tomeaglescz: I agree on the commrecial project front (I've moved Karl's thread to OC if anyone is interested in that). About volunteers - I would take people's signing up as a general indication that they are ready and willing unless they specifically can't make it at the moment. If you do take on the Ripper Report it might be worth forming and idea of what needs doing once WS has drawn up some detailed specs and then contact the relevant people about parts of the project (getting people to specifically volunteer for different projects would probably get unworkable quickly).

emps, my thinking behind the volunteer part is this,

Some people might not want to work on certain projects, or might not have the time at the moment to commit to a given project, so rather than a team leader just emailing who ever and saying hey we doing the ripper report ..oh by the way as ya name is in the pool you got the job og html etc. It will streamline things, i for one dont want to undertake more than one project at a time to start with, so i think that getting people to add their name to the volunteer part isnt such a bad idea, they have said they are interested already you are right, but as i mentioned they may not have the time yet to participate, if we keep it this way it will give the team leader a team that is availiable now to work on the project also how long each persona is availiable, if someone is only availiable for a short time and the project time will exceed that then again it gives the team leader time to plan for such circumstances...maybe volunteer was the wrong word for that heading not sure

tomeaglecz: Its your call, of course, but I wonder if an opt out rather than an opt in system might be better - you might be sitting around wondering why people haven't volunteered for a project while other people are sitting around thinking that signing up in the general area was sufficient to register their interest.

Emps lol it could work both ways ya right, i am trying to figure out an easy way for people to say that they are free to work on a project and then add them to the pool the team leader can choose from for a given project.

OK we will try it this way this time if it works out confusing we will try another way on the next project:

PLEASE NOTE:

All those people who volunteerd for the team project, we will be undertaking the Ripperreport as our First Project (WS ), if you are availiable to work on this please add your name to the individual project team here http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/609 , also in your prefered category eg html graphics coding etc. If there is a shortage of one type and a surplus in others the team leader will assign someone who may have multiple skills to another part of the project; ie ya may not end up in the part ya wanted ( Such is real life )

WS The ball is in your court, lets make this first one a good one as it's inhouse so to speak all the little problems can be ironed out for an venture external to this crazy place

Even if people signed themselves up as being available for a project circumstances could change and as this is all on a voluntary basis you'd need to contact people to confirm their availability anyway.

Anyway good to see things are moving forwards

WS - pardon my ignorance, what is the ripperreport about? I gather from the name, it's to do with preventing ripping of work, but what's the specifics?

I looked under the FAQ, but nothing there just yet...

I'd like to help out, but would like to know what I'd be getting into first to determine 1) if my skills, such as they are, are needed, and 2) if I'll have time to participate...

Yeah, bohdi, I'm getting the information organized...it'll be posted soon.

What is the ripperreport? Well, first of all, it's about information...providing information to others on rippers, and on copyright laws, and providing help to those who need help against rippers.

What it is not - it's not to be used to 'witch-hunt', or to 'police' the net...all rippers will be treated as innocent until proven guilty...i.e. only actual proof of ripping will be considered. No lynch partys, personal vendettas, or in-community stuff.

With enough support, it could become a very good source for information on known rippers, and become a place where people can gather support against a known (or proven) ripper. Also, maybe a way could be developed where artists could protect their graphics...but that is at this time just in the idea phase...I think Ini was working on something along these lines...

More on this later...

Ok, let's get this thing rolling...

First of all, I have webspaced already reserved for this, so no-one has to go out and do this...unless we decide differently, that is. I will mail every part of the team (or should I just mail you, Tom?) the password and such...the first step, so to speak, so that we have a 'central' area to work in...maybe making a folder where we can start moving this thing? Any suggestions?

Next, the outline (and what the site is, what we need, etc) - we need to start moving on that...it's important IMHO. Lay-out, design, colors, logo, DB, back-end, links, etc.

Then we need a 'central' place where we can 'meet', so to speak...to exchange ideas, brainstorm, bitch, etc. Anyone got a solution for that? Maybe opening a thread here? (would rather not have it in the open, here) Maybe in the Basement? Or one of the Private areas? Ideas, anyone?

Ok, Tom, it's your baby, get us started...let's get the ball rolling!

ws great stuff, ok if ya can fire an email to me with the specifics that you require as in:

Pages

Front page what ya want there

content pages

do you want a form for people to submit rips to site etc.

a page of rips?

my suggestion would be form based.

also to avoid controversy only confirmed rips etc should be in the public area, those people you want to work with you on the finished site could have access to online info in a secure area about investigations in progress etc.

so there will need to be a login page

its this type of stuff we need now from you so i know who to pass what work onto, think of everything you want and how it will work step by step from someone submitting a potential rip to it being published etc,

its this kind of stuff we need so we can make suggestions or start but we need your ideas, then we can start on building the areas, so fire up a basic outline into the RR section under previous projects and we can then get cracking > )

Ok, I'll get the mail 'sized' up...with all the relavant issues that you raised...and I will send you everything you need to logon to the site - from there, we need to decide a few things...I'll pass on what Emps and I have discussed on this so far...

As I see it now, we'll need a main page, with ways to 'report' rips, information on what we are (and what we are not), a page of known 'violators', like you said, a private area to do investigations, links, and a forum would be essential (IMHO). I don't know if a form page would work, because rips will have to be 'proved' i.e. we need proof, either code, text and/or graphic. That with the first two would work in a form page, but the last one (graphics), I don't think will. That's why we need a forum, with both a 'public' and non-public area (one for people to come to, comment, report rips, etc) and another for the actual investigating...

Also, I have contact with a lawyer who is interested in this...his specialty is media law, which is right up our alley. As this thing gets going, I'm pretty sure he could be a valuable source and...he's free!

As for the Logo...well, I see we have some graphic people on board...I thought that maybe we could have a little 'fun' with that...and have some submissions...and then we could all decide on the 'best' one...or we could go like the GN with a 'revolving' logo, or whatever. In any event, the 'front' page, so to speak, will have to be dynamic...as we are providing information, it is imperitive that we be up-to-date ASAP. This can be done best with a dynamic site (IMHO).

I'd say that the MS forum would be fine for general discussion of these things (and you can use the Site reviews forum for when you want feedback).

I think WS has everything planned out pretty well (and that is great news that you have found a lwayer) - one thing I was thinking of was an information area for authors on tings like copyright, etc. and something to provide people with a plan of action:

e.g. if you think you've been ripped:

1. Take screenshots of all relevant things.

2. Contact the person you think has done the ripping (most things can be sorted out this way).

3. If they refuse to take down the content and you have a good case report it and we'll have a look and if there is a good case to answer we drop them a line (pos. pointing them to the information centre where there should be something on 'fair use' as I suspect a lot of problems stem from people thinking that content is up for grabs).

4. If they are a persistent offender or using ripped content for profit and are still not taking down their content it would be time to write up a report of what they've done and what we've done to ask them to take things down - as we saw with BSS these things can bounce around the Internet causing trouble for quite some time and it is important to have something written down publically presenting the evidence in a clear calm way.

We should probably draw up something similar for when people see potential rips:

1. Take screenshots.

2. Contact the person who has been ripped and leave it up to them to take what action they feel is necessary (pos. starting at point 1 above ).

3. If you aren't sure of the origin of the stolen material drop us a note and we'll try to track it down and contact the person whos stuff it is.

Anyway interesting stuff keep up the good work.

It might be a good diea to start a new thread in the MS lab to discuss the actual project and its development.

I'd keep the discussion here and then just drop the URL(s) of the discussion into the appropriate node in the FAQ.
