Or so it seems

In my mail today......

"Hello,

We're contacting you as a subscriber to the Freedom2Surf's
experimental free web hosting service.

At Freedom2Surf we're constantly updating our web hosting
service and one of our big concerns is to make sure we have
the highest standards of customer service. To be able to
provide this we have decided to discontinue the experimental
free hosting service that we have been running.

The service will continue until February 28th 2002 after
which time any websites which have not transferred to our
Global Hosting package will be closed.

But don't panic! To switch your website from the free
hosting service to our Global Hosting package, couldn't be
easier and it's excellent value, you get:

+ .com domain name registration
+ Telephone and email support
+ online web statistics
+ Frontpage extensions
+ PHP4 and Perl CGI
+ MySQL database
+ 20Mb webspace included

Only £36 + VAT per year!

(N.B. Non-UK users do not have to pay VAT, as a rough guide,
£36 is approx EUR 57.50 and $51.50)

Other options available include:"

Ah well.... slow sometimes... but good while it lasted... Yes Yes Yes... you get what you pay for!

Damn and double damn that we UK residents get stung for VAT too!! I suppose you get a .com thrown in for that too - it looks like its worth the upgrade - which I suppose was their plan all along.

OK anyone know of another free service? From what I've seen here, with people trying all sorts of places, it doesn't look likely. Is the free lunch over I wonder?

I think now might be the time for Pugzly to launch a competitively priced Running Wolf budget hosting service!!

Poeple might want to look at www.portland.co.uk - some issues but they seem OK.

butcher: That just about sums it up.

Anyone in the UK might want to look at www.freeola.com (no MySQL, .htaccess, etc. and not much help) you have to dailup to them to upload so I'm not sure it will suit broadband people but worth a look (I've not checked it out for external linking but I doubt it!!).

They just figure a percentage will transfer and, voila, instant business. It really pisses me off but whatever. They're out to make money. Can't fault 'em for that. But, I just moved my entire site there this week! I'm gonna check out onehost...

That is an impressive offer they have their (with UK and Oz variants) and the Unix offer is impressive (pricing fixing is an interesting offer) although it seems a little too much for my current needs it might be worth getting in early - is anyone hosted by these people? It does beat f2s' upgrade offer!!

Anymore suggetions?

10 email accounts, 5 forwards, email groups, databases, myphpadmin, ftp, ssi, Plesk Control Panel to manage your own stuff, custom error docs, your own cgi-bin, etc.

Others in the Asylum who already host with us are free to comment on the service....

pspong.com and gurusnetwork.com are also hosted with us. One of these days, I might even get Doc to host with us

Okay, my mistake. I hate being a "salesman".

<salesman>
.15 per MB per month of disk space. Minimum 25MB. No setup costs for name-based hosted sites. Limit is 10GB of traffic, unless we make other arraigments. Includes FTP for site maintenance. Anonymouse FTP is extra, since I'd have to tie an IP address to the domain. Web based statistics (Webalizer) also included, and looks like this.

Also includes web based email option, mod-perl, SSI, and all the stuff I mentioned earlier. Setup is usually completed before the domain name is finished propagating, so as soon as that's done, you're live. We can tie other domain names to the same site via straight forwarding or frame forwarding as well.

Hope that answers any questions.
</salesman>

edit: I should add that the Plesk Control Panel gives you an HTML based control panel to administer your site. It includes mail management, dns, myphpadmin, stats, reports, etc.

Well I currently have all my stuff on angelfire, but I do have access is a UNIX Apache server from Godcore.com and I'm making a move over there. Angelfire has been a pretty damn good host, I had to write a script to break those banners from popping up and you can't direct link anything from them, but hey 50MB for free? The only reason I am switching over to the Godcore server is because I like using PHP and PERL, especially Weadah's PHP/Flash Dribble. I'm willing to bet that all these Free hosting sites will be down within a year, but angelfire is now pretty big. I'd stay away from Tripod though. The best thing in the world is to get your own domain if you got the money.
