Nope. Java or JSP even is not going anywhere. Not right now at least, and I don't see it going anywhere in the next 5 years either. And 5 years is a long time.

The .net framework is getting ported to *nix and it was recently reported that a basic compilation was completed. So maybe there will be some more .net stuff happenning. But I can't see myself spending the time to learn it.

Java is just far more universal right now, .net can't compete with how long Java has been saturating the market.

I agree with the masses here. I doubt that the .NET framework will ever really compete with Java. The MS "version" has a really bad rap from a lot of the Java programmers that I know (not many really).

Like Ini said, the security issues are a big concern to a lot of them.

MS has always tried to compete with Java and those hardcore Java guys just want nothing to do with it. They can write cross platform apps with Java and MS wants to just cater to windows. Can't really blame them there. Linux is starting to really breath down the neck of Windows.

On a different note, I just downloaded Mandrake Linux last week and spent all afternoon trying to get it to install. Never could get it going. Error after error! Even had my fiancee's brother help out and he couldn't get it going. Kind of frustrating. I'll just go buy it, hell it's only $40!

hey, ini, i know you are a java-guy but:

".Net = MS = low security, lower performances."

is not true! .net has very high security guidelines and also the performance is good if you use win2k servers.

Glad to hear it! I've been doing java almost since it's inception back in 1995 (that doesn't mean I know everything though....) I don't really wanna learn a new m$ language anyway! Let alone save up the cash to buy the damn compiler! Java's got the software free the way it oughta be!

.NET is not a programming language, like java is.
IT in fact is a way to distribute data.

quote:
from MS:
Microsoft .NET is a set of Microsoft software technologies for connecting your world of information, people, systems, and devices. It enables an unprecedented level of software integration through the use of XML Web services: small, discrete, building-block applications that connect to each other?as well as to other, larger applications?via the Internet.

What does this mean? The parts from 1 program has not to be on the same computer or even the same network. So it's about communications between program parts. And the beauty of this all Some parts could be written in Java some in C++ and some in whatever odd language you use. This is in simplyfied words what is net about. MS however tries to push some of their own languages to the market. And since these are specially made for .NET they might be the best tools to write .NET app's.
