I'm selfish. My favorite word is my family name, "viol".
By the way, it has a meaning in english: it's a musical instrument.
It also has a meaning in french: rape (yikes!)
But it has no meaning in my own language (portuguese - pronounced vi-OL, being the "i" said as in beep, not as in by) neither, AFAIK, in the place it came from (Italy).

So, when a couple was going to fornicate, the had to hang a little sign on the door: Furnicating Under Counsentiment of the King....

Or something like that I read once!!!!

At one of my old jobs, I used to do a word of the day. Sometimes the word was a formula (math or chemical), latin phrase, or something equally oddball.

One day I used "felonious" as the word. Nobody knew what it meant. Talk about a disappointment, but that's kind of the point, isn't it?

Considering the day before with "felonious", I decided on my favorite word: "discombobulate". Suprisingly, everybody knew that word. I'm still scratching my head over that.

The reason is that I heard of this condition several years ago on the radio and I never knew how to spell it correctly and therefore had a hard time finding references to it on the net. The closest I could come was the way I did above. Umm.... and yeah I guess it is pretty wierd. Wierder yet is the fact that this is real. The news report I heard a while back was about a man who paid a "doctor" $10K to amputate his leg but they had to do it in Mexico. But the operation went terribly wrong and the guy got an infection and died. So the authorities were prosecuting the doctor. Yikes.
