Click "See Segway HT in action" for video of "Ginger". The guy going in forward and backward circles is insane. Can't wait to see these in the X-Games -- people trickin' off handrails and all that.

Bit more info: http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,186660,00.html

quote:
...Kamen's vehicle is a complex bundle of hardware and software that mimics the human body's ability to maintain its balance. Not only does it have no brakes, it also has no engine, no throttle, no gearshift and no steering wheel. And it can carry the average rider for a full day, nonstop, on only five cents' worth of electricity.
---
In fact, ordinary folks won't be able to buy the machines for at least a year, when a consumer model is expected to go on sale for about $3,000. For now, the first customers to test the Segway will be deep-pocketed institutions such as the U.S. Postal Service and General Electric, the National Parks Service and Amazon.com--institutions capable of shelling out about $8,000 apiece for industrial-strength models.

It's like that old joke: What do a fat chick and a moped have in common? (Looks like that joke will soon be ammended to: What do a fat chick and Segway HT/"Ginger" have in common?)

In other words, it's dorky looking. Personally, I don't think so.

Steve, I believe Otaku is referring to the fact that these machines are geek-mobiles and no guy tooling around on one would ever hope to pick up a chick who hasn't been in a coma for the past twenty years.

Also anyone who decides that they no longer want to walk anymore is going to balloon.

"...a replacement alternative to walking..."

Yeah, because North Americans aren't fat and lazy enough as it is, let's give them more compact vehicles to avoid excercise with. Pardon me, bartender? I'll take a hypodermic full of chicken fat straight to my heart.

Aww yeah..that's the medicine.

Everyone here at work also had a good laugh about them making people lazier. But, let me ask you: ever walked 10 blocks in Manhattan? I'd say riding one of these things is a better alternative than spending good cash every day on a cab or battling with the subway. Not to mention the environmental impact.

As for looking dorky, it's no worse than seeing a grown man in a suit riding one of those stupid Razor scooters.

While we're at it, "Otaku" is not the right username if you're going to accuse others of excessive geekiness... shouldn't it be "TooOldForCartoonsMan" or something? (And yes, I know "otaku" has multiple applications, but none of them help you rise above the Segway-coveting pack.)

<edit>Not an attack, I don't want you to think we're gang-beating you. I'm just pointing it out.</edit>

I know im a nerd, but Im a nerd in the cool, hip, designer sort of way. Not some ass on a scooter that looks like it was designed for geriatric patents with little use of their legs.
