Just an idea for a kind of pong game.

Someone comes up with an idea such as an advert either web based or for print.

a group of us get together and each person within that group undertakes one part of the project and work as a team to produce the overall final project, it would be good practice to work with a group sharing different skills and also be interesting as it would have to be discussed etc via email or online chat rather than the usual round the table meetings, anyone interested???

tomeaglescz: An interesting idea. A while back I think I mentioned a kind of RP for the site reviews section - like a site makeover. People submit sites (at least intially I'd prefer 'worthy' ones, like your local donkey sanctuary, but over time it woul be interesting to throw in a range of different types), we pick one for the month and people offer their talents, a team leader brings together their team and gets cracking. It would provide lots of interesting experience and I'd draw up some rules and mediate in any disputes/misunderstandings (another wonderful aspect of working as a team ).

Thoughts?

emps sounds great although i would like to do other projects aswell as web based stuff, but i am in for this one, didnt realise it was already being kicked around, if you want a hand get this one off the ground count me, i have worked on lots of multi skilled group projects as a manager and as a team member, my biggest was heading up the lucent technologies gsm divisions intranet and involved flying just about everywhere from the gsm world hq in england for meetings, so this one is right up my alley.

tomeaglescz: I only mentioned it in passing (I think when Jestah was proposing a fanzine) but I have given it some thought so if other people are interested we could firm things up.

This needn't stop you from working on other team projects (if you wanted to say do a print one in the print forum) but it would leand itself well to that kind of thing with different people bringing different skills to the table, etc.

emps count me in for the web based stuff aswell, i was thinking that we could do random projects maybe set by a few people, but if we can help people out in the way you suggested aswell i think that is a cool idea aswell, my only issue would be how to approach people to do their sites in an unpatromising manner and also who would decide what. Either way i hope this gets enough interest to kick it off the ground, splitting it into different areas might not me a good idea but i am not sure how to get round this, as it really doesnt fall into any category within the forum maybe setting something up outside of the assylum but linked to it like the chess thing would be a good idea for this what ya think.

tomeaglescz: I don't see it as carving the idea up more like spreading it around a little. We have the RP which isn't a contest, we have individual and collaborative contests, there is talk of a debate, etc. so it might be an interesting idea to have group collaborative efforts too but focused at the appropriate forums (site reviews and print for your ideas). There is no reason they need to run for just a month or that a new one has to start as soon as a previous one has finished - you could do a site makeover for a couple of months then do a quite print group project, have a month off, etc. In fact you could have a site makeover or just build one from the ground up - there is plenty of room for flexibility.

How would we get sites? Tricky one but people are involved with various things outside the Asylum in their communities or with larger organisations. In fact they are probably being asked to do various things for various people right now but they just don't have the time. Anyone in this situation?

Anyway we can decide on specific things if enough interest is shown.

Don't think I can be much help in the graphic area, but I can probably help out with some of the coding etc. If we need somewhere to store the site , I might be able to have it on 'my server' (Linux server with Apache, ++) as long as it doesn't become too large. Haven't asked the one who acctually owns the server yet, but I think I could manage to arrange something if needed.

tomeaglescz: OK it looks like things are starting to roll. Its your idea so run with it. Some thoughts:

1. It would be best if the site is non-commercial and small-medium sized - you'll probably get more people offering to help in these circumstances.

2. We'd only need the space for development. The offers of hosting are cool and give us the flexibility to use different types of technology.

3. Who gets to decide - its your idea so its your call. You might want to see what everyone else wants to do if there are a number of options (that may you'll have people more enthusiastic about the project).

4. People who want to join a team should prepare some kind of resume so the project leader can select the best people for the job.

5. It might be best if people who have experience of leading a project like this become the project leader for the first few goes so people can get used to it but I would love to see (sensible, level-headed) people who have never done this before. ts a great learning experience and looks great on one's resume and there is plenty of help around if they need it.

Other ideas as they occur to me.

Ok, if you decide to go with the ripperreport, I've already got space there...with all the extras...and as I'm footing the bills, it costs nada...

As to what has been done...just preliminary work...that's how I start all projects...first on paper, then after all the things have been 'squared away', then the actual 'design' work...

But let's see what tom has to say...

So go with it tom...it's your baby.

ok as it looks like this is going to take off here is my view of how to go forward with this (open to suggestions)

1.create an area in the FAQ where those prepared to participate can put a brief list of thier skills/experience level in

this will create a mini pool of resources a team leader can draw upon for any given task

2. Anyone with ideas for projects can post them in here

3. I dont mind heading up the first project as i have said i have quite a bit of experience in this

4. i would like someone else to take care of this one with me in case i am out of the loop for any reason so emps if ya up for it i would appreciate the help

5. this is going to be on a volunteer basis obviously but if someone commits to any given project they should try and stick with it unless something really crops up that stops them, this is how it works in the real world and if we are going to use this as a learning experience it should apply here aswell.

6. well this is really a question for the doc, if we undertake a project on behalf of someone do we link a credit back here, obviously i would like to see people getting credit for their contributions as they could be used for real life resumee's etc.

the rest i am open for suggetsions to, lets try and keep the momentum going and get something kicked off.

edit oops my new sig was on sorry

ok i added something to the FAQ (I hope i got it right..wasnt sure where to place it so its here: http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/FaqWiki/shownode.php?id=575&sortby=rating

tomeaglescz: Good progress. I moved the node so that it lives with Ozone Traditions (should I change this to Asylum Activities perhaps?) - the neat URL is:
http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/575/

I also started a node where people can sign up:
http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/576/

and another where they can propose a project idea (site, etc.):
http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/577/

I'll shadow you on this (if something comes up I can then either take over or find someone else to do it depending on how busy I am).

I would suggest that you start another node 'Previous Projects' and each project gets another node in there - I think part of the agreement for doing a site would be that there is a link at the bottom of the page 'This site was an Asylum Team project' with a link to the appropariate node. The node could then list what each person did and provide links to any threads where you kept us up to speed on progress or asked for reviews/feedback.

OK in quick answer to the two questions which were posted in the FAQ.

Originally i came up with an idea for a kind of mulit disciplined fpong/rp game involving team work, good practice for the real world; emps put in some really cool ideas and suggested actually taking on real world projects such as site revamps or scratch builds for worthy causes.

So what we are really looking for is people that

1.want to get experience of working as a team, often getting that first job based on ya ability alone is very difficult, so by joining in with a given project all people on that project will recieve full credit in the profect faq, we will place a link on any work back to that faq so people can use it as a site reference.

2.people who are willing to share their talents and hopefully do some good deeds for worthy causes and hopefully bring an even more enhanced reputation to the asylum.

3.all we ask really is for commitment and sensible inputs etc. This is a chance to do some really cool teamwork stuff, it wont just be web based as in sites but at later stages we are hoping to say set a task such as create an advert that will be used in a magazine (fake of course) and so give people experience in other areas.

as far as the non disclosure stuff goes i am not sure what you mean, obviously one area that hasnt been mooted here yet is that of copyright... for projects that we undertake.

here is some ideas that i have...feel free to kick them into touch discuss or add to them.

1.as the work will almost certainly be none profit based or chargeable i think that the work we do should be on a license base where we grant the people we do the work for to use artwork cose etc only on that website unless express permission is given. in that way the copyright will retain with the artist programmer etc. as most of the projects will be shown in a step by step phase in the FAQ area we will be able to show "Prior Knoeweledge" of such artworks coding etc. (Prior knoweledge is one of the key factors in any copyright issue)

2.As for the ripping part or exploitation of an idea that would really be down to two things copyright again and trust; i really hope this is something that wont be an issue here although it has reared its head here a few times.

3.I have already answred a post to someone that was looking for a designer in the photoshop forum, explaining to him what we were doing, i think he may be posting here, here already seems to have posted to the FAQ. This brings into play another point, if we are approached to do a pay site what do we do? do we say give the money to an assylum project like the box, pass it on to doc to do some good with it i.e. charity etc?

4.these issues needed to be kicked around before we actually undertake any projects, once we have set up some guidelines etc we can post them into the FAQ area, so guys please help me out on this one with ya points etc. if there is anything you want to talk about via email my hotmail link is active on the email button.also i can be reached on msn using the same email address.

thx again guys and i look forward to reading ya points of view and getting this thing off the ground

Interesting issues - things I wanted to avoid with this project:

1. Doing inmate's personal sites

2. Taking potentially commerical work away from inmates who are doing this for a living.

If people want paid work doing I think the fair thing to do woud be a to drop a note into Outpatient Counselling so people can pitch for it (offline).

If people want to give some money or a present as thanks then it is the Doc's call. I'd say with cash we give it to the upkeep of the place if it is a present (like a book or something) then we could have some kind of competition or something.

I like your ideas about for allowing use - as things get moving you might want to think about some kind of contract.

tomeaglescz: You've got the start of a contract in your comments above:

1. Usage - they can use the code and graphics but they can't pass the work off as their own or repackage it and sell it.

ETC.

You might also need to look at hosting - although we can provide some hosting during development (if needed) they will need to sort long term hosting out (although we can provide advice on the best deal).

Basically what you need to do is clarify things for both their protection and ours.

Oooh, coolness. Count me in.

WS, I said I'd help out for the Ripper Repost and I'm basically on holidays now so I'm all yours. Just e-mail me and we can get things started! I've been looking over the PHPBB for the past couple of days.

I'm also in for any other projects for the next month and a half. I'll come back tommorow or later on tonight but this is basically the first day of my holidays so I'm off to shoot people online. It's been soooo long. I'll come back and read through everything a bit later and I'll have more to say then.

Although I'm in serious need of bolstering my portfolio in every which way so I'm willing to undertake any work possible over my semester break, be it asylum related or otherwise. I've also been wanting to give something back to the web community at large for a while now as it's given me sooo much. The ripper report seems like a good place to start.

So, basically I'm in for anything PHP, SQL, Perl, Javascript, DHTML, Photoshop, HTML or CSS related.

Kudos to tomeaglescz & Emps for getting the ball rolling.

OK i have been working on an agreement...contract

here are the key points if someone wants to put it into a better looking form or add points thats cool

Ozone's asylum team project agrees to undertake the project for ........ subject to the following conditions.

1.A license is granted to ....... to use the code graphics in the agreed manner, and hereby undertakes not to use said code /graphics in other shape or form or to distribute or allow others to without full and express permission from the asylum team project members.

2.All Copyrights and Intellectual properties remain fully with the original artists and programmers.

3.The Ozone Team asylum project will not be held reponsible for any changes to code or images done by any other party including that which the work has been done for.

4.No Graphic or code produced by the asylum team project can be used in whole or part in any commercial project that the person/s we undertake the work for, that will result in profit for said person, this excludes charitable sites where donations given to them will not be considerd a form of payment.

5.we will not be responsible for hosting the site we undertake or mainting its conection to the internet, but will recommend hosting companies etc that the site can be hosted on.

6.There will be a link on the site created pointing back to the ozone asylum, the person/s who we undertake the work for must not remove or allow to be removed this link.

ok any other ideas please give me some input, there's probably lots i have missed and have maybe not described properly here. if you want to get hold of me outside of the asylum

This is covered in point 2 (I believe) but we don't want to keep fielding questions about it along the lines of 'does this mean you get copyright control over my logo?'.

There is no way to stop someone from voting up a certain proposed project so I think you should get people to throw in their comments and rely on your judgement rather than just decide things on a straight vote.

Anyway looking good

And if I remember correctly WS has done part of the work on that site allready so the we will be of to a good start before we even begin

I would be interested to see if anyone else knows of anymore proposed projects (it would help give you an idea of how popular this will be).

On a side note I see Karl has proposed a commercial site:
http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/612/

It is my feeling that things could get much more complicated if commercial sites were allowed in the mix - I have started a FAQ and a thread here on the subject.

OK it looks like the Ripper Report is picking up some interest which is good What we need are some volunteers from the people who said they want to participate in this project, so if you want in please volunteer
