Apparently that beeping meant something. For it did it once more tonight. Twice, actually, about 45 minutes between each other.

And then the computer shut off. And it won't turn back on.

Wonderful. Dead machine. So I'll be incapable of just about everything except be on the net (using a backup... a trusty old 486! Woo...). But I'm not bitter... honest.

Going to take it to a place up in Port Orchard to give it a diagnostics. I'm thinking it's the power supply.

But anyways... sorry... had to bitch for a minute.

See ya round,

I heard Bill Gates commissioned a special team of designers and they developed nanomachines and those nanomachines are programmed to transmit themselves over the Internet and when they find a computer, they get into that computer and then they make the computer go crazy and make it shut down so that the person who owns the computer will have to buy a new computer and every computer sold now comes with its own nanomachines and those nanomachines take .001 cents from every online transaction you make and transfer it to Microsoft's assets so they can develop more nanomachines that will propogate themselves all over the Internet through e-mail. At least that's what I heard.

I've had one of my computer beep like that before.
The problem was either the power cable, or the monitor cable. When I'd turn the computer on, it would try to start up, start beeping, then shut itself off. I completely unplugged everything from the back, opened up the case (to see if anything was physically wrong), then hit the power switch on the back. Next, everything back in, made sure it was tightly in place, and when I turned it back on, it worked fine.

Make sure you check all the connections, try unplugging everything.

yeah, my computer beeped like that once too...

I just simply crushed two nanomachines with the butt of my rifle and the rest of them fell in line...

Thanks for the advice, Dan, I did just that: checked the connections, disconnected them all, plugged them into my wall instead of the strip... still won't turn itself on though.

tomeaglescz, yeah, just about everyone else I've talked to about this thing warned me that it might have been a cooling problem... it's a pretty old set, still processing (or was, rather) a K6-2 400Mhz, and I can't even remember the name of the MB. It's old. Real old. Probably time to upgrade anyways...

And I was kinda hoping it would have been something as simple as a dead mouse. They're easy to fix.

So I called this place and told them what happened, and he told me that if the computer itself wouldn't even turn on long enough to turn itself off again, then something pretty major happened, and I might as well be going ahead with a new computer. Fortunately, I'm hoping that my hard drive, video and sound cards, network card etc are still good, all I'd need is a new chipset and MB. Which shouldn't cost all that much.

Thanks all for the help. I just hope the nanomachines don't find their way into my rock (486)...

ya probably on the lucky side cpu overheats rarely do damage to any other components then themselves and the socket that they are sat in on the mobo, but to be safe ask ya store to check ya ram and hdd or better still put ya hdd into ya rock as another hdd but set it to slave and see if ya can read from it, or drop it into a friend pc, that will at least let ya know if the data is still intact.

I have got a list of what the most common sequence of beeps (bios warning) error messages are somewhere i will look them up

long continual beep is memory

short series of beeps normally video card

siren normally bios warning for hardware monitoring if ya board supports it (100% of the time means deep shit shut off now)

all theses are sub windows level error messages so if ya ever hear them power off asap.

with the non siren style stuff as i pointed out in njuices other thread its normally occuring just after upgrade or the pc got moved and a card or memory chip has gotten loose, just take all cards out and reseat them and normally all is ok. (invest in earthing strap) If ya not sure of something DONT CONTINUE to use it get it checked out asap.

NJuice good luck again and hope to hear some good news from ya

If it was the CPU, remove the HDD and put it into another computer. You have nothing to bitch about.

I accidentally re-partitioned my drive. I lost all my source image files, 100GB of full mp3 albums... ... That was a time to cry. It happened just a few days ago. Now I have to rebuild my collection. Most of them were my CDs but hell, a lot of them weren't. And they were good albums too! I also lost the registration details to my domain name, and a lot of important documents. My firm's business plan... I've been rewriting that.

If your HDD is shot too, take it to a place where they can restore the data. But I bet it was your CPU that died. What was the CPU? I have a Dual AMD Athlon 2 GHZ.

If it wasn't the CPU, then it was the motherboard's battery. And when the mobo's battery goes out, so does your CPU and most likely your HDD. In that case, cry. Have fun!

If you decide to buy another computer, don't build it custom. Just go to: http://www.alienware.com/ and shell out the cash. It'll be the best purchase you've ever made.

ramsay i dunno where ya got the wierd idea about the battery..

The Battery (cmos battery) on the Mobo just supports the bios (hardware) and keeps system time etc, worst case scenario is ya have to keep restting the bios details untill ya get a new one.

No way will a cmos battery do anything to hdd or cpu.

Hmm and a repartitoned a 100GB Drive by accident what model?

Alright... a little update (I know, I've been away for a while... heh)...

Took the puter in, had the guys take a good long look at it. I didn't even bother to pull the HD out and hook it up into the rock, as I really just wanted a checklist of all the things I'm now without.

So they took a look at it, and smiled at me with an overbearing sense of pity when I returned. Simply from their faces, I could tell this was going to hurt...

It turns out that my processor went bye-bye. In fact, as he said it, it should have gone bye bye a long time ago, but for one reason or another, it didn't... and continued to work... until that moment. I asked about the siren, and he said that was caused because of my power supply... and it sending out power spikes...

...luckily, i turned it off before any serious damage could be done to the hard drive, and it's still operational... at least long enough to move everything off of it and into a new drive. Which I'll have to be doing soon anyways... it's an old drive, makes weird noises. Or did, rather.

So! New processor. The well needed kick in the ass I've needed for forever and a half to finally just go ahead and upgrade the computer, along with a new box, mobo, ram, and hard drive. Luckily, and I'm sooo happy for this one thing: my precious GeForce 2 Ti is just fine and dandy... small favors.

Anyways, there you all have it. Thanks everyone for the help, I'll be up and putting out crappy photoshop pictures in no time.

Til then! I'm rockin' it out on a classic, CHERRY, 486! *pops a beer... no wait, I'm not 21... soda... yeah, soda...*

Kinda starting to sound a bit like my computer... Died a long time ago, it just doesn't know it yet... Unfortunately if this one wakes up in the next year or so and realizes it should be converted into a large paperweight, I won't have an extra $1000 to drop into a new computer

Well, I was just relaying what I've been told... whether it holds merit or not is another question...

Yeah, I guess it could be constrewed as crap, but then, I'm thinking he was just exaggurating (sp?) to get me to walk out of there with a few hundred dollars in merchandise under my arms. Which I would have loved to, but I'm poor. It'll have to wait a few weeks... unfortunately...
