Just curious what other online communities you are involved with? The Asylum is the first place I have participated in- so I guess I compare everything else to this! A few days ago I registered with flashkit, and boy I wasn't used to the size of it. You post a question and see that the thread immediately gets bumped down because so many people are on at once-but also there are more people- so the question does tend to get a pretty fair response. The overall design is not as high scale as it is here. Folks here definitely are of a higher caliber designer- definitely noticeable.

Yeah the asylum is the first forum I participated in too. Does tend to give one pretty high standards to judge the other forums by doesn't it?

This is the only forum that I am part of for graphics design but I am thinking of joining a forum at sijun.com too. For none design stuff I am part of White Wolf and the Wizards as tj333 forums for RPG games and the Overclockers forum at www.overclockers.com as tj9 for computer stuff.

This is always going to be my home forum , but over the last year or so , it has been going to the wall with a shit load of young arrogant kids (which is a shame really). Most of the ppl who encouraged/inspired me at join here in the first place, have either moved on or rarely participate anymore. Can't blame them really either.

Why go to other forums??.

Well VP is right about "it has been going to the wall with a shit load of young arrogant kids (which is a shame really)." as it has been over a few months or so, but it's nearly summer term so what do you expect?

Over the last year I have noticed that people who where here a lot just don't come here a more and if they do it's just a few posts and that?s it... shame because there where good people to have and share things with, oh well that?s life and how evolution and generation go

I have been to other forums like computer arts, create online, graphic forums, etc but not really compares them to this place, as there mostly full of silly kids who are just out to rip or just fu*k around and not learn new things and improve on themselves. So I still come back here .

I'm more of a lurker in other communities...
Couple of design/art communities...
One or two to gather some general knowledge about PHP or something...
There's a few that i browse just for the sake of reading children flaming each other...

Then i've got 2 main forums that i'm actually active in....
One for when i'm bored... (highly active)
and of course.... the zone. (little/no activity)

And that about sums it up.
And um... I'd like to "second" VP's comments.

I'm currently an active member in 3 more messageboards (one kiddies place, one with amateur video game developers and one with just much random stuff going on) and lurking on at least three more (may change every week or so)...

But, as for the complaining about 'older' members leaving and new members coming; That's the way it is. Stuff happens. I've also seen people who've been away for a while (Petskull, Mikey Milker, DarkGarden, Shiii to name a few) who came back... Obviously, they couldn't stay away from the asylum... You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave...

And the newbies? They need to be taught. You don't become brilliant in a day.... and it doesn't take talent, it takes practise! This was the first board I went to, and I've learned a lot of stuff here, as I don't doubt everybody did. Look at a random newbie with just 15 posts under his belt. In a year, he might be one of the most contributing members on this board.

mas: Its not a question of age (although discussion on this often uses age related terms) its a question of maturity and this needn't correlate with age so I don't think you've got much to worry about

I ended here from:
www.phpbuilder.com http://forums.devshed.com

swinging in via the GN but I haven't really posted much over at the first 2 in a long while (although there are less members here there are members here of a much higher quality than you'll find in most places).

I've recently stuck my head in at:
www.stickysauce.com

as it got a lot of press in the UK recently - its a bit quiet but shows a lot of promise if it can get the community really going. However, it is the GN and Asylum for me for the time being I appreciate the mix of art and code that the Doc has managed to bring together and as I said some of the coders and artists here of a quality you are unlikely to find elsewhere (so certain sections would be well advised to listen to them more).

I also get a little bored in my wanderings elsewhere.

Don't really hang out anywhere else. I lurk at Fark and used to post there a bit, but the average intelligence over there equals that of a golf ball. Plus, the nature of the place really isn't conducive to extended discussion on a particular topic.

I also used to hang out a bit at WWDN (WilWheaton.net... yeah, that Wil Wheaton. I came across his site at Fark and was so shocked to find out that he's become a pretty cool guy that I started hanging out there, before I found the Asylum) Soapbox, but I kind of stopped going there. I may pop back in now that I have a little more time these days.

As for this place going to the doghouse, well, I haven't been around long, but from what I've seen I think reitsma is right. The really annoying people may come from time to time, but they don't stick around. I don't know what this place used to be like, but I think it's still pretty cool now. Just my $0.02.

Hmmm... Well, i first came here because I have the upmost respect for the man who first taught me Photoshop (Thanks Doc!). While I was here I met a lot of other people who I respect just as much. Alas, some of them have left now, others have joined but and the passage of time leaves it's mark in my mind.

Although I must admit, I do miss the old asylum. Maybe it's the people, maybe it's all because of how the (loose use of the term) 'design' scene has changed with the times....

Eh, I don't koww. Maybe I'm just full of crap.

Other places I hang out? Well, that all depends. I'll got anywhere I can get some honest and constructive feedback about my work. I thought I could get that at www.deviantart.com but there's just a bit too much trumpet blowing happening there for my liking. Still, it's a nice place, nice system. I also pop into sijun's, gfxartist's and in-front every now and then too. Oh and I lurk a lot at the GN.

Well, well...interesting...as for me...I 'breeze' a lot of boards...and for reasons of my own...but this here, is home. My family....and like every family, there are growing pains...

Tho I'm a relative 'n00b' (to coin a phrase...sorry Izzay) in comparison to some of the long-standing members...yes, I have noticed changes in attitude here...and not just from the 'arrogant, young kids'...but also from those who I have looked up to and respected...for some reason, it seems there is a 'split' in the Aslylum...an older 'elite' if you will...and us ravening loonies...maybe we all need to consider why we are here for a minute...and those of us that can help those 'younguns' out...should. I always thought that is what it was all about here.

I know there were (and still are) times when some of you helped me out...and guided me (not always in a nice fashion...but at least it was truthful...and I couldn't ask for anything more...that's what I really like about this place...one learns so fast here, in comparison to somewhere else...brutal honesty...the best medicine).

Yes, some very fine talent has gone...and come back. I personally would like to see some of the older memebers step up to bat, and grasp the bull by the horns, so to speak. That's what I always admired and respected, from twitch^ , DG, Taxon (now Michael) and Bitdamaged (now Reitsma). Of course, Bugs is still here (god bless his heart) and so is VP (don't mess with his mop...). And where would we be without Grumble and Slime?

The past is gone...long live the future!

As for the 'younguns'...maybe actually trying to listen to (or read, if you will) what some of the older, more experienced veterans post would go a long way to helping and increasing ones skills...yes, sometimes it can be brutal, with your self esteim (sp) laid bare and trampled on...but honesty is a way better form for learning, then getting sweet words blown up your ***. Too many times I've seen such advice ignored or worse, flatout challenged...instead of at least trying to listen...and learn. I think Drac is a good example of someone who can listen well...and appropriately, his skills have increased immensely...you've come a long way, Drac, in a relatively short time...Kudos, man. There is no substitute for good ol' hard work...

Well, that's about it for my little 'rant' here...keep in mind that it's just my opinion...

Perhaps its not so much going to the wall as evolving like a living thing. I think its up to the veterans to help steer it in the right direction, even if that means dropping some members who continue to be abusive or arrogant.
