Preserved Topic: Something like ketchup...

Due to food allergies I have been unable to eat ketchup for some time now. I miss it everytime I have fries, hambergers, and al ot of other foods. It is the tomatoe that I am allergic to.
So what I am asking is is somebody knows of something like ketchup but without the tomatoes in it?

I replaced ketchup once for a long while. I was just tired of how mundane it got. I realized during that time, that I prefer "hamburger sauce" on burgers. It's a sort of mixture of Thousand Island dressing, and a creamy mayo.

Sounds nasty, but damn, yo, it's good.

I think relish is probably a better alternative than mustard if you're going that traditional route. However the idea of tomatillo catsup or yellow tomatoes really works.

Surprising that a tomato allergy keeps you away from ketchup...considering that I doubt processed ketchup has ever even seen a real organic tomato.

A quickie google search lead to a news article that lead to a site about ketchup. Included on that site was a page with a tomatoless ketchup recipe so you can make your own. Hope that helps. Also, my mother in law is starting up her own little shop in her home. Its focus is to provide hard to find products for those looking for a gluten-free diet and those who's diet is limited due to allergies. You could try contacting her and she may have a few suggestions you could investigate.

Y'know something that's kinda like ketchup, but has no tomatoes in it is something called 'banana sauce'. It's red, contains bananas, vinegar, salt, etc. but IIRC does not contain tomatoes. It's from the Philippines, but I know you can get it in the U.S., if that's where you are. I could see trying it on a hamburger, since it's usually used on lumpia, sort of like a meat eggroll-y kinda thing. Do we have anyone who knows Philippine Cuisine here?



Odd behavior; even temperament...

Yeah, that "hamburger sauce" DG mentioned is infact the same stuff that's on McDonald's Big Macs. Thousand Island Dressing mixed with mayonaise. And yes, it's damn good.

I've gotta disagree with you though, pete. Relish sucks in comparison to mustard. Relish can be replaced by some zesty dill pickles, or even some jalepenos. You can't replace mustard. You simply can't.

Miracle Whip is a great alternative as well. Has a great tang and a creamy texture. Great with burgers, dogs, fries, etc.

Some good ideas here that I will have to check into next time I go shopping. Should kow by the end of the week on this stuff. The hamburger sauce has been tried before but I am allergic to thousands island dressing too. If this works out you all have just made my life a little happier!
