Has html always been turned off in this forum, or is something that happened resent?

HTML has been turned off for quite some time...

what exactly was it's purpose? With UBB you can just about do everything needed

well... I'm not real sure about this... but one guess I have is that with certain types of boards you don't have certain UBB codes for things.
For instance, here, there aren't any UBB codes for flash movies.... therefore, in order to post a Flash movie on this board, you have to embed the movie with html instead.
The html is turned off in all forums except for the Sig Forum and the Multimedia forum I believe.

...like I said... I'm guessing.

HTML turned on would definitely cause mess. A malicious user (we don't have those) could insert JavaScript such as redirecting to another page or popup windows...

Also, we wouldn't be able to post HTML code examples if HTML was allowed...

well.... there ya have it.

Max has the right of it, that's the main reason for no HTML. We'd get bunches of posts like this...

And that would be the end of this thread, since the taqble displaying it would be ended, and nothing else would display, except for a bunch of messed up garbage if we were lucky. The Multimedia forum has HTML turned ON, primarily for flash bits to be inserted.

Hah, if I remember correctly, I was selected as the first (or second? first, i think) Mad Scientist (not sure if they were called that back then) because I fixed an error much like the one that Doc described.

Heh, and there was one point where we had this thread in the sig forum, and we found ways to put JavaScript into our HTML, and we messed up the entire thread's colors and images and everything, it was fun. =) Then doc found it and it froze up his computer, and that was the end of that, hah!

Sorry to bring this thread back, but ack! I jsut noticed HTML was ON, but it isn't now as far as I can see. Did it just come on to so Doc could fix or add something??

Hey Dark! Hmm, that might have depended which forum you were in! I've got HTML turned "on" in the multimedia/animation forum, so that folks could post SWF files and such. That must've been where you saw that, I don't believe it's on anywhere else.

mind you, if you are that way inclined i suppose it would not be too hard to use UBB for malicious purposes ?
