spent a lot of time surfing around, too. Maybe I should give VISI a call and apologize for the extra traffic? They can handle it, but the surprise factor might not be a good thing, heh.

Gotta love those surprise jumps in traffic! Of course, even my spikes don't get anywhere near your slow days, Doc.

Congrats on the CNET mention. Too bad most people don't seem to be getting the intent of the site, but I guess people just aren't used to art on the Web.

I just don't get this obsession with everything having to have a purpose...

That article really didnt seem all that negative to me... at least nothing to get riled up over. it seemed more of a "mention" of your site than anything else. Each person likes different things, You can't really blame her for not liking yours In fact, in honestly I dont care for most of the interfaces on Ozones either (and of course there are some Iabsolutely love). Just personal preference... and if anything it would have been nice for her to reiterate that fact. I dont really see too much of what she said as terribly negative though.

well, i think this whole debate revolves around the lack of good, hearty pear-eating here in the world. yes, i could bring someone to tears based on a critique of a web site, but what does that mean if there are no pears around to be eaten?

seriously, what about the pears?

I honestly don't see why everyone seems to hostile against people criticizing Doc. I my opinion, criticism is good; it gives you suggestions on how to make things better, or if not, at least perspectives that might be different from your own. And even if we don't agree on their criticism, there is no reason to call them stupid, etc. About Doc's front page, well, Doc said "It's *supposed* to be confusing and surreal". True, that is what makes it cool and interesting, but not everyone knows that is the purpose. After all, a web site leaves people with certain impressions, whether those are the intended ones or not. That is the (sometimes) bitter truth!

I honestly have no problem with others opinions...but it's easier to swallow when it comes from someone that knows at least as much as you do on the subject

If I post a graphic here and Doc or twitch or DL, DG, F1 or Wead etc give me crap or praise for how it was done or turned out...then I respect that...they are awesome at what they do and I respect their opinion but if I see some newby here that can't draw a circle jumps me over it then nope I just don't swallow that too well.... IMHO
