Preserved Topic: I have a headache (Page 1 of 1)

Who and I mean who ever invented this color scheme?! Just a wonderful site, great people, lots to learn, but sorry, this really hurts my eyes and head. I'm really serious about this. If it wasn't for these pain causing beams of orange on brown I would propably stay here for a long while. Any plans of changing this scheme and if not I know enough. Of course i don't expect you to change it for just one single person

So it gives you a head ache? Thats a good sign, after a few days you will lose your sanity and will be forced to your own cell, why do you think this place is called the asylum?

I just wonder how people would react if the pages in new Photoshop 7 Bible would have this color scheme. But hey, I'm just dumb, orange on brown is really great and it's sad that others didn't figure that out earlier.

I'm guessing there is something in your monitor settings that make this look weird, because to anybody who knows much about color schemes this is a pretty good one, one that wouldn't cause headaches. So I'm thinking your monitor is a bit screwy, or maybe you are, but that's ok we're all a bit loopy around here.

Yes...well I have a headache and am feeling quite sick becuase one of the students in a calss I was just running let off a couple of stink bombs. One was sulfur based and the other methane based. I had to work in that for 20 mins, all the while praying that enough methane would not hit the high-power multimedia projector I was using and ignite. Goddamn that was stong.

anyway.......yes, this color scheme works quite well, and no, I don;t suppose it'll be changing simply becuase you disagree.

Since, of course, there is obviously some sort of problem with your visual receptors if these colors hurt you in any way.

I like the color scheme of Asylum, and I have even copied it to my site (a slight variation ) but I understand that it's not a usual scheme and that many people would not like it as the neurotics, lunatics, psichotics and mad people here like it.
I would give options and that's what I did in my site. In my site, the visitor can choose between five preset background colors. I bet there is always one he/she will like.

I'd like to point out that reading text on a printed page and reading text on a computer monitor are two very different things. You're right--orange text on a brown page would be difficult to read in print, but we're talking about a very different medium here. As for causing headaches, black text on a white background would be far more likely to cause a headache than a light text on a dark background.

I hadn't seen this color scheme before I came to the Asylum, and when I first got here I thought it was kind of funky (I'm not even sure what that means). But never once did I find it uncomfortable. Now, I think I've grown quite fond of it. You might want to mess around with your monitor (like maninacan suggested) and see what happens.

Many might recall an old system they once had with an amber monochrome screen. Very easy on the eyes.

Now that we've brought it up, I really don't know how black text on a white background became the standard for most Web sites. I guess it's the fault of Windows. Reading on a white background for long periods of time make my eyes tired. It's like staring at a white light. In fact, it's very much like staring at a white light. (Come to think of it, I steered away from Windows 3.1 for so long, even though my Dad had it, because going from dark-background DOS programs to the white Windows backgrounds hurt my eyes.)

That's why I changed the editing background in Homesite from white to light gray, since I look at it for long periods of time. (Darker would be better, but it would be too hard to go through and change the entire color-coding scheme.)

Is it just me or is JellyBean contradicting him/herself?

First the color are terrible and then they are great. . . ???? !!!! ???? Don't know.

Anyway, I have headache too. My sinus' are KILLING me!

CPrompt: You're referring to this statement, right? Yeah, that threw me at first, too, but then I figured it out--I think Jellybean was being sarcastic.

Although, if you ask me, complaining about the color scheme is a really odd choice for one's first post. To each his own, I suppose. We'll still love you in the morning, Jellybean.

It's funny to think of all the .PDF files I read in monitor with a black background and orange letters.
The black letters on white background is NOT that bad, you just have to adjust the brightness accordingly. People tend to set the brightness too high and then, certainly, it is not good to read black over white.

What's with all this about colours?

If it gives you a headache then you need more pills and also your are new so the pills take some time to kick in and change the way you see. After a while tho you will be fully comfy with the orange on brown effect.

If a change is in order, then I think we should change it to pink on white or bright green on black.... aww 1996, hehe!!!

Not at all.
For me it is orange over almost black. My monitor is adjusted with a low brightness (50 out of 100) and I can't see any brown here.
Let me see, let me increase brightness....

Now back to my default, I'd rather see it almost black.
My monitor is adjusted so that a black screen is indeed a black screen, even under low light conditions. I don't like when black looks like dark 'iluminated' grey.
So Jellybean (are you still reading all these posts?), use your brightness and contrast buttons (the ones in front of you, in your monitor), they can do magic.

Thanx Wes and you too DL.... for a while there I was beginning to feel very very old <lol> That 'amber' goes nicely with the maxell eight inch floppy disk I still have... whenever I think about complaining that my system's too slow or old... I just look at that 8 inch floppy and I immediately feel better. <bg>

If the color scheme really bothers you that much you could just take a magnet to your monitor.

Eh. It's light on dark. Whether you see dark red or black depends on your monitor's gamma. If it's very difficult on your eyes, then I'm willing to bet it's a monitor problem (I've seen monitors where this site is virtually invisible), which may be worsened by bad lighting around the computer. With a high gamma and a glare (especially if sunlight is directly hitting the monitor), this site can be virtually unreadable. Personally, I find that it works great on my laptop's LCD screen (gamma of 1, I believe, so there's no color distortion, except that things tend to turn out lighter to me than their creator viewed them when they made them on a regular monitor).

In any case, I think it's as good as black on white, which works fine also =)

If you find it's a problem on other sites too, you may consider setting your browser to override foreground and background colors.

Disclaimer: For those that don't know what a magnet will do to a monitor, I wouldn't suggest finding out by experimentation. Make sure you have a spare monitor though, if you really really must.
