Any hardcore console gamers lurking about? I've been planning on getting my kid PS2 for christmas this year.. mostly because it's backwards compatible so all his current games will still play. But now I keep hearing xbox xbox xbox everywhere I go. Any opinions? Anybody got one? Doesn't look like there's nearly as many games available.. yet perhaps? Kinda pricey.. Looks like a big step up from PS2 but is it really necessary?

I've been thinking about buying one of these, either xbox, gamecube, or playstation 2. A few of my friends bought xbox and seem to love it, but graphically it really isn't much better than playstation 2 or gamecube. Each of these systems has its advantages and disadvantages. Gamecube is cheaper and will have the classic mario series games. It is slightly less powerful than the xbox, however. Playstation 2 has an abundance of very good games, can play dvds, but is the slowest of the three from a hardware standpoint. Xbox is probably the most expensive all around, although it has the best hardware, a large number of games coming out soon, can play dvds, will soon have built-in broadband web play, and is backed by Microsoft (plenty of cash for development). At this point in time, I'm not really sure which one I'm going to buy, but they all look enticing.

We got our kids Playstation 2 last Christmas and they love it. I have to wonder about the xbox as my kids haven't even asked for it, just for more games for the Playstation 2.

As cyoung mentioned, one of the greatest things I think Sony did for parents was to make PS2 backward compatable so my kids can play their PS1 games on it. It also works very nicely to play DVD movies.

No regrets from buying this system.

Just my 2 cents

I have a playstation 2 and I may buy a n Xbox. But I play a lot of sports video games.

Some of the xboxs features do kick butt. It has a hard drive so you don't need all those memory cards to save your games. And you can load music on to the drive for use as background music in some of your games. Broadband gaming also appeals tome.

Don't get me wrong though, I still love my PS2.

The problem with the Xbox is a lot retailers won't sell it outside of a bundle- which is $500.

Just my opinion but, M$ has a reputation for releasing products too soon. PS@ has been around a while and all bugs are worked out. I hope box buyers don't wind up having to buy upgrades and as butcher implied, given their trend of making software less and less backward-compatible, I doubt M$ will change that with the next incarnation of the box.

I've got a PS2 (first day it came out baby) and really like it. While the Xbox has some things going for it (I SO want to play the new oddworld game) from what I understand it costs a decent bit to get it up to speed once you get another controller, the adapter to play DVDs, etc. The gamecube is actually intriguing me, I've heard some great things about it so far. This year for Christmas tho, just PS2 games

PS2 is my favorite. I have played all three systems and PS2 is still the best because of the amount of games out for it. Even though I want to support microsoft's monopoly I probally won't get an X-Box. I have been watching the systems since Atari and I
noticed that there was always going to be a "bigger and better" system comming out.

So I stopped buying the systems sortly after SNES and just played my friends systems while I enjoyed my "computer games". The ultimate game system is just going to be a computer that can only play games on it. I mean look at where all this going. Systems having 20GIG harddrives? (X-box) and systems runnning the 128-bit Playstation 2 CPU which is equal or better than the Pentium II processor.

I mean the goal will be to make it act as much like a computer as they can while remaining the small package. My dad went out and bought a PS2 for my brothers and I play it when ever I can and my roomates at college have a PS2.

It's kinda of a waste to think that my brothers have bought every gamming system out there and they never play them anymore and end up selling them for 75% less then what they orginally bought them for. They have several games for each system that is just going to waste. Hey I hear atari as a system out again.....hmmm...can't wait. So I say get the PS2 and have your kids enjoy the system while it's still considered new.

Why not buy a Dreamcast? It costs about as much as a single game for any of the newer systems, and has loads of amazing games.

Some of the best games, in my opinion:

Sonic Adventure 2 (not so much 1 but it's still good)
Crazy Taxi 1 and/or 2
Jet Grind Radio
Capcom vs SNK if you want a skill-based fighter, and
Marvel vs Capcom 2 if you want a random button-mashy one
Power Stone 1 and/or 2
Soul Calibur
Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram
Metropolis Street Racer
These are all the games I can think of off the top of my head which I've played and loved, and
Space Channel 5, Sega GT, Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, none of which I've played but have been told that they're awesome

But if you want to spend lots of money, I wouldn't recommend an xbox or ps2 over a 'cube, since they both cost more than the cube, the ps2 has a mediocre selection of games, and the xbox.. um.. isn't worth it until they find a way to emulate next-gens on it or something.

Hi everyone,

As, obviously, the only woman on this thread, i feel that i must add my two cents!

First, i have PS1, and think it was a good buy. Lots of games, most of them great.

Secondly, it's backwards compatible. I am not about to lose all that money i have spent on them!

Thirdly, PS2, is an excellent upgrade from its predecessor, plays dvd's, in other words, no kids on your

expensive "adult" dvd/cd player!

Last, but, not least, it's a winner and a keeper in my book.... I'll get some good years use out of it before i will upgrade to the PS3!!!

In other words, Cyoung, Get Your Kids The PS2!!!!!! From one parent to another....its a wise choice, moderate

expense when u consider the fun ur kids will get out of it, and the money u'll have saved not having to start a new

game collection from scratch!!!!

Peer---sorry, but I have to agree with Dark on this one. Dreamcast never has and never will keep up with the big

boys..definitely not PS2.

BTW, those happen to be some of My Favorites!

I know, I have a brother, cousins, and a great many male friends to attest to my familiarity with this topic! Comes with the territory when ur hangin w/ the guys all the time...Sorry, Dad, ur included!

Ok, on the PS2's dvd capability: My friend owns a PS2. He bought it for Monster Rancher 3 and FF10. He tried to play some DVDs on it, and out of the ones that he tried, one (1) worked. One didn't load at all, and the rest had copy protection that the ps2 didnt like but which played on his actual DVD player. I say that's pretty shoddy.

Wow. Thanks for all the advice. Just took my kid Christmas shopping at Walmart and happened by the electronics section. heh. They had kiosks up for all 3..
PS2- graphics look great.. had some skateboarding game on it.. owns the game inventory
Nintendo cube- impressive graphics again.. seemed like the play was a bit more fluid (faster processor?).. had some jet ski game playing and a wimpier game selection to choose from.
Xbox- This thing rock and rolls! It had some multi-player game on it where you race around in various highly modified cars, bulldozers etc destroying the other players with a pretty imaginative host of weapons. Boxing gloves that punch from the grill, the driver will throw aluminum cans at 'em, there's an axe to chop 'em with, laser guns, etc.. I think cel damage was the name. My kid was beyond glued to this thing.. at least till I made him give me a shot. The graphics are gorgeous, the play is furious, the sound is right there.. very immersive. We must have played that demo for better than a half hour. Turned around and there were 3 or 4 teen agers patiently waiting their turn. Wonder if they ever saw a 30 some year old kid before? There were probably about 25 games for it.. including the favorite PS sports games. $300 US- just the console, power cord and one controller. Same as PS2. I wonder if it's marked wrong. All the stuff I saw on-line was in the $500 range.

Now- here's what I'm thinking. This thing is really new and with microsoft behind it will be a big thing once it gains momentum. I think every game on the planet more or less will be available for it shortly.. it has UT already! My fave on the computer. It looks to be upgradeable.. maybe you won't need a new system next year to keep up? I'm going back tomorrow and grabbin it. He can put the PSone on the TV in his bedroom. This can go on in the living room.. convenient for DVD's that way, not to mention the parental control advantages. Thanks Mystica for the spin.. I think I'll get some good years out of this one though, and the PSone will still be available even if it is on a dinky 13" screen. So now the question becomes, which games come first? Football for sure.. NFL Fever or Madden 2002? Then I'm not sure what.. the bloody ones are out since he's not old enough for that yet imo. Maybe Cel Damage.. if that's what it's called.

As I said before, I have a few friends that own an xbox.

Halo is an amazing game, but that's out as far as your son goes because it's rated MA. I would strongly suggest you buy it, though. You can play the actual storyline game with a partner or even 4 players I think. Makes for a great time when multiplayer gets boring. I think it will have some major lasting appeal. Beyond all that, the graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is really good.

I've also played Dead or Alive 3. Again, I wouldn't recommend it for your kid. Only played for a few minutes, but the backgrounds were among the best I have ever seen. Better than anything on the computer. Simply fantastic. The gameplay seemed fun, but these "mortal kombat" type games don't tend to last all that long.

I've had quite a bit of experience with NHL Hitz, and I have to tell you...it's a really fun game. What it lacks in realistic simulation, it makes up for in fun factor. I strongly recommend it. There's little violence except for hard hits and the occasional fistfight. It's like Wayne Gretzky 64, except 100 times better.

The more I think about it, the more I'm beginning to want a xbox.

Alright, well I currently enjoy the pleasure of having all three systems in my room. My roomie owns the xbox and I own the other two. My advice would be to purchase the Gamecube. We went through each system and since then the only system plugged in to the TV is the Gamecube. The games good fun, and Nintendo will release more quality games through its own label in the future. DVD players aren't really new. You can pick one up for fairly cheap. Don't buy the PS2 because of it's DVD player. Don't buy it because of 'backwords compatability' either, I think thats the PS2's biggest gimick. What difference does it make whether or not you can play PS1 games are the PS2, you still own the PS1. Whether you buy any of the three systems, you still have the option of playing the games. I don't think the xbox was designed with children in mind. It's too heavy! The games are horrible! In all honesty, the ONLY good game for it is Halo, and that gets boring after a while. Kids won't get tired of playing Luigi's Mansion, heck us college kids don't.

Had to join in. Did't read all of the posts so I appologize for repeating anything that was said.

I thought about this same question a few weeks ago and I got PS2 and I'll tell ya why.

PS2 and XBox both play DVD's. Very cool. The XBox however, you have to have a sepearte control to run them. PS2 you don't.

To save a game the XBox has a hard drive so you don't have to pay the $30 for a memory card.

Graphics are about the same but the XBox doesn't have that many games. PS2 can play PS1 games. cool!

So since I have PS1 games and would like to have a DVD in my bedroom, I opted for the PS2.

Game Cube's graphics are really awesome. They all three cost about the same as do the games. So, GO WITH PS2!!!!

I would recommend the Playstation 2 if you want to play PS1 games on it.
Although you can get B.L.E.E.M. for the computer that lets you play PS1 games on the computer.

The Gamecube is good for kids in both size price and game content. Myself I wouls only get it for the Zelda and Starfox games that they will hopefuly get on it. Ihave all the Starfox and Zelda games that I could find since the SNES.

it was between PS2 and XBox...I knew I wanted game system.. but which one?

Well.. after carefully exploring my options, Xbox left PS2 in dust. Same price, but much faster, you can connect to the internet with it, Games will be also made for it, plus you don't need no stinking memory card.. why? Because it has a hard drive!

Both can play DVD's but you need additional hardware for them, PS2 and Xbox require you to buy DVD converter thing. Its ok with me.

Begining of next year, you will be able to download additional things for your XBox from the website (if you have it hooked up to the net of course)...

Xbox is much much better than PS2, it does more, its same price, and its more powerfull... and that's a fact and not just my opinion...

I was leaning toward NFL Fever.. the graphics looked awesome.. then some kid told me the play is not so great, you complete every pass you throw- kinda takes the challenge out of it. XBox = NO~

If you have a PSX, even being the Nintendo fan I am, there's every reason to get a PS2, for reasons that some people have already pointed out. The XBox might have nice graphical capabilities, but take a look at how many games out right now for the XBox (and the GameCube, for that matter) are just ports of PlayStation 2 games, some without even graphical improvements.

Apart from that, the technological edge the XBox has isn't as great as some would have you believe. The three systems are a lot closer in terms of capability than many may think, though the XBox and the GameCube do offer a decided improvement over the PS2 in terms of eye candy. But you have to remember that the PS2 is very capable, though it's very challenging to program a game to take full advantage of its components. Aside from that, the PS2 has an absolutely ENORMOUS user base, meaning that it isn't going away any time soon, and will have good third-party development support for a while yet.

And Microsoft is evil as hell!

Personally, though, I'm going to buy a GameCube, since it's more than capable, and has Nintendo's amazing first- and second-party developers behind it, plus it's brought massive third-party support back to Nintendo for several reasons (I hear Sonic Team from Sega is really loving the GameCube dev kit). And it's a purple box. You can't beat that. Not to mention I've been playing Nintendo since the age of 3 and Shigeru Miyamoto is my personal hero. I can only hope my name shares a spot near his in the annals of game design somewhere down the road.

Having recently played a demo gamecube, I have one thing to say: WOW. Rogue Squadron alone is reason enough to buy that system.

But anyway, to restate my stance:
Xbox is too big and doesnt have enough good games for it (ie: none at the moment :/ Halo is shiny but boring, DOA3 is a DOA game, making it auto-suck, and Munch's Oddyssey, despite me wanting it to be good, isn't)
PS2 has a total of one (1) good games, and that's prolly gonna get ported to the PC anyway, with much improvement (GTA3 btw)... I have an old SCPH1001 to play my psx games with as well, without all the compatibility problems that the ps2 has (FF Anthology.. Way to go Sony, making one of the good psx games not-work)
Gamecube: An explosion of fun, and at 2/3 the price of the two other major competitors.
Dreamcast: Has a ton of great games, has an amazing Good:Crap ratio, costs as much as a ps2 game.
... And can play the original metal gear solid and make it look as good as MGS2 minus the apparent dumness!

All this thread really achieves it to show the Asylum something that gamers in other areas have known for net-aeons: the only answer to the console question is personal opinion. Sure, you should look at the games instead of the technology. But which games are good is also a matter of opinion. For instance, I like Dead or Alive 2, and I dislike the Tekken series. Thousands of people agree with me; thousands disagree; each side can muster lucid arguments. But so what?

If you're in doubt, just read some game reviews, rent each system, rent some of the top-rated games for each system, and make your own decisions. But don't listen to me OR anyone else -- we just have opinions, not facts.
