Steve, I believe Otaku is referring to the fact that these machines are geek-mobiles and no guy tooling around on one would ever hope to pick up a chick who hasn't been in a coma for the past twenty years.

Everyone here at work also had a good laugh about them making people lazier. But, let me ask you: ever walked 10 blocks in Manhattan? I'd say riding one of these things is a better alternative than spending good cash every day on a cab or battling with the subway. Not to mention the environmental impact.

As for looking dorky, it's no worse than seeing a grown man in a suit riding one of those stupid Razor scooters.

While we're at it, "Otaku" is not the right username if you're going to accuse others of excessive geekiness... shouldn't it be "TooOldForCartoonsMan" or something? (And yes, I know "otaku" has multiple applications, but none of them help you rise above the Segway-coveting pack.)
