Drip...drip...drip...

It's been raining quite a bit lately and my ceiling started dripping tonight. About ten minutes later, a hand-size chunk of the plaster fell on the floor, about four feet from my new computer.

I didn't realize till I went up to the second floor that there's an area above my office that isn't covered by the second-floor apartment. And there appears to be quite a bit of wood rot.

I guess I need to get renter's insurance I can't afford. From my experience, management is just going to fix the problem superficially and not seriously fix the roof.

The fireplace flue can't be opened, they never fixed the damaged cabinets in my kitchen and now this. Somebody make me feel better about moving here.

I was in Austin once when it rained. It was nice and warm, but WOW DID IT RAIN! It wasnt normal "get everything wet rain". It was "giant movie rain". When it rains in Texas it goes wild, its like a freaking monsoon.

I don't know waht you'd call them over there in America, but here in Australia, we have the Ombudsmen, people who are there to handle complaints about specific thngs, like banks, Landlords, things like that. They take your complaint, then they invetigate it, and get you what you're due. Might want to try your equivilant of them.

Patrick: Well...no. We have lawyers here to, but these people are free, they're like landlord police.

Yeah, we have the whole Ombudsman thing here in Sweden bigtime, (I think it's originally a scandinavian word?) I had some problems with my landlord once in Minneapolis, and did a check through the blue governement directory pages, and sure enough, we had one working there too!

quote:
om·buds·man Pronunciation Key (mbdzmn, -bdz-, -bdz-)
n.
A man who investigates complaints and mediates fair settlements, especially between aggrieved parties such as consumers or students and an institution or organization.
A government official, especially in Scandinavian countries, who investigates citizens' complaints against the government or its functionaries.

If you can find one of these guys floating about somewhere in the beauracracy, it's worth giving them a call. The guy I hooked up with (he was the only one there) was bored out of his mind, nobody knew he existed. It also turneed up that he was an older guy who knew *everybody* who could get things done, years of government service, and he made thijngs happen for me, it was awesome!

On a more cynical note, it might also be worthwhile stopping off at a HomeDepot and picking up some plastic tarp material, you could drape it over your computer system when you're not using it, just in case. The rain will pass eventually, no?

Wes,
I'll give you the blue-collar side of things. If you have a flat roof, then you are probably dealing with silver-coat...which in Texas probably doesn't last very long with all the dry heat. I would urge your landlord to sheath your flat roof with either vinyl or rubber. Vinyl breathes much more tolerably with heat and cold (seams are welded for durability and modularity). If this is a pitched roof, you're probably dealing with a bad seal around a vent or stack. I see you mentioned wood rot too...Time to R and R with new wood and aluminum trim coil! Let them know how to do it the right way and you will never have this problem again! Words from the son of an exterior home improvement business owner.

Well, thankfully, the office was open today (don't remember checking there on Saturday before) and I went by to let them know what was going on. The woman in charge told me she would try to get their roofer out today to take a look, but if not, then Monday. (He will sometimes come out on weekends, but this being a holiday weekend...)

As soon as it's fixed, she'll get the interior guys to come in, cut the sheetrock out of the ceiling, replace it and respray it with that speckly crap. (What's that stuff for anyway?)

In the meantime, I'm moving everything into my bedroom, which is a pain because of my big-ass desk. Gonna need some help for that.

As long as they get it done before the end of the week, I'll be happy. Well, not happy, but not terribly angry. And this should also provide me the opportunity to paint the office blue like I've wanted for a while.

Ohmigosh, that's right, you're in Texas! How're you doing with all the rain there recently? I keep seeing scenes of homes washing away on CNN! Could you pass some of that wet stuff to San Diego? We just finished the driest year since records started being kept in 1850...

I got back from a week in Austin last weekend, and the single most memorable event was seeing a bunch of branches & twigs, 20feet up, balancing off the side of a bridge, presumably left there by the last 'shower'.

What a place!
