Hello to all. I've been a fan of this site for a very long time now and have been "trolling" around for an extended period of time. Now to my silly question:

I have been doing Multimedia work for the past 5 or so years mainly in Director (CD-ROMs mostly) and love to do HTML. I have just started to really use Flash, and I am starting to teach myself DHTML. The problem is this.....I want to learn EVERYTHING. I really love this stuff and the more I see that is out there, the more I want to learn. I was so happy when Director started to support dot-syntax that I went on to start learning Java-Scripting. Then, they put in really cool ActionScripting in Flash - Got to learn that. Then I saw this really neat site that used PHP - want to know that, then there is the slew of other stuff that I find so interesting, DHTML, WAP, CGI, ASP, CFML, XML, the list goes on and on and on.....

So to make a long question short (too late):
Is it possible to learn too much? Is my brain going to explode? Should I just stick with what I know well and just an "understanding" of the rest? Is it bad to ask to many questions in your first post? Will I ever get more sleep?

That is all for now, and thanks for this site. I have found many a useful link and laughter when needed.

Welcome Milkman

I know exactly how you feel. I've been running around like a chicken without a head for the last year and a half trying to soak everything in myself. Just don't do what I have been doing. I've been learning enough of each thing to fulfill my needs at the time (with a great deal of help from the good people here I might add) and then moving on to the next new thing. The problem is, when I need to go back to something I have done before, I have to give myself a little refresher course, which makes me realise that I didn't really learn it very well in the first place.

Anyway... enjoy your stay, and have fun. If you want to learn it, this place has all the talented, helpful people you'll ever need to help you.

Hi Milkman! Yes, your brain very likely will explode, just not right away. Most of us have come to rely on "Duct Tape?", the magic fiber that binds the universe together, this allows us to contain all the silly new technologies created. Seriously though, you don't need to learn *everything* about everything, just a whole heckuva lot about everything, a much more attainable goal. Stick around, you are in the right place, and strangely enough the more you learn, the easier the next thing becomes. So many of the languages have nearly identical syntax, and once you know something *can* be done, all you need is the right way of phrasing it. Think of it like a D&D roleplaying game, and you're a wizard who has to say his spells properly. New spells can be created at any time, that's what makes for the real wizards.<grin> Welcome!

I think I know what you mean, Milkman. Sometimes my mind can see all the things it wants to do and I get all excited and worked up about all the stuff to learn and create...

then I have to take a breath, slow down, take a deep breath and pick *one* thing to actually focus on until it's done.

Do you get my point? Both modes are perfectly valid but dreaming and brainstorming don't produce anything and if you try to produce something without a dream, good luck.

FWIW.

I'm afraid that I suffer from the same affliction as Milkman. I've been deeply involved with HTML and graphic design for over six years now, during all this time I haven't bothered to learn any new graphic programs or languages, only building an excellent but limited portfolio with what I had initially learned. I've known about Ozone for a few good years, and now I am just starting to use it again. I suggest that you read my first post in order to realize the full breadth of my problem. I am now getting into Photoshop and Illustrator using a slew of tutorial pages (Doc and Phong included). Any other handy Photoshop/Illustrator tutorial resource suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Keep in mind that I am quite biased (I love Altamira Composer), it might take me some time to appreciate these foreign programs. I am also learning ASP (VBScript) as well as occasionally dabbling in DHTML and Flash, I am making good progress, but I feel overwhelmed by all the new languages that are popping-up. I guess that I'll just have to take a deep breath and slowly learn them, one at a time.

Anything further suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Rattula

Rattula, my suggestion would be to forget about ASP, because Visual Basic is very evil programming language.

Learn PHP and/or PERL instead...

Max is right PERL is the way to go, If you really want to do ASP well then
I can not be responsible for the certain " not pretty outcome "
