The following is a little something I experienced last night...

*Light Profanity Warning*

We (some friends and I)went down to a local celebration to see a band we enjoyed by the name of Civilized Animal (I highly suggest if you enjoy funk/reggae/hiphop/jam type stuff). Naturally we began to make our way to the fron tof the crown right against the stage when the brother of one of our friends shows up and joins our group with a few friends of his own. Upon reaching the 2nd row the harder music began and the crowd began to jump... and jump... and together with the brother and his friends we began to bump and mosh kidn of like you do with a bunch of guys at a high energy concert.

Well soon after a very large girl was bumped and she proceeded to turn and begin to yell at us. At this time we informed her that "If you dont want to be bumped, bitch, stay out of the front." which led to a little more yelling and the calming down of her so that we could go back to our ruckas. Soon after she was bumped again by a guy in our party (The brothers' friend, Rick) and she came out swinging. In the fray Rick had an expensive shirt (95USD) torn and began to knuckle up with this girl.

Jumping between them (i love playing concert security ie pulling kids out of the pit, breaking up fights, all that good stuff) I almost take a punch to the face from this bohemoth of a girl. At that moment I had to make a choice, let Rick (i dont really know the guy) go to demolish this girl, or keep him off.

I kept Rick off from fighting this girl, and we all went off and had a marry old time.

Here is my question, is it legal for a guy to hit a girl?

It's really not legal for anybody to hit anybody.

And it is just stupid to wear an expensive shirt - if the gig is any good you should expect to end up soaked in sweat - your own and other people's (its good to share) and if it is really good - urine, vomit, blood, cider, mud, etc. if you get to leave with your shirt on at the end of the night

It would normally been a pretty peaceful show.

"Its no legal to hit anyone" and if we lived in an ideal world that would be, but we dont and we wont. So in your opinion, how do you personally address of the issue of a male hitting a female. You answer can incluse special circumstances of course.

I address the issue with a flat-out no, just as before. IMO, no matter what the circumstances are, it is never ok for a guy to hit a girl, period.

Then again what do I know, I'm only 19

I would, in self-defence, use any reasonable force to defend myself, my friends or my family (and I have done).

If you want to create a hypothetical situation whereby I had to hit a woman to stop her attacking my (hypothetical) children then I would do it wihtout stopping to think.

In that kind of concert situation you describe you apologise, possibly saying something about not ruining everyone's night out and get on with having fun.

Good case in point insider - wearing expensive clothes to concerts is something boneheads do. ~jots down in notebook~

It no more or less legal for a male to hit a female than for any other gender combination.

The situations in which it might happen can vary greatly, so you can't say flat out that it is or isn't ok for a male to hit a female (I know a few girls that I would run away from were it to come to swinging...).

The fact that this guy did it over a fucking shirt that he should have had the brains not to wear into a mosh pit says very blatantly that he is a douche-bag and should be beaten with large metal objects.

Just wanted to point out that you asked if it was legal, not if it was right, and krets answered that question. What does being legal have to do with living in an ideal world? It's not legal to murder, but people still do it. I think everyone would agree that we do not live in an ideal world, but this does not make murder any more legal. And judging by the way you worded those two questions (the original and the above "clarification") I would say you're confusing law with morality.

OK, now, as for my opinion: I was taught not to hit girls when I was young. In high school I studied martial arts, which presented me with quite a dilemma when my sparring partner was a girl. At first I just stood there and got pounded, until one particularly vicious girl landed a shot on the family jewels. After I recovered, I basically beat the crap out of her. Was it the right thing to do? Probably not. I acted out of pain and anger. But it did help me readjust my thinking. I would have no problem hitting a girl if I was defending myself or my loved ones. That being said, in all the years since then, I have not once had to use violence to defend myself, and I've been in a few sticky situations. Violence is a last resort, to be used only when all else has failed.

Now, I know you were asking a semi-hypothetical question, but you did give the example of the concert. I do not think violence was warranted in that situation. Was the girl right? No. Was Rick right? Again, no. What would I have done in that situation? I would have moved away from the cow to a different area. End of problem.

[Edit: I see DL snuck a post in there while I was being a windbag. One of these days I'm going to compile a book: "The Collected Wisdom of DL-44." I see it topping the bestseller list. ]

I pretty much agree w/ most of what Emps and DL say. However - and I am not the fighting type - I have been around situations where some girls have more or less taken a manly stance on fighting... more so than any other male in the "bar". I have seen "men" get there noses demolished by Amazonian women (I play in a band and have been in some pretty shady bars). Being raised with four sisters myself, I have seen what some girls can do, and at times it is amazing. I have SEEN my sister pummel a harasser until his friends had to drag him away for his safety. My sister is NOT EVEN Amazonian!

A very touchy subject though! A more frightening scenario comes about when a group of males SEE a guy hit a girl...I've seen it! The guy did not leave on his own two feet! This is very exciting to watch, but not fun to be a part of! I am only speculating here...

I would say if a girl has the physical capacity to render you unconscious, by all means defend yourself. But if this girl has not really "hurt" you, just humiliated you, save yourself from eating twenty other different fists and keep your hands off...walk away!

[edit] Oh yeah, and the shirt! VERY BONEHEADED INDEED! I went to a Megadeath/COC concert about 6 years ago and my shirt was drenched with whatever toxic substance had been concocted on THE FLOOR! My cost: $6.99 for a pack of 5.

Though I tend to agree with Master Suho (I, too, have studied Martial Arts...Aikido)...in violent situations, where either a) all other attempts to disfuse the situation have failed or b) someone attacks me without reason - in these situations, the enemy is the enemy...and gender has nothing to do with it. However, I still attempt to just use a level of violence to end the situation...apply that which is necessary...and Aikido is great for this type of fighting...

In all of my 'bouncing' days, I've only had to actually use violence a few times...

On the reservation, it was a daily occurance. And yes, I've seen packs of girls beat the living **** out of a guy...but I've never witnessed a one-on-one...mostly on the reservation...

So, one does have the right to defend oneself...of this, I am a stout believer. One does not have the right to instigate such, though. And most laws follow this line of reasoning.

I was raised not to hit girls, and like Suho I got into martial arts where a chick whipped my white..... after I could see, we went at it again, and I whipped her. In the situation you gave, it wasn't worth the fight. I've seen a girl hit a guy, then he turned around and just 'shoved' her, one scream got her saved from the bully by 10 or so guys....
It was pathetic, the dude got pounded while I sat laughing my butt off...

fun times

Suho - You are exactly right, I was mixing laws with morality. By "legal" I meant "is it alright with you". I should have worded that better. As far as my example I did diffuse the situation, so no punches were actually landed.

Insider - It wasnt a big concert so we werent expecting a mosh pit, we were wearing decent clothes and I think that Rick was in the wrong for jumping in the pit with the shirt on.

Thumper - Yeah it is a real touchy subject and I havent seen it addressed here. I brought it up because i believe that "it is not okay to hit a girl, but I can make her stop hitting me".

JKMabry - Not a chance.

AT and others - This summer I was camping after a concert (at "The Gorge" if anyone knows... no? alright) and I had been wrestling with one of my female friends. Suddenly I hear "HES BEATING THAT CHICK UP!" from the next campsite. I look up and there are about 7 or 8 guys there ready to take me out. It took her assurance and alot of the beer in our cooler to get me out of that one.

*OFF TOPIC*
Tonight I went to see Incubus, and it was one of the best shows I have been to. Im not much of an Incubus, but they are damn good live. If you have the chance I suggest that you go. I would pay $30 again. I didnt wear any clothes that I would mind being mangled if anyone is asking. Emperor you would be proud, I came out of that concert (i made my way all the way to the rail) drenched in sweat, mine and others, as well as my own blood (crowd surfing kid came down on my head... ouch!)

Well, I am sort of a rough and tumble tomboy and have always went by this law.... 'If someone hits you first with intent, then you have every right to wail on that person's a$$.' That has worked for me so far. I have had to use violence a couple of times when I was a few years younger, mainly because I was picked on in school.. but I think that rule does apply.

If someone accidentally hits me (however that may be, maybe they bumped into me or something) I'll brush it off.

If someone carelessly swings at me (flailing about like a freakin' retard, for example) I'll exchange some harsh words with the fool.

If someone intentionally swings at me, or if I see someone intentionally swing at a family member (or even if they just talk bad about my mother), and if I see someone assault someone else (and I'm able to determine who the aggressor is), I will proceed to wail with a relentless fury, leaving the aforementioned in a fetus-curled state of severe regret and physical anguish.

And he better not come at me with a melee weapon. My "play" (some term, nothing playful about it!) at the longsword ain't so bad.

It could always be more fantastic...

Pfft, of course someone would have said something about my comment...

Geeeeeeezzzz.... I went to ozzfest with the same shirt for 2 days, came back and it was sweaty and a lil muddy, no holes cause I stayed away from the pit... It's just a shirt, pants are another thing, I won't wear certain pants to a concert (mainly ozzfest or any other outdoor even) unless I feel they are worth the chance of fraying or even [insert god here] forbid holes .

Now on the other hand... Went to a TOOL concert in louisville in october of last year on a thursday night, didnt get home till 3:00 AM. Anyway, went in some nice jeans, ($40, pretty descent wide legs), a tool shirt (white w/ an eye on the back). Those jeans held up, but some asshole thought it would be funny if they filled a jug of water up and just poor it over (stadium seating, we were underneath). Yea all over me and my cousin.... That shirt got muddy and bloody... Mud at an indoor concert u ask? Rained outside... My shirt you ask? Fell down running up a hill which had been rained on and the grass was smooth, damn that sucked ass. Still a great concert, and I wore the shirt to school the next day! I still wear that shirt on weekends...

A shirt is a shirt, who gives a f***?
