i woke up this morning and decided i wanted to test sites out on my computer so
i installed Microsoft Personal Webserver
then i realised i wanted perl on it so did a search and came across active perl downloaded the Zip file from there site
http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Downloads/ActivePerl/
to find there was no readme.txt or information on how to do the next step on there website

after doing all that i noticed that i already have a cgi-bin that has been setup with
htimage.exe and imagemap.exe inside of it

if anyone can help me out giving me instructions on how install activeperl on my personal webserver it would be greatly appreciated
and can anyone tell me what the 2 exe's are and what they do?

Thanks
Trig

Trigger:

Here is what I did. I have Active Perl on my machine as well. But I didn't go with MS Personal Webserver. Instead check out phpDev.

You can install Apache webserver, mySQL and PHP. You already have Perl so that takes care of that.

When you intall this, you get a folder with a www directory just like a webserver. You also get a folder to put Perl in. Install Active Perl in this folder. You will need to modify the .htaccess so that it will be able to run things like includes and stuff though.

I think that you will like phpDev a lot better. It comes with a Start and Stop DOS program and once it is started, it runs a test to make sure that everything is working properly.

Give it a shot, I think you will be more pleased.

Well, I don't have it on my machine. I would check some documentation but I am "guessing" that you can uninstall it safley through the control panel.

Good luck.

I am sure that you will love phpDEV. It's awesome!

my bet's is the
MS server's conflicting with the Apache

The only thing that I can think of that could be wrong is that you are not starting the Apache server and then starting the phpDev. It took me a couple of times to figure this out.

Look in the folder: C:\phpdev\www\phpdev4. There should be two *.bat files there "Apachestart" and "Apachestop" Then in the folder: C:\phpdev. There are two *.bat files. "phpdev_start" and "phpdev_stop".

Make sure that you Run the "Apachestart" file and then the "phpdev_start" file.

Sounds like the Apache server is not started and then you are trying to run PHPDEV.

I'll check back tomorrow and see if you got it.

Great! I'm glad it's working for you. Now you can get the manuals and learn some stuff about PHP. They can get a little confusing so I would suggest either the WROX book or just find some websites such as DevShed.
