The problem, as I see it, is a multi-fold one. Technolody, life, the complexities of society have speeded up so much in the last 50 years that family structure and the education of our children have suffered tremendously. We all have a hand to play in how things have been turning out... From parents who are so busy with their lives that they find it easier to let television, video games and computers take the place of some or all of their parenting responsibilities; to schools and society in general who are spending so much time and effort arguing over what to do to solve the problem that nothing seems to get done.

Too many kids are growing up learning to use the tools of society without being taught the wisdom to determine when and how best to use those tools. Understand I'm speaking of teaching our kids wisdom, not religious morals. Religion has its place in all this and for many, it will be their saving grace in learning to cope with an ever changing world. But it is only one tool amongst many that should be used.

I think that the more we recognize that no one person or group is to blame, the more we realize that we all have to step back from our harried lives and take a more active role in the lives of our children (or if you don't have children, then the lives of children around you be they brothers, sisiters, neices, nephews, etc..), the closer we'll be to reversing this disturbing trend.

The subject of one of the papers we had to write in history class was centered around this question:

How many deaths or murders would the average person see if they had no exposure to television or movies?

As with most history teachers he spent a bit of time forcing his own beliefs on us but his overall premise was that the interconnectivity of society coupled with the bloodlust of the entertainment industry is leading to a nihillistic society that Nietzsche would be proud of.

I couldnt get the article to laod but I have never been one who enjoyed having to be spoonfed media tripe. I doubt all the blame falls on the 'average rushed american' Ever see any Jon Woo films before he hit the states? The US dosent exactly corner the market on murder for fun.

Witherin hit some salient points but maybe the increase in the societial blemishes you see manifested externally in violence, crime, rape, murder, etc...are really just symtoms of the fall of a society... Babaylon is no more, Egypt was lost, Athens collapsed, Rome fell, are we so naieve that we believe we will escape the same fate?

...it could almost digress philosophical discussion.

You bring up some good points Moaiz. Certainly the items I'd mentioned don't cover all the problems. Just a large chunk of them. As do the points that you bring up. Violence has been a part of society all the way back to when history was first being recorded (and certainly before that time as well). It seems a lot worse these days because we are all so aware of everything that's going on around the world. Negative stories are grist for the news mill. News organizations compete against each other just as much as any other business. They're always on the hunt for the latest, most important or sensational news story out there. As a result, a lot of the bad things going on in the world get news play, and very little in the way of good things get airplay. Hearing about church socials, a ventriloquists convention, etc.. just doesn't make as much of a marketing impact as being current on the war on terrorism or the latest fires, murders, etc..

As for the downfall of society or the downfall of countries.. Well I'm a child of British parents; I grew up in Canada; and now I live in one of the more unique segments of these United States. Countries will come and go, but people will go on.

I am sorry that something like this happened in your own town InI. Having the sick-sad world get up in your face like that is veyr hard. A few years ago at a party I watched somone get shot to death over three doallars, as he was going down he ripped off a few shots at the guy who shot him who happened to be running into the crowd watching the exchange. He hit two girls right near me, I could hear the bullets hit thier flesh. I guess living in a city that is usually in the top five for violent crimes per capita will allow exposure to certain things.

The idealist in me would like to think that some degree of control can be excercised responsibly while maintining liberty. The realist in me keeps a gun in his car or near his person at all times and has a shotgun in the closet by the front door loaded with 00-buck bcause I sure dont see it getting any better anytime soon, anywhere.

i am 17 and i like ego shooters and i sit infront of my pc 24/7 ...does that make me to a murder ?? no...i dont want to givbe fault to the system but i think teachers could do allot to solving such problems ...because teachers at the moment are overworked stressed and have no time for their pupils...if class sizes where decreased and teachers where trained in solving pupils personal problems (like drugs family problems ect.) that would help allot ..i hope you understand me ???
