Ya know how ya need a crossover cable if you have two network cards + no hub to join two computers up. Do you think it would be possible to use the TCP IP protocol over between two computers with two modems using a crossed-over phone cable ? It would be more fr the fun to see if it works than to solve a problem or anything.

Also would it be faster than a null modem serial cable ? (I dont have one btw, thats why I want to use the modems).

Umm... I don't think so. That would be like hooking up two phones to one another to talk though. It just doesn't really work like that.

Serial null modem cable... wow, those things still exist?... Seriously, second hand NIC's are dirt cheap (I see boxes of em for $1 a card at the swap meets all the time) and if you can rig up the cat5 cable yourself ya all set. You could also look into USB networking. Works quite well for small peer to peer home networks.

mmh, USB networking ? I've never heard of that. But Only one of the computers has a USB port anyway. Yea, connecting two phones together doesnt work, but if you connect up a 9v Battery and a 33Ohm resister I heard that can get them to work.

If you're determined enough, you can make just about anything work, but why?

Yes, you'll need to power them. Most phones are powerd by the phone line itself so I'd assume some parts of the modem would at the same. At least it would expect to get a powerd signal of some kind. I don't really know jack about how phone lines work though so I'd have no idea how you figure out what number to dial or how you'd go about writing software to trik the computer into thinking it's already dialed and connected.

Only one PC has a USB port? You sure? Most do, even the old pentium boards did but the old AT cases never had USB ports built in. Chances are there's USB connectors on the mainboard. I've never hooked up one of these myself but I've seen a lot of them and often wondered why they were never used. Maybe because USB devices weren't all that popular back then. That and USB support wasn't native in windows till 95 OSR 2.

Drac: Yea, they usually do , an old computer I have has the pins on the board to hook up a port, but the pc in question has only a place for the pins like they where all picked out or something.

You wouldnt need trickery software, one of the computers has win2k, I could set it like an ISP , the phone number would be nothing or 0 or something.

....

This weird idea came to me when I was making a crossover cable out of a direct link RJ-45, but I can't get the two talking at all, I have the same problem as before it was a crossover, there must be a break in the line or something.
Its win2k to win98, does anyone know of anything that I might be overlooking, problems other people have had in the past.
