anyone in this forum restore trucks or cars as a hobby?

I'm thinking about buying a 69' Chevy Pickup to restore.

My dad has a '36 Dodge panel truck that he's working on.

All it is right now is the body. No engine, tranny, nothing. He's working on getting it primed so it doesn't rust anymore than it already has.

he obviously lives up north....

here in Houston rust is virtually non-existent

I've got my eye on a 63 nova 2 SS ragtop, but the owner just leaves it parked...won't sell it.

I think my goal is a truck, black primered, chrome rims, wide tires, slightly souped up engine and tranny, black tinted windows.

I want a big cam in it ....I love the sound of v-8's with big cams....maybe I'll put some Flowmasters on it too...

I've done this a few times, I was a mechanic and body worker for a while when I got out of high-school, I like old cars and trucks. Funny, I used to have an old 1970 Chevy One Ton, it was a *beast*, huge as a house, rusty as heel, parts falling off but it simply would never ever die! It was past restoring, but I can see that era as a candidate. (Heh. This thing appeared made of rust, as I said, and it was originally rust colored paint, heh. Every spring I'd park it in the lot and walk around hitting it with a three pound sledge hammer, the rust would just fall and fall, it's leave an imprint of the truck after. Then I'd prime it up and I'd be good for another season!) Still, after all this, that metal was thicker and stronger than any of the little rice burners buzzing around under my 16.5" tires, hah!

(The rust monster was retired to a farm in upstate Minnesota, where it still halls logs around this guys property, and probably will for many years to come! Happy ending. )

I have an assortment of vehicles strewn about the country. My Current toy is a 70' Bronco 4x4 thats a bit lifted with 35" mudtires for play, I also drive a 90' Eclipse turbo with a larger than stock turbo with some porting and polishing, exhaust, etc. Of the many non-running vehicles I own are a 1978 280z thats in my garage now that will someday soon have a LS-1 turbocharged engine in it. I have some old project VW's I picked up over the years stored at a family members farm, a 66' bug, a 62' 23-window bus, a 57' ghia convertable and a 80' Scriocco-S, they will all see the light of day eventually, or thats what I tell myself.

I know a guy who used to have a '65 Plymouth souped up beyond belief. He could get the front end off the ground from a stop if he punched it hard enough.

he's got a 67 Mustang GT 350 Cobra .

My project car was my first a 67 VW bug 2 inches off the from porsche rims, no chrome and one-piece front windows. Went through 2 motors before I found out that in previous hands someone had gotten in an accident and the whole engine compartment was moved 2 inches forward which was fucking up the air cooling.

Are you talking about run of the mill Kragen/Grand Auto Oil Filter and Wiper blades type parts or something for custom/car specific hard to find stuff?
