Ooh, it kills your CPU, but I like it! I was working on the http://www.the5k.org/ contest, and could have kept this at about 1.5k, but I had to invest 3k in my logo! Heh, can't have a page without the logo, can I?

Oh, I just added the flash bit, I changed the logo from a compressed GIF to a one frame Flash 6.x movie. I'll go back and make that into an older version flash logo, it's been worth it for the extra 2k I saved! (Total bite now only 2833 bytes, woo! What shall I do with my extra 2k?)

edit: I changed the flash logo (which does nothing, BTW, all the action is using HTML and Javascript), and now all you'd need is Flash 3. Ooh, it cost me an extra 15 bytes, though, ouch!

Just to let you know.....it raped and pilidged my browser. When I closed that window the asylum window scrolled right to the bottom at nothing less than the speed of light and started to make some weird error sounds, it was that "dong" sound (thats the best interpretation i can come up with).

Windows XP Pro
MS IE 6.0.2600.0000.xpclnt_qfe.010827-1803 (now thats a version #)

I did look cool and was smooth as silk and when I clicked and dragged my mouse accros some of them they would turn black. Is it supposed to do that?

Actually, the only graphics there are the copyright line, and the small hihlight/shadow transparent gif floating over each square (set at 30% opacity). My original intention was to save the RGB values and have some kind of morphing color pattern going on, but it takes forever to make changes to those 288 layers! Moving them seems to eat much less CPU, I froze my system quite a few times while working out the best way to make all of those things do something at the same time, heh. I fear this one will never be efficient enough to use as an interface concept, it's relagated to "high-powered, useless toy" category, heh heh.

Like the idea though...heh, reminds me of a web-safe colors chart....

Ah, I just made that query string thing go away, you must have entered while I was still working. Now I change the colors to one of 9 different schemes on the fly, instead of trying to pass along the value to the page by reloading, that wasn't very elegant IMHO. That whole bit with the different color profiles cost me nearly 700 bytes, so now I'm up to about 3.5k. I'm thinking I should use some of this space to create some graphics to indicate to people that moving your mouse one way does something to the motion, and another does what it does. (Sorry for you slow PC-types out there! All your processor cycles are belong to us.)

Very cool Doc.

I still get a "QueryString is undefined" error (Win2k, IE5.5), but it works fine when I tell it to keep running scripts.

I love the colors! It reminds me of something, but that was a long time ago (round about 72) but we don't talk about *that* any more.

Ok, cool. Butcher, I did find that line, I had a test document.write of the query string (which I don't use anymore), and it must have got forgotten in there, so poof! Gone. (Saving an additional 30 bytes, woo! :-) Thanks for following up on that, I don't know why it wasn't giving me that error, I usally have things set to report *everything*.

I've been adjusting the colors again, now the available 9 ranges have variations only in 2 of 3 of the "RGB" values, this makes it smoother looking IMHO, when it got into full "sine wave mode" it looked kinda ugly with too many colors. It also centers itself onresize now, that makes me much happier.

It's silly almost how happy this thing makes me! I can just sit and stare at it, moving my mouse around periodically. What a geek.

You could save yourself a bunch of memory by using references. For instance, just stick these near the top, and then make use of it later... these are just some examples I came up with...

d=document;
b=d.body;
m=Math;
c='client'; // (use this like b[c+'Width'] for document.body.clientWidth, et cetera)... actually only saves 2 bytes per occurance of 'client', but whatever =)
w=d.write; // optional; you might use this to replace some occurances of HTML with a script that writes out words that are used more than once, such as 'title>' and 'style>'

Beyond that, I'd say that you don't really need the <body> tags (or at least not the </body> tag). And I'd warn you that this isn't going to work in all browsers, and I think that may be a concern in this competition...

[edit: oh, you can also probably remove line breaks, or if you don't want to do that, you can at least remove the *semi-colons* before line breaks since JS doesn't require them there.

and if you're really feeling insane towards the end of this, I'm sure there are a bunch of letters of the alphabet (plus the underscore character) that you could swap with your two- and three-letter variable names.]

Hmm, maybe I was wrong. I just spent an hour or so trying to compact it, and was only able to cut off 105 bytes. I followed most of my advice up above, plus redefined f=Function and a=Array (you have five "new Array"'s in there), and did a few other small changes, but it didn't make that big of a dent. So, if you're nearing the end, and you need another 100k cut off, take my advice; otherwise don't worry about it too much.
