I don´t know much about html and therefore I use Dreamweaver (the graphic editor).

Are there any similar prog like Dreamweaver out there?
It must have a layer-handling or something to that effect.

In the 'good old days' I used Netscape Composer and that´s a laugh, I know.

I have some problems with Dreamweaver, sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn´t.

And I can´t afford to buy my way out of the jam.
Therefore I would like to know if Dreamweaver is the only one.
The most important thing is that the prog can handle layers.

CPrompt gave me some help and I will try to sort out the good ones from the bad.

When I wrote (graphic editor) I meant, WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get"),
Maybe I´m blind but html-beauty isn´t a WYSIWYG to my knowledge.

Or save yourself some time and money and learn HTML. It will take you a total of 2 hours, much faster than what it took you to even wait for our replies. It might take you an additional 2 hours to understand the basics of CSS.

HTML and CSS are not that hard, the time would have been better spent actually learning it than trying to learn the DreamWeaver GUI, I know that DW confuses the hell out of me, I ended up just going into the code and doing it all by hand anyways.

Writing HTML is fine if your creating a very small page or site. If you plan on making a multi-page, multi-table multi-anything, a WYSIWYG editor is a big time saver. Dreamweaver creates good code for the most part. No WYSIWYG editor will be a subsitute for knowing HTML; but they(editors) are useful tools and there's no reason not to use them. So my advice is: learn HTML and contact Macromedia about your problem with Dreamweaver, they are a responsive company and may have a solution to your problem.

WYSIWYG editors like Dreamweaver have a source editing feature. They aren't just WYSIWYG editors. Macromedia Studio is like an IDE for web applications. I read somewhere that professionals tend to write their source in the source editor of Dreamweaver, and PREVIEW it using Dreamweaver.

Also, in business time is very important. So designing the layout in Dreamweaver is not such a bad thing. It's your choice if you want to waste time with Notepad. Dreamweaver also supports layers and handles them pretty well. I don't know what the original poster is asking or if he/she even knows his/her way around Dreamweaver...

Thanks for your time guys!

Now I know it´s called WYSIWYG and that´s what I´m looking for.
Like I wrote before, My Dreamweaver doesn´t work properly.

Therefore I want something else, but just as good as Dreamweaver.

I now have the info and will try to get it 'out there'

True, Dreamweaver is good for previewing. Not much else though! In most cases, the code can be quite sloppy and you have to redo it anyway. I use and love Macromedia's Homesite and HTML Beauty. They have all of the previewing capabilities and lots of extras.

I usually layout my pages in Photoshop, cut 'em up in ImageReady (gives nice and clean code) and then hand code the rest for fluidity and content. ramsay -- as for multiple pages -- taking the small amount of time it takes to write a PHP or ASP script takes care of the load. And after you've made a few templates, designing websites with it will be faster than even using a WYSIWYG editor. This process has allowed me to put up a full e-commerce site within one work day, without it having a templatey feel.

I say if you are using WYSIWYG's and are writing websites on a regular occasion (for profit), learn HTML, CSS, javascript, and a couple of dynamic scripting languages to fall back on. You are sure to need the knowledge at some point, and you will be wishing you had when you have to pass up a huge account. If you are a hobbyist, then by all means stick to a WYSIWYG editor and keep the internet chock full of unnecessary, unreliable, sloppy code (Dreamweaver not as bad as the others though).

I've used them for years, and I've sworn by them. Now in business, it's a whole different ballgame.

I learned HTML first... I believe the specification was HTML 2.01 at the time. Then I found Dreamweaver 3 and rejoiced. I think lionpaw is using a pirated version or he's a completely new to design software... because Dreamweaver 4 works fine.

I used to use dreamweaver exclusivly I loved it thought it was great. Then I got into things I could not make it do either because it didn't do them or I didn't know how to make it do them so I had to go into the code and do it. When you start to work in code and you try to use Dreamweeaver at the same time you realize how badly Dreamweaver can butcher the code making it impossible to tell what is goin on on the page. I always though it was cool that DW would could create javascript on the fly for rollovers and hideing and showing layers(Yes it does do layers). I also found it easier to do CSS by hand than DW interface. I now use MAX's HTML Beauty. DW is still installed I use it to FTP the files I do in HTML Beauty to my server. Too Lazy to just get a small FTP program installed I guess.

I downloaded MAX's HTML Beauty and it seems to be a very nice program.
But since I was already used to another text editor, I stuck with this one.
I use EditPlus, a nice text editor. I used to use Frontpage, just for the html writing, but since I started to use some advanced javascript (advanced for me, not for an expert), FP doesn't any longer is able to work properly. So, I do my pages with EditPlus.
I don't use layers, I don't even know how to use them. I use javascript (some code are third-party's, modified by me to meet my needs) and some php (which made me have to install Apache server, mySQL and php). To upload the files, I use FTP Voyager. To view my pages, I use mostly IE.
So, three basic programs are all I need: EditPlus, FTP Voyager and IE. Oops, and I use Photoshop. All my simple picture problems I solve using PS. I know I use only 15% (I guess) of Photoshop power, but this 15% is enough to make me love it. And finally, sometimes I get lost with my changes then I need a program to compare files, then I use Beyond Compare.

ADDED: "doesn't any longer is ..." Wow, I've got to go back to my English books... well, I'm no native English guy, so forgive my French
