I am all for open source, but, I think that games need to be close source.

If we were to publish the source it would distract from the game. How could we put in fun little easer eggs if people could find them by simply looking at the code. How could we hid secret weapons or armor, the code would tell it all.

I am not against openning the source code up to some of the basic engines, but as for important game information, I would feel it a bad idea.

I like Open Source, the concept is totally rocking, and it's not always exactly what people think it is. Open Source does not mean public domain, the original author still owns the original and primal version. Anyone anywhere can take it apart and do all sorts of crazy things to it. If you do something truly special to it, you send the mods back to the author and they get incorporated into the next release. This can really really work, it's been the lynchpin of the whole Unix world.

I have nothing against releasing all of the engines. I think releasing the engines would be a wonderful idea. But I do believe that releasing the game secrets could be a bad thing.

treasurechest[0].location = "0,23,54";
treasurechest[0].property = "super secret weapon";

This type of information is the info that I think should be hidden. If this information is freely available it makes it far to easy for even the absent minded to understand where all the cool things are located.

I love open source, but I also know that given an easy chance to find out where the best weapon is, where all the power is located, many people will go for it, and use that. They like to win, and will do whatever they can to win.

Open up all the engines, but I think that objectlocations.class, NPC.class and levelmaps.class should not be released. Engine3d.class and TextureGenerator.class as well as other powerful tool classes such as the basic character engine, or the basic map engine, or the basic object engine, these should all be open sourced. Yet the ones that could possibly cause the game to be less fun, those should not be released.

If the crackers want to crack they can, but I would want them to have to spend time doing it. If they want to put the time into ruining the level of fun in the game that is their business, but I don't think it should be made freely available to all those who use it.

I prefer Rogue Spear ... I've always perfered 3D FPS games where you're not confined to small spaces, large open spaces kick ass IMO. But i liked Unreal better for it's AI

But I do have a question about the 3D Java stuff. Java 3D would have to be all software based wouldn't it? So having a spiffy 3D wouldn't help at all now would it. If so, won't there be some heft limitations on the overall polly count you can pump into these games. And if your planning on running them full screen will the Java apps be able to support inderpendant (sp?) resolutions other then the current screen resolution?

I've been wondering about this since the start of this post and figured now was as good as any a time to ask, no?

UT has some big open maps! You're right, they're a blast. Hall of Giants comes to mind.. and Lava Giant, those are a couple of my regular stops. The thing about big maps in UT is they tend to become sniper fests so planning on spending some time might be a good idea, especially on-line.. people tend to be somewhat smarter than the bots.

The other thing I wondered about with the java apps is sound.. sound is paramount in these games. Gotta be able to hear footsteps, rockets launching, team commands, taunts etc.. in stereo (at least) of course. Can java handle all that?

Yeah good point, sound is really important but I already know Java can handle sound, I plaved arounds with applets back in 99 and they could then.

But if you need someone to help out with the music I'll gladly help I haven't really done any sound effect work before but I've done a lot of DJ work and have been playing around with a few audio application to make my own music. I also live with a Music Technology student and she's got Synth's, Amp,s and stupid ammounts of audio hardware they I have access too if need be. Well as long as I'm living here that is, but sharehousing's cheap so I don't think I'll be going anywhere soon....

"YOU MUST HAVE GL4J installed before using this. Otherwise, it could crash. It is a slightly modified version of an Applet released by Anfy3d makers. http://www7.ewebcity.com/brundlefly/envmap_hw.html"

GL4J has no Mac verson? I was gonna try it... ah well, nobody uses Mac these days, looks like they've seen the light.
