How about we come up with a list of photoshop/design related search terms and simply google bomb everything to hands-on. Its clear that the google bomb works at shifting the ratings in about a 2-3 month time frame. Mad Scientists went from what, the top of page #11 to being #3 on the first page? Its an amusing exploit of their current algorithm, maybe we can drive advertising with it...

moaiz: I like that plan - how about some others like seeing what we could do for the Asylum on terms like 'Photoshop discussion'. We now know we can do it and how long it takes for changes to take effect so we can only get better at this

After the redesign of the GN we will be trying to improve the GN's ratings for various keywords (tutorials, PHP, CSS, Photoshop) which should be interesting (we have put quite a bit of planning into making things work better for search engines) and I'm sure we'll be enlisting the powers of the Asylum for some help there

Skaarjj: Trigger is right - in fact it would help both sites. If a high ranking site for certain keywords were to link to your site with those keywords it would make your site more relevant. If two high ranking sites for the same keywords linked to each other it would just further consolidate their rankings. We would then be in an excellent position to promote any really good sites out there.

It is one of the weapons in the pornographers (and Scientologists) arsenal - groups of high ranking cross linking sites are a great way to consolidate your search engine rankings and promote other sites.

i suppose ill learn how to express them better when i grow up .......

we should try getting the links in a lot of message boards and blogs, because with that there will be several links at one place, just have it as part of a sig in a message board or blog.

im aware of that but the search engines aren't the same, if you type 1 thing in google, it may not be the same in yahoo, thats my point

I think the reason where google bombing is soley because gogles one of the most popular search engines out there

Trigger: Hate to do this again but I have just consulted my crystal ball (and yes I have to wear special trousers) and I feel that there is something you were also meaning to say: Yes Google is one of the most popular and it now feeds its results to a lot of other search engines so it is worth our while targetting that search engine but Google bombing has given some interesting insights into to the algorithim that they are using to calculate their results so we can use Google bombing techniques to boost rankings in Google. It seems likely that if you are doing something right in Google then it will probably mean you will do OK in other sites.

maninacan: You are right and links in sigs are very useful ways of get your site linked to from high ranking sites (like this one ) and blogrolling is a very good way to get a lot of links to your site - this counts for blogrolling-like links like a recommended sites box that is included on ever page of someone's web site (worth bearing in mind).

Trigger: Can we use that as the Asylum Bomb Squad's motto - change it to something like:

'hey, what we gonna bomb next?'

Right I would suggest two things (as discussed above):

1. We cross promote each others sites - I'll put some details in the FAQ where we can co-ordinate this. Lets get some buttons going to make things look pretty .

2. We really target specfic sites with useful keywords - like here and 'PhotoShop' and 'Discusssion'.

We know we can make an impact on rankings so now we can try a few things out for real

would having the links on the main page of sites with ceraint weburls with terms also be a good idea?

because my friend owns http://www.photoshop7.co.uk wich he dosent use i think he's got it for another year ... i could even get hold of it .. im sure he will let me use it ..

Trigger: If it is on the front page it can be deemed more relevant (which is why splash screens might hurt your search engine rankings) and clearly having a domain with Photoshop in the title could also be helpful (both depend on the vagueries of the various search engines). However, just having the page as a page of links to other sites is a trick long used by pornographers and other people who make their living trying to trick search engies and could cause one to get penalised. If you friend were to do something interesting with the page and the links happened to be dropped in then that would be OK but it is something we should be careful about (being amatuers we are trying some things that the pros have been doing for years and some of the things could actually harm search engine rankings).

I'm wondering now, my site right now is just one page which uses a bit of dhtml to show the different parts, would this harm my search engine rating because I don't have all the buttons linking to other pages on my site, instead I have buttons linking to javascript functions?

InSiDeR: Its ironic that it is you who asked that question Its not about quantity its about quality - high ranking in specific and relevant keywords might draw in a 'better class' of people (thats not to disrespect anyone here - some of the people here are about as good at what they do as you could hope to find anywhere - I'd just like to see more people arriving who give more than they take). It would also give the Asylum more 'stroke' in promoting other sites - if we link to good sites then some of the high ranking rubs off on them. And you become more attractive to the opposite sex (or the same one if thats what floats your boat).

maninacan: It depends - if you have all the content in DIVs and you are just changing their visibility/display then it shouldn't ruin things as the search engines read the code of the page so it will find all the content (it might not be able to link properly to the right page though which could confuse visitors). It might harm your rankings in other ways as it would tend to give you a very long page and searchn engines might not index it all and/or they might assign your content lower relevance as it is a long way down your page (more relevant material tends to occur towards the top of the page). All this would depend on the search engine though. The best way to get your content the best ranking is to have it in a fairly short 'static' page with the focus on one specific topic and plenty of keywords scattered throughout and in structural markup tags like headers, bold/strong, italics/emphasis, etc. and in the title. However, you shouldn't compromise your artistic vision to chase a higher ranking if it isn't important
